Another Liverpool - Utd game, another petty point scoring squabble about whose fans behaved the worst.

Bound to happen given the kick off time.

I think Utd fans probably went with the idea that they'd put up a good showing. Remember the Moyes OT game where we battered them but the fans made a point of singing loud just so our lot wouldn't boss it. I think they planned the same last night. Then they saw the Kop. I take it everyone's seen that snap of the pre-match line up. Half the Utd team looking over their shoulders at the kop in awe. Their fans then proceed to see one team moving forwards playing exciting, attacking and brave football while their lot are going backwards at a rate of knots, playing plodding safe hoofball to the big galoot, over £60M spent on Depay and Martial and they barely get a look in. If you picked a best 11 from last night it'd be De Gea and 10 outfield Liverpool players.

Can fully understand if the fans' mood turns darker. Bit sad, but we've done similar.

It's the herd mentality I think Mike.  I find it hard to believe that thousands of Man United fans actually think "the Sun was right", as they kept singing.  I mean anyone could go online and find the Hillsborough report in seconds if they were actually interested in the truth (spoiler alert: the Sun was wrong).  But a chant starts and people are fired up for the game and just join in without thinking about it.  What we need is more of the good guys to make a stand and boo their own fans when they sing this rubbish.  Easier said than done though; I say that as a Spurs fan who has to listen to all the Sol Campbell/Wenger nonsense.

we've never had that problem because everyone loves us.

Good post and pretty much as it is. Absolutely no excuse for last night is the first thing to say.

I'm going to try and explain what happened last night and happens many times when we play each other. Before anybody takes offence I'm not saying I agree with it, just telling it as it is. Much of it is disgusting on both sides tbh.

Fans are strange in so much they try and drown out the opposition fans in any which way they can. Last night we tried to drown out the forty thousand plus fans singing YNWA but the PA simply turned up the YNWA music even louder.

Later the Liverpool fans started singing "stand up if you hate Man U" to which our fans responded with "stand up if you're a murderer" Pretty extreme-Now I'm pretty sure that most fans singing that are referring to Heysel and blaming Liverpool fans for some of those deaths. United fans see the two tragedies as being dealt with differently by the media and by Liverpool generally. Not saying I agree, just telling you how it is. Its interesting our fans didn't try and drown out the stand up chant from Liverpool, merely changed some of the words and kept same tune and that is a recurrent theme

When Liverpool chant "Livvvverpoooool" the United fans use the same tune and change the word to "murderrrreeers" again in reference to Heysel and as a "weapon" to beat them with. i.e. remind them about something United fans think they are trying to pretend didn't happen (hence the justice for the 39 chants)

Then comes the problem. Three or four times Liverpool fans sang the "Fergie's right....." song. Each time United fans responded with the "The Sun was right...", i.e. changing the words again. Never did the United fans sing this other than in response to the "Fergie's right" chant. Sadly this song could have no meaning other than in reference to Hillsborough even though it wasn't mentioned. It was wrong and should not have been sung, end of. For sure many United fans would know it was in reference to Hillsborough  but I can assure you many others would be stupid enough not to understand which is why its louder than it should be considering many refuse to sing it.

There were some Munich chants last night albeit not sustained or too loud. There were also those idiots in the Main Stand to our right who were running up and down the gangway doing aeroplane gestures. That always gets the reaction they are looking for as our idiots can't seem to contain themselves.

This is football and football attracts idiots at all clubs, we have to put up with the Munich songs and gestures at Stoke, Leeds, City, West Ham and a whole host of other clubs. You rarely hear of the United fans reactions to the songs at those clubs and that is because the United fans can't respond by "getting back" at them like they can with Liverpool. Its human nature albeit an ugly side of it.

Just to be clear I'm not making excuses for any of the above, I actually thought we let ourselves down at times last night

Oh and Liverpool won 2-0 ...
