This is directed to actual fans, and not the idiots on here that on a constant anti-English wind up (Hamsterdam, Cricketc*nt2, Outpost, ect).

I know we won't win the trophy, that fourth favorites is ludicrous and as soon as we come up against a half technically decent outfit like Portugal or Belgium it'll probably be penalties then home, but we can still be excited and support the side, can't we? The Tottenham contingent, Vardy and Rashford have come out of nowhere, and we have a very exciting team, even if not a potential tournament winning team. And we showed when we beat Germany we can beat anyone, so it isn't like we're going there as a Scotland or Gareth-Bale-less Wales, we should put up a fight against anyone.

Anyway, I can't wait for it to start. Three big games against good teams in the group.

probably because every single tournament since 1966 the media hype up the nation to an expectancy of winning it. Couple that with mega hype for any new player to the side that can kick a ball. This years nominations for the mega hype include Kane, Rashford, Vardy etc. etc.

JC1326, there is a little bit of hype about Rashford but that's about it imo. you're right that people in general are way too negative about England. Unfortunately its combination of the English mentality of wanting to knock people down plus the club rivalries overspilling into international football.

Feeling the need to weigh in here..
The reason for negativity is that England are under achieving
Hugely
You have massive resources
I am welsh
we are scratching around the lower leagues to fill out the squad
as are norn iron and the republic
By that standard there must be at least a 1000 professionals in this country capable of representing you at an international tourny
Yet you are flucking useless
The rugby team have been to 2 world cup finals
the cricket team the best test team in the world
About a dozen F1 world champs since 66
Half a dozen heavy weight world champs
Umpteen major golf champions
Andy Murray has won wimbledon and 2 Brits have won the flucking Tour de France for fecks sake

I give you this from Luis Suarez in his book 'Crossing The Line'..
'I genuinely love english football but England have gone out of another world cup and another debate was about to start; the post mortems began. When people talk about a lack of resources it makes me laugh. If England over there in the first world dont have enough resources, with the quality and quantity of players there are, with the facilities that they have to train, with the economic muscle the game has there, with the millions of players there are, where does that leave the rest of us? Where does that leave Uruguay?'

YOur football team is a national disgrace
Already you have been out possessioned by the might of Turkey and Australia in 2 friendlies
IF portugal turn up the night in the mood they were the other night you are in serious trouble
God help youse

It's not being negative it's being realistic and about time too.

They're a terrible team. Only positive is the English media now realise that and we don't have to hear all the garbage about
how well they're going to do these days.

Just change the word negative to realistic from the thread title, ta.
Report asparagus June 2, 2016 5:00 PM BST
Thelatarps, anyone who tries to compare the achievements of the rugby team and cricket to the football team has clearly got an agenda. It's an absolutely ridiculous comparison. As you are well aware most of the world doesn't play these sports. Football is the one truly worldwide sport. Other sports are irrelevant. Being outpossessioned by teams is also irrelevant.
Report thelatarps June 2, 2016 5:44 PM BST
Its a good point mr asparagus
The whole world does play the beautiful game
but the world cup isnt going anywhere outside of europe or south america anytime soon
In fact its prob not going to anyone out of europe for that matter in the near future considering they have won the last 3
England are one of the big nations in europe
along with france, spain, italy and germany
That leaves you in a select group of 5 for this tournament
These are teams who really have to see anything but the semi final as failure
Living in the land of the oval ball as i do, I would argue that the World cup win in 2003 was a huge achievement
Rugby Union is weighted toward the southern hemisphere nations almost as much as soccer is to europe.
For Clive Woodward, Martin Johnson, Dallaglio, Wilkinson to do what they did in australia was a phenomenon.
The only team from europe to win it after all.
As a callow youth i remember cheering on the aussies that day.
Remember turning to a more sober corner of the bar to see many older more knowledgable welsh rugby followers privately celebrating the red rose success.
They knew what it meant for british rugby
Now I am older I can see they were right.
Just can not see the same thing happening for the soccer team
sorry

TheBaron, that has nothing to do with the current team.

