I remember Dumitrache (Rumania or is it now Romania) from the 1970 WC - just looked him up on wiki - poor fella died in 2007 aged 59 - might have gone to juventus but the communist regime refused to allow it
Report clacherholiday2 June 3, 2016 8:11 PM BST
stoichkov might not be looked back on in the same light as other 90's strikers such as george weah or batistuta as he never made it in italy, the best league in the world at the time.

theres no doubt at all he got the recognition he deserved, he won the spanish league 4 times with barcelona and got to 2 european cup finals with them, winning one of them.  he won the ballon d'or in the 94 world cup year, its just from our perspoective in the uk he (and hagi) appeared to emerge from obscurity at the usa world cup, he was already an established european star by then.

Jimmy Greaves not only the most gifted goalscorer but also the most beautiful player.
Nobody could, with his back to goal, turn and beat 3 or 4 defenders and score with the same style and vision...not even Best, or Cruff, or Pele or Messi.
Greaves was a masterpiece.

Scored the two goals here to give us a 2-1 win at Wembley after Scotland had been reduced to 10 men early on.

Ronaldinho.  He wasn't at his very best for long, but for a period of about 12 months he was better than Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo or Messi.  Whilst at Barca, I once saw him receive the ball near the half way line, quickly turn away from from 2 opposition players who were so bamboozled that they ran into each other and ended up on the deck in a heap.

Ronaldinho

The Barca front three of Ronaldhino, Eto'oo and Messi was wonderful and that Barca side I think around 2005 under Rijkard was the most exciting football playing side I have ever had the privilege to watch in awe ( apart from Brasil '70 and '82 of course ). You can kep your tika taka, that is not football as God intended.

just a bit of fun Irish. Nothing wrong with nostalgia and a bit of bullsheite.

You want to try comparing greatest cricketers ever! Some people think Alistair Cook would be a shoe in for Opener in Englands Greatest XL. He wouldn't even make my list of water carriers!

Respect. Would have a hard time arguing they were better than Messi and Ronaldo, but Ronaldinho and Zidane are still my favourite players ever. Ronaldinho in particular, was magical to watch. The standing ovation game at Bernabeu was perfection and the dancing goal at Stamford Bridge one of my faves ever. Zidane as well, a ballerina on a football field.

IMO I'd hazard a guess that 95%+ of the population of the UK
have never seen Maradona play near 10 hours of football live (maybe much less)
given that he'd long gone from Napoli when Ch4 'Football Italia' started
and the tendency (in those days) of BBC and ITV not showing all live World Cup games,
be it due to group fixture clashes, time schedules or only highlights
(you'd get 3 minutes of Paraguay v Belgium)

Yet so many keyboard experts personally portray him as the all-conqering Messiah, in football terms

Only 4 major medals and about 20 international goals from the age of 22

How spoilt we are now with hundreds and thousands of hours of Messi, Zidane, Ronaldo, Buffon etc.
