So many intangibles involved in 'the biggest club' argument.
If we agree that sport is all about winning then you have to look to which clubs are doing that at the moment.
I would say that today, at this moment to the two best teams around would be city and chelsea.
Hand on heart over the last few years these two have been the best in england.
Wether you equate that to the 'biggest' club is up to you.
You can argue about fans.
But city i would say are just as big, if not bigger, than utd in manchester.
And anyway if you want to go to thailand then you could argue liv have more fans than city.
But no way on earth are they a better team at the moment than city.
City have a much better squad, better players, they have a much bigger wage bill, they win more.. Bigger turnover i believe.
Man U have dropped the ball since Fergus left.
They may indeed get back to the top in the near future.

Fully agree rommel regarding the pressurising of refs by Fergie. Pointing to his watch, the so called mind games with opponents and officials all added to it but that is all part and parcel of the game isn't it?

The likes of Gerrard, Terry and Robson used to get away with murder on the pitch because they were England captains.

Don't forget that Fergie was hauled up before the FA and got touchline bans half a dozen times or more plus loads of fines so its not as if he could do what he wanted.....all the time

The reason I think city are the biggest club..
First up, you have to decide what makes the biggest club?
Is it money, is it fans, is it history, trophies, or the team?
Maybe a combination...
if we're talking money then that money has to be used to dominate on the field.
Somebody posted that the wage bills of city, Chelsea and Utd are all around the 200£m mark. The biggest in the league. That's the starting point.
No doubt many would claim Man U have most fans.
But what constitutes a fan?
Someone who sits down in front of the box and wants a particular team to win?
Let's face facts.
The team that wins will be the best supported club.
I grew up in London in the 70s, there was one Man U fan in my school and he switched to Southampton when Kevin Keegan came back from Germany.
I would imagine that situation has changed drastically since then.
Of course liv were the biggest club when I was a kid.
As lfc fans never tire of reminding us, they have tons of history.
But the notion they are bigger than city is fanciful.
City bought livs best player, sterling 2 seasons back.
If you are selling your players to your rivals you can not be the biggest club.
Utd have the biggest stadium
But how much of that is down to the fact that old Trafford was allowed to expand owing to its location on brownfield sites whereas other clubs have struggled for planning permission in residential areas?
Are we really to accept that a supposed world wide fan base, as fickle as fans can be, is the basis for football domination?
We have seen with Man U they have experienced periods of success when driven by men like busby and fergus. not been a lot has there outside of those two gentlemen?
Real Madrid and Bayern dominate whomever the head coach may be..
All the millions and fans in Ireland and Scandinavia can get Utd a seat at the table but it's what goes out on the field that counts.
Of course it's quite possible that Jose will get Utd back at the top seat on the high table.

Maybe next, but given the history do you really believe he can hang around longer than  the 3 he gets at Chelsea, Madrid or wherever?

I think the business model at those two is superior at the mo.
Of the two I prefer city.
City want to win by playing football.
They want to win the ucl dominating possession, like Madrid, barca and Bayern.

Find it hard to believe people would believe Man C are the biggest club in English football ,they dont even own their ground for starters ,yes they are  on paper right now mega rich , they,ve had that for long enough imo to dominate our League  , they also have the honor recently of letting their last Manager know he,s out the door months before the seasons over and is gonna be replaced by the so called prima donna,s of Managers in Pep  G , ruthless without doubt and shows little class on their part imo .
Biggest club title imo is all about history ,longevity ,honors etc,  City over the next 20 yrs might well dominate the Prem  but they,d still be behind the like of Liverpool and Utd  ,esp Liverpool who were Kings of Europe when everything was on more of a level playing field and when players were loyal , home grown etc .
Imo the games gone  berserk , to much money  , to many foreign players and many mercenaries amongst them . So for me its always the big 2 first and I have Liverpool with Utd and Arsenal as the top 3 , money can buy some success but cant buy the history behind the club

Liv had one period in their 120+ years of domination
from about 1975 to 1990
with a brief period in between when forest were in charge.
Ok they won tons of trophies in that era but the game was on its erse at the time.
They were one of the few clubs in the english first division to stick to their boot room principles while everyone else was playing long ball football as advised by charles hughes and his damnable fa handbook.
All those european cups should come with an asterisk in my opinion because english clubs were allowed to select from 5 home unions, england both irelands, scotland and wales, while everyone else had a maximum of 2 overseas players. Most none at all.
Ok, it was a big achievement. But the dice were loaded in their favour.
I remember waking up one december morning and seeing the lauded liverpool of the 80s getting taken to the cleaners in the world club championship by Zico and his flamengo side which formed the backbone of the wonderful brazilians of the 82 world cup.
Sort of like the barcelona of their day.
Liv were good  but far from the best we have ever seen.
I can not have Liv as the biggest club based on one period of histoy. Little more than a decade where competition at home was pretty thin on the ground.

Their record in Europe was superb over a nearer 30 yr and that dice wasn,t loaded for all of that time , no one can forget the last win when massive underdogs and getting a spanking by half time etc ,  that comeback came from the  heart of a proud club with real history and long term home grown players pushing those that joined a great club , a proper never say die attitude that cant be paid for with money imho .

Homegrown players and history didnt win them the european cup.
Bringing on didi hamann and pushing gerrard out wide left -his best position tho he would never admit it - was the reason.
I am sorry but in the 70s the italians and spaniards decided to stop recruiting foreigners to their leagues so the national teams could improve.
English clubs, with their ability to plunder the abundant scottish market had a huge tactical advantage.
Scotland were a european power at the time and arguably among the top 10 teams in international football.
Germany was not unified and france didnt really hit their stride until the great team of the late 90s and noughties.
Imo far too much guff is talked about the liv teams of the 70s/80s.
Probably because the england team have been so bad that journalists have projected their nationalism onto the success of english clubs in europe.
Simple fact is liv were a team of their time.
Not a particularly great age in the nations football history. Not as competitive as now and certainly not as good as the 60s.
Success in english football is always transitory.
This isnt spain where real and barca always win. Italy and juve. Germany and Bayern.
We just have far too many big clubs for that to be the case.
IMO liv  are living in the past if they think past successes will translate to future glories.
