You should hang your heads in shame with the news that Merton Council will approve the creation of a new stadium at Plough Lane at the cost of kicking out the greyhound and speedway stadium that has a longer and deeper entwined history in the borough. The premise that Wimbledon wanted to return home after the creation of MK Dons is shallow when the result kicks out two fellow sports with just as much right to stay. The greyhound track shares the facilities with the speedway, why the three could not be combined is beyond me. A view slightly further away from the pitch is a price that should have been paid.  I am glad there is space in London for another football stadium but now you have killed Wimbledon, London has no greyhound stadiums.

Wimbledon's first win of the season.

The support for the sport has died though, I've been there when there were only about 700 odd people, Wimbledon will get thousands, especially when they get back to the big time. Final decision is not even made although as good as.

The dwindling numbers at the stadiums and TV viewers has made it an easy target for property developers to have planning applications approved.

Will end up bringing more money to the area.

Greyhound racing is on its last leg, as more and more people learn that the industry uses dogs as mere moneymaking machines, bred for speed at the expense of their health, strength, and stamina.

Many greyhound puppies are killed in the name of “selective breeding” and never make it to the racetrack, and dogs who do qualify to become racers are typically caged and muzzled by their trainers and suffer from crate and muzzle sores as well as infestations of internal and external parasites. Once their racing days are over, many dogs are discarded. The ears of some are cut off to remove identifying tattoos, and the dogs are then abandoned or killed.

Hippie the industry is highly regulated with the overwhelming majority of owners and trainers responsible people who act in a responsible way. There are horrible coonts in every aspect of life who will display despicable behaviour, Animal Rescue establishments are full of examples, so the argument put forward that Greyhound Racing is a cruel sport does provide the accurate reflection of how greyhound people behave. Further what about the speedway, what have they done wrong. The shame for the supporters comes from the fact their ground was sold from beneath them by selfish barstewarders yet they are acting in exactly the same way.

When I say final decision I meant final approval which Merton will decide on 15th September though it will be given.

Sadiq Khan is a Labour Mayor.

The council leader at Merton, Stephen Alambritis, is a Labour politician who has pushed hard for this.

I think 2 + 2 = 4.

As and AFC and a greyhound fan I am most certainly not hanging my head in shame.
Firstly,  AFC have started from scratch after the FA stole the club and handed it to Pete Winkelman up in MK. True fans such as Ivor Heller have built this club from scratch on Wimbledon Common and the climb up the various leagues has been nothing short of extraordinary in such a short space of time. We desperately need a bigger stadium in order to be able to increase our budget and compete at our current level and above.
Various searches for available land have proved fruitless and the greyhound track seems the only viable alternative. That is merely yards from where our old ground stood seems like it was always written in the stars.
Secondly I have been a visitor to the dog track since the early 80s when my father, a greyhound owner at the time, used to take me and it holds some great memories for me. Back then it was a thriving business with packed stands and plenty of bookies taking bets. Gradually over the past 15-20 years the stadium has been run down to a shadow of its former self. One whole side of the stadium is now closed and the other side needed a major overhaul years ago.
Major investment was needed and none came. It seems Paschal Taggart was hoping to get the land on the cheap, banking on the council refusing permission for a football ground, and now it’s too late to save the stadium.
It is upsetting that greyhound racing will be lost in London, but you can’t blame AFC for this or any of the other 25 dog tracks in London that have closed down over the past 25 years or so.

It's not so much AFC Wimbledon but the fact that the track is the last one left in London. But I don't suppose the average Londoner cares too much about that. It's a very sad state of affairs for greyhound racing fans who have lost more than 30 tracks in London over the years.

Well said Jim26.  Greyhound racing is a dying sport, its not AFC's fault that greyhound racing is dying.  Property prices in London are sky high, anyone in their right mind would sell to a developer if they had the chance to sell a greyhound stadium.
Report safari guide August 24, 2016 1:42 AM BST
Jim, the track was sold by the GRA to a consortium of property developers some years back who have led a campaign of underinvestment driving the track into the ground to make their future intentions easier. Many people do not like going to a sh1thole for a night out so attendances have declined but it is still the home of the Derby and any future planning had to include the sporting venue. You say various searches for land was fruitless so have come to the conclusion that it is OK to kick the greyhounds and speedway tracks out to make way for your priority. You say you have no shame in that action, what about all the people involved in those lost ventures, their livelihoods, the supporters of both sports, their losses, it was a selfish act to get into bed with the developers to swap the sporting venue requirement with your enjoyment somehow absolving you of all guilt. It doesn't.

Lambers1 - Greyhound racing is in decline but it is still alive, people are still paying tens of thousands of pounds for greyhounds, the Derby has a prize fund of £250,000, tracks are still busy on Fridays and the weekend, the sport is a large part of the bookmaking industry and will continue for years to come. Property prices are irrelevant with regards to Wimbledon as the Planning required a sporting venture to remain. It should have been a rebuilt Greyhound Stadium.

Bit sad really if no more Greyhound tracks in London.  I spent a summer in the mid 90's attending at least one of the London tracks most days.  Even then there were often few people about during the day but still enjoyable.

Reading how greyhounds are treated all I can say especially to hippie............total utter bull****. I worked in the in the racing game as a head lad back in the nineties. Even back then we had dogs costing 40k. Do you or anyone actually believe dogs of that value would be abused ? As for AFC Wimbledon fans/club have nothing to do with the demise of greyhound racing. If anyone is looking for someone to blame look no further than the bookies. The trackside bookies who could take thousands out of the track on a regular basis but rarely put nothing back into the sport other than maybe out of guilt (doubt it) might sponsor the odd race. Oh I hear you say they must of had overheads ! They certainly did, it cost them EIGHT times the entrance fee for their pitch Crazy Back then to have a fairly decent dog A3A2 level you'd probably have to fork out up to five grand plus your kennel fees which at the time was about £35 a week also with racing now shown in the bookmakers why go to a dog track when you can watch for free Sad

Can a all the Greyhound goers not set something up in London to get a track up and running

A nice new one all round seater and you can fire away with the speedway also

Surely all fans/trainers/drivers etc can get something sorted of the council

You need to do things about it as on here no one will take notice Wimbledon dog track closed as most under 30 probably ave never backed a dog.
Report safari guide March 27, 2017 11:57 AM BST
London land prices are too expensive Chaser. The difference with Wimbledon as opposed to Walthamstow and Catford was the development had to include a sporting venue and for some explicit reason they choose football over the existing Greyhound stadium. The GRA are owned by the developers and they have under-invested in the greyhound stadium for years turning the place into a sh!thole but it has still been popular despite their misdoings. A smart state of the art stadium with restaurant facilities would be rammo every weekend, a place to take your bird, a place for pals to have a laugh, I still cant believe they have let the last Greyhound stadium in London go.

I bet on the greyhounds a good 11 hours per day, its my main sport for £££ and couldnt care less where the tracks are.

Im very much in the camp that if there really was all of this support for any of the tracks that were in London theyd still be there.  Lots of football clubs around the country have had to move out of town to carry on, same as a lot of retailers, cinemas, sports centers and I guess any venture that needs a lot of real estate to run.  If there was more than emotional support for greyhound racing in London theres enough big money around to be tapping into it, humans in general like money afterall.
