City can have John Stones for £50M

Manchester City want to buy Everton defender John Stones, but would have to pay the Goodison Park club around £50m for the England international.

New City manager Pep Guardiola is keen to make Stones his next high-profile transfer of the summer.

Stones was one of only two outfield players not to see action in England's disappointing Euro 2016 campaign.

Talks have yet to take place, but the asking price would make Stones, 22, Britain's most expensive defender.

Everton have no need to sell, but the possibility is growing that Stones will leave before the start of the new Premier League season.

He was at the centre of a transfer battle last summer when Everton rejected a succession of bids rising up to almost £40m from Chelsea, simply refusing to sell to then manager Jose Mourinho.

Guardiola has made Stones, who has 10 England caps, a priority target as he prepares to renew his rivalry with Mourinho, who is now across the city at Manchester United, and looks certain to get his man.

Manchester City have already signed Ilkay Gundogan from Borussia Dortmund and completed a £13.8m deal for Spain forward Nolito from Celta Vigo after their interest in Euro 2016 was ended by Italy.

Everton will give any money they get for Stones to new manager Ronald Koeman to increase his already considerable transfer fund.

Any industry that pays Roy Hodgson £10,000 a day every day for 4 years has clearly lost all sense of reality.

He had a shocking second half of the season but so did most of the Everton team. If Woy had asked the Everton fans, 100% of them would have told him that Jagielka was the better choice for the Euros.

Stones started to believe his own hype and thought he could simply carry the ball past pressing attackers all the time. Major attitude problems emerged and he even fell out with the crowd, albeit that's not difficult at Goodison.

Nevertheless the main problem is that he's not a great header of the ball, which is not ideal for a centre half.

On balance I'd be a seller as long as we spend the proceeds on the team.

One of the few England players who didn't embarrass himself totally at the Euros, and as many of them are rated as £30m - £50m then £50m seems fair.

what makes me chuckle is when they(media) spout 5hite about him being a ball playing centre half with a sneer insinuating that guys like Sol Campbell, Tony Adams etc... were just hoof it merchants. They(Sol, Adams, Keown etc) were all great centre halves who knew how to defend and rarely lost the ball in their own half. There was never an issue with their passing ability either.

Stones cannot defend and frequently loses the ball. Anyone paying 50m for him is a crack addict

The overvaluation of players makes the housing market collapse look mild enough.

It's truly astonishing that in this country players get reputations/over hyped which does not seem affected by performances on the pitch.

Stones looked very amateurish at times last season and his performances were of a £5m player. Take a look at his performance during LFC's 4-0 win. He looked like Frank Butcher not Franco Baresi.

Rodwell, Sinclair etc show the evidence cannot be ignored. Stones is a ball playing English defender and everyone hyped him up to be the next Bobby Moore. He never will be. He has a lot of potential but currently struggles to actually defend.

£20m is realistic in the current market. But if EFC can pull Man City's trousers down then fair play to them as Koeman will buy about 3 quality players for that including a better replacement.

Everton should emulate Liverpool and run off laughing into the sunset with £50M of City's money. Mane £30M? Stones £50M?

Pogba has done well this season. I think he will turn down United but if he did come for £100m why should the fans worry? It is the Glazer's money.

One could look at it like that 1%, an alternattive view is to think what would have happened if utd had kept him.......Moyes might be leading you to your 4th champ on the trot...........

at least city are being better in this window than others, if they had singed Chiellini 5 years ago there history would had been so much different.

I'm a blue so a little biased maybe but he is very good.He's only 22 so City or whoever gets him could get 10 years from him.Young lads have dips in form and last season was a struggle for him no doubt.I think he'll kick on next season and hope it's with Everton.

Gone are the days when you get a young player and the transfer works out as value because you might get 10 years out of them, in the modern game you will pay them wages well above their worth and guess what, if they turn out decent they will hold your club to ransom and want a massive wage until there mid thirties, ala rooney.

Better off going for 10 john stones and hoping one would work out.

Michael Hector & Jake Cooper are nearly as good as John Stones, who could both improve past him under the right coach imo.

Swap a few things around and that could have been written about Raheem Sterling.

To echo what a few have said on here, he's not worth £50m and I'm not sure why we rejected £40m last year (although if his price has gone up £10m on the back of a very poor season then maybe that decision has been justified)

He may turn out to be a good defender but at the moment he isn't - his best position may end up in front of the back 4 as he is not a bad reader of the ball and is comfortable on the ball but isn't good at the "dirty" centre half stuff like winning headers and throwing his body in front of shots - he does time a good last ditch tackle though

Its funny how City bought Lescott for £24m and may potentially buy Stones for £50m but have never been interested in our best centre half in the last decade Jagielka - a proper defender
