I heard one of their players say they just 'forgot' to win the 74 final. Maybe the early goal made them think it was too easy.

Cruyff is an icon. The sight of that Swedish defender wondering where he went is one of the best moments in football history imo.

Had to laugh at that . "The Cruyff turn".

A proper legend and one of the all time greats. A true legend. RIP Sir and if there's a God's eleven in heaven you will walk into the side.....even with a pulled hamstring.

I’m not religious. In Spain all 22 players make the sign of the cross before they enter the pitch. If it works all matches must therefore end in a draw.

Some of his quotes are brilliant.

The turn seemed so instinctive. I wonder if he had ever practiced it as such. I'll need to google it later to see what he said about it.

Started following football in 1970 and remember the great Ajax side of the early 70's who with Cruyff won the European cup 3 years on the trot.
Then the world cup in'74.Pity he didnt go to the 78 world cup in Argentina as he would only have been about 30 years old.

I read an interview with him in 442 sometime in the 90s. He said when they were winning easily he tried to hit the post on purpose because he loved the sound of it. Always remembered that.

A Liverpool fan was on 5 live the other night telling a wonderfull story. Liverpool were drawn away to Ajax in the European cup in the early 70s when Shankley was manager.

Long story short, approx. 180 Liverpool fans hired a plane to see the match and couldn't land due to fog. They had to land elswhere and be bused to the match.

When they eventually got into the ground at half time the score was 5-1 Ajax! Don't know the final result but it was 2-2 back at Anfield.

Cruyff pulled all the strings as per usual.

Shankely after the first leg claimed Ajax were a defending team.Laugh

Great player.  He was also one of the great footballing personalities of his age.  Not as rebellious as his contemporary Gunter Netzer(another great of the era) but he very much knew his own mind.   In terms of personality the only current player that is similar is possibly Zlatan imo.

The kind of personalities that are non existent in English footballers for some reason.

He certainly put his a55 on the line mr cruiff
as all great people do
i never saw him play but always thought the 1974 team failure to win the world cup was the greatest sporting tragedy
In a way it may have been for the best to have got so far with the dutch but fell just short
like puskas it adds to the legend
and of course it had to be ze chermans
in both cases

Cruyff never went to the 78 world cup due to kidnap threats against his family. Considering it went into extra time and Holland hit the post late on it makes one wonder how things would have panned out if Cruyff had been there....
