Definite contact, the palace defenders right knee slide into Benteke's left foot, that's why he goes over, probably a bit easily but a penalty it is.

Report asparagus March 6, 2016 7:39 PM GMT
The laws of the game do not state that because there was contact it's a penalty. A penalty should only be given if the contact is enough to impede the players progress. If not it's not a foul. In this case there was contact but it didn't look to me like Benteke's momentum was stopped or that he had to go down. Therefore it shouldn't have been a penalty. Unfortunately so many pundits misguide the public with there interpretation.

Good to see that the art of debate means we have all angles covered here...!

I am, as some will know, an ardent Palace supporter, my view live and after seeing it numerous times, is that it was a penalty and over the 90 minutes gave Pool the three points they deserved for their display after Milner was dismissed.

Gutted by the way we lost the game, rather than the loss itself, we have the wrong mentality throughout the team at the moment and even Cabaye who had rave reviews early season has started to go missing when others are looking to him to put his foot on the ball and buy the team some time.

I would put my entire bank balance on any person tuning in today without prior knowledge taking the view that it was us who had been reduced to 10 men given our inability to retain the ball or close Pool down when they had it, I lost count of the number of times the ball went straight from McCarthy or the back four into Mignolet's arms with no striker in view, where our spare player went is a mystery I am still seeking to solve....!
Report kincsem March 7, 2016 1:57 AM GMT
Sure he touched Benteke's foot, but he didn't trip him.  Benteke went diving.
This "there was contact" explanation is ridiculous.  It is a contact game.
If "there was contact" resulted in a free every time there would be hundreds of frees in a game.
Report TiredandWeary March 7, 2016 4:18 AM GMT
if you look hard in slow motion you can see that the knee of the palace defender makes minimal contact with Bentekes trailing leg.As his leading foot is planted firmly on the grass at this instant, it is increduluos to believe that this can cause a professional athlete to fall over. What amazes me always is that the MOTD panel of ex players seem to agree that it was a penalty as there was some contact.Football is a contact sport and there is a difference between having contact and fouling someone.
Report Poppydog. March 7, 2016 10:15 AM GMT
If there's contact in the box....go down

Imagine the scenario of all 18 players lying on the ground, as a corner swings in
Report johnizere March 7, 2016 10:18 AM GMT
Have to agree, this 'there was contact' rubbish has made a mockery of football today. MOTD last night, Hartson quite opinionated that it was a definite penalty and Benteke was 'entitled to go down'... which is another statement that gets my goat. Why don't players go down so easily outside the box?.... there are hundreds of 'slightest touches' during any game, but it's only the ones inside the box that makes divers go to ground so pathetically.
Would 4th official instant video analysis make any difference?, I doubt it, as seeing some people have their opinions whether it is a legitimate penalty claim or not. Howard Webb the other day made a case for a penalty (which wasn't given), and I couldn't see why he would have given it. But there again, I'm not a referee.
Report PorcupineorPineapple March 7, 2016 10:24 AM GMT
I don't think there's any debate here personally. He's running at speed and the contact comes just as he's lifting his standing foot off the ground. I don't know if anyone here has ever played any sport of any kind or just been messing round with mates when young but if your ankle gets clipped in that position then you'll be doing very well to stay on your feet if you're running.

I think people's opinions are being coloured by the fact the first couple of camera angles made it look like a blatant dive.
Report unclepuncle March 7, 2016 1:37 PM GMT
Benteke probbaly could have stayed on his feet if he really tried to, but he would have had to break stride, take a stumble or a little extra step, and in so doing the ball would probably have gone out for a goal kick and the good attacking chance Liverpool had would have gone. He did the right thing by going down and the linesman called it right.

Vardy's penalty against Arsenal was much more of a case of someone 'buying a penalty' by making sure there was contact.

Report miss.wales March 7, 2016 4:15 PM GMT
Benteke's response in the interview immediately after was "I think there was contact".

In other words he didn't know if he had been touched. Undoubtedly the reason he took that approach was that if replays showed there was no contact he didn't want to appear to be outright liar.

We all know he dived and any number of indignant Liverpool fans claiming that it was a clear penalty is not going to change that.
Report Injera March 7, 2016 4:44 PM GMT
What I look for is the other leg.

The leg that's not touched.

The player will lock his knee so that he falls over. He does that to exagerate the 'contact' (yuk) and influence the ref.

It's unsporting and simulation (yuk again). 2 offences in one, for which the diver should be penalised.

I would say though that refs need to give more fouls for when a player is impeded but doesn't fall over.

A bit of leadership from the ref supremo and the FA wouldn't go amiss...
Report geordie1956 March 7, 2016 5:07 PM GMT

Both sets of fans could,nt understand why palace didn't go for the kill with us having 10 men. Maybe a lack of confidence was the answer, and we were much better with 10
Report charwell. March 7, 2016 8:33 PM GMT
Incredible. We have had 2 pens this season. Palace, Everton etc have had at least 3 x more. Lots of dodgy ones in there.

Yet we win our clear 2nd pen and the world and his wife call it a dive (well Palace, Mancs and bluenoses). These dimwits should try running at speed and let somebody clip their trailing foot and see if they don't fall.

Blame the defender for being a fool. Credit where due 10 men beat 11 from behind.
Report OnePercenter March 7, 2016 8:55 PM GMT
charwell, if you think that was a clear penalty then you need your head examined. Was there enough contqct to bring Benteke down like that? No. So he must be guilty of simulation.
Report geordie1956 March 7, 2016 9:14 PM GMT
the problem with charwell's argument is he wasn't travelling at speed as he was already going down from the non existent challenge - it was at this point that he was touched slightly - as benteke said he thought he had been caught - so he didn't know himself

a poor decision by the linesman who i believe thought the original challenge where there wasn't contact was worthy of a penalty
