If the game is tied after 90 minutes it goes straight to penalties with the winning team getting a bonus point!

The SPFL has announced an exciting new format for the Scottish League Cup, including competitive group football in July, a ground-breaking bonus point system, a new broadcast partner bringing more live TV games and increased revenues for clubs, and the re-introduction of a winter break.
Taking effect from summer 2016, the new format will see eight groups of five teams play each other once each in a round-robin format across five July dates (16th, 20th, 23th, 27th & 30th).
New broadcast partner BT Sport will show six group stage games live, within a total of 13 matches to be broadcast from next season. This new 80-game group stage will involve all 38 teams not involved in UEFA qualifiers plus winners of this season’s Highland League and Lowland League.
The group stage uses the traditional three points for a win and one point for a draw model however, in another innovation, all drawn matches will go straight to a penalty shoot-out whereby the winner of the shoot-out will be awarded a bonus point, believed to be a first in world football.
The bonus-point system is designed to create greater excitement around every match as well as providing more points variations to increase the number of meaningful games throughout the group stages. The eight group winners and four best runners-up progress to the second round, when they are joined by the four UEFA qualifying clubs and the competition reverts to traditional knock-out format.
The SPFL is delighted to announce that BT Sport will become the exclusive live TV broadcaster of the League Cup from summer 2016. BT Sport will screen six games from the group stage in July and a further seven games from the knock-out rounds for each of Seasons 2016/17, 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20. BT Sport’s new contract will increase the money available for all the clubs significantly.
Another benefit of the new format will be that it allows the re-introduction of a two-weekend winter break for Ladbrokes Premiership clubs during January 2017.

“Fans, the media and clubs alike have expressed a desire for competitive summer football which will be delivered from next July while the ground-breaking bonus point system should add incentive to teams and excitement for supporters.
“We are delighted to welcome BT Sport as our exclusive League Cup TV broadcast partner and to have their support for the new format. Our agreement with BT Sport delivers a huge increase in the number of games being shown live as well as providing increased competition prizemoney for clubs.
“The new format has also enabled the re-introduction of a winter break for Ladbrokes Premiership clubs. We are consulting with Ladbrokes Championship, League 1 and League 2 clubs to establish whether they also favour a winter break in their respective divisions.”

Ach, can't fault them for trying something different. It might work and it gives the fans of diddy teams like Montrose and Dundee United a few games in the cup. I actually like the penalties idea. If the Dons weren't too good for preliminary stages, I may have had a different opinion, but it's better than the usual pointless friendlies at this time of year.
Depending on the weather, I may pop down to take in the Cove Huns v Raith game tonight. Can't be any worse than staying in and listening to the wife's running commentary on Corrie.

The straight to penalties is a good idea. They should have that in the early rounds rather than replays which = game congestion.
It's pure overkill for the tv companies/bt sports here though. Agree it's good for the smaller clubs, hopefully they get their fare share.
Adding more games to an already over crowded fixture list must be a mare for the players and supporters pockets though.

Add that to our top flight top 6 bottom 6 sh1te we have near the end of our season, where a team in 7th could end up with more points than a team in 2nd and we really are a laughing stock. Now a round robin for the league cup, seriously 
There is no exciting football in Scotland. I'd be more entertained watching two gulls fight over a discarded mince pie.
You wonder what's next james, a womens side in the Scottish cup. I can't see it happening though as they may win it and embarrass the sfa.
Just looked it up and apparently of the five games BT Sport are showing of the group stage, Sevco are involved in three of them. They must have been delighted when Hibs won the Cup.

As jamesdean says this experiment will last as long as Aberdeen in Europe and be discarded for some other novel scheme quite soon.

We could get Maribor in the next round. They must be sick of knocking out Scottish teams by now.
£10 adults and £5 for kids to get into Station Park tonight. Much more reasonable than the £20 adult/£12 kid I paid Thursday night to watch the EL game. Fairly entertaining game as well, although the weather was sh1te.
I see United are still bobbins. Pleasing.

Only caught the second half but Rangers looked good going forward and could have scored a few more.
Can't blame the ref for not giving the penalty as there were quite a few players between him and the ball but the linesman must have seen it.
The Motherwell goalie getting away with handball outside the area was a shocker and again the linesman had a clear view.
Still 2-0 was a fair start although the defence are still shocking at set pieces. MW and DW need to get that right.

Even the most biased of Rangers fans have to admit that although they could have scored more, they could easily have shipped two or three (at least) as well. Work to be done on the defensive side of the ball for definite.

It's not exactly novel but merely reintroducing the old format ya dunderheids
Yes exactly the same except it didn't used to be regional groups and each team played every other team in the group home and away plus all teams were involved from day 1 and there was no penalty decider when games drawn.
But apart from that it's the exact same.

Some of Motherwells misses in the 1st half were terrible.
Motherwell should have been 5 up first half. Barely got a touch second.
Arbroath D. United was an entertaining game on Friday night. Both teams had a bit of variety about their play, decent ball players etc. Arbroath fans have a decent side to watch this season. Can think of worse ways of getting fit for the season and if you play at this time of the year you'll play on decent surfaces