Thelatarps, I'm not a close follower of rugby so can't tell you about the achievement of England winning the world cup other than outside of the Uk only 4 or 5 other countries are contenders.
What i can say is for England in this tournament the goal has to be the semi finals or better, though I'd see a quarter final defeat as an acceptable performance depending on how that defeat occurs. I just don't understand the negativity before the tournament has even started. England have a squad who all want to play for the team rather than to satisfy their individual ego's and who we should be getting behind. Very few countries are hostile to their players like England 'fans'  are.
Report thelatarps June 2, 2016 6:45 PM BST
My experience of dealing with england fans is unconditional support until they lose and then the grumbling starts
Cant actually remember tomatoes pelting the players as has happened in italy on occasion
Effigies of hugo sanchez burning in the streets of mexico city
Or mock executions for Brazilian keepers in rio
Forumites are punters
We are realistic.
We know that backing an england team which is in transition and is going to be wildly different from the one that went through qualifying, backing them at 8/1 or whatever is no value at all.
2yrs ago england were 100/1
that was barely value.
Hodgson may get it right and find himself some sort of magic combination
Best of luck to him
Could happen
But at these odds?
sorry no.

Defensibly they still have too many players not good enough to play at international level.

Attacking options are probably the best they have had for a few years.

On balance the weaknesses in defence will be shown up next week.

They should get through GROUP stage though......and hopefully they get a bit luck in avoiding the more technically gifted teams until later stages .

My gripe with England is that we're never really good or bad.  We stay in the safe middle ground the players too frightened to go for it. The mentality of the players has always been this way and I see no reason why it should change.

I would get behind an England team that really gave it a go regardless of the result ...but its 50 years and I'm still waiting.
Report marychain1 June 2, 2016 8:21 PM BST
I don't see anything in this England team that is any different from any England side going into a major tournament in living memory. Our players are still technically inferior, with less intelligence. Same shape, same weaknesses. Only thing that has changed is some of the names. I've said it before and I'll say it again. How far we go depends purely on how long we can go on getting drawn against weak sides.
Report DAFFODIL1 June 2, 2016 8:47 PM BST
England are poor in the technical dept compared to the likes of France,Spain,Germany.
They play the same old same old football.
The last technically gifted footballer England had was Gasgoigne.
As soon as they concede, heads drop.
Pundits big up these England players on a weekly basis but soon as they get to a big tournament they flop because they are not playing with other European players (with whom they normally play with) of better technical quality.
In short England are sh!te,garbage, also ran's, there to make up the numbers only.

it was the same at the world cup in which his set up with baines and johnson attacking overlapping full backs, with wellbeck and sterling in front of them, all you could do was shut your eyes and prey we wouldn't get a good hiding the man is a fool

i understand any manager who is trying to find his best team but a decision should be made early enough so we are at least organized going into an event, hodgson is media driven and has yet to find the right blend and once again we don't know what he is going to do and neither do the team

tonight a great opportunity to put out your best team not best hyped players best TEAM roy he really has no clue what he is doing imo

normally england have delusions of grandeur going into major tournaments and the manager gets fired when they fail miserably. That changed completely at the last world cup and was replaced with a defeatist attitude from fans and the press and the lauding of the manager after one of the worst performances at a major tournament.

At the very least a manager should be able to instil some semblance of self-belief and fight in a bunch of players, make the team greater than the sum of its parts. That's what smaller nations do. How he has held onto the job I'll never know. He is still held up as the wiley old sage of football knowledge/management. Stealing a living for donkey's years.

We would have gone very close in Mexico in 70, but for a Brazil side that was absolutly brilliant and Gordon Banks couldn't play against West Germany in the quarter-finals. We weren't expected to win in 1966, but we did, anything can happen and thats the big hope we have.
