But I really, really hate the way penalties are somehow given these days Even more annoying is how many pundits seem to be happy with it and justify it

Just seen it again and looks like there was some contact but I think Benteke saw him coming and was always going to go down. That's the way the game is these days - i.e. very cynical.

no other players go down feeling a slight clip like that
not intentional and shouldn't be a pen imo but been on the end of ones like that and that's just how the game has gone
its just a benteke thingno other players go down feeling a slight clip like that not intentional and shouldn't be a pen imo but been on the end of ones like that and that's just how the game has gone
Slight contact but the ball was gone....there would be ten penalties per game for slight contact......if he stood up it would have been a goal kick...sick to death of players falling over , the game is a farce...

Cast iron pen, not sure how anyone can say otherwise. He got past his man and was looking to cross.
Clear as day he caught his leg with his knee. Nobody can carry in when your back leg is taken.
In conclusion OP - you are blind.

However that contact is about 1-3% of the contact made, when teams are jostling at corner or free kick set pieces.
It's just madness how football has gone

they are very good at playing for the contact,he saw the player stupidly dive in and let him catch him, harry kane did something similar yesterday to get someone sent off,he had actually jumped him then put his leg down to make sure of the contact

plenty of pens are given when the player has no chance of getting the ball
ie the ball is pushed ahead and the contact is waited for
being able to get on the ball after has not been that big an issue from my watching of football in recent years

idiotic challenge asking for trouble but benteke could have avoided contact if he'd wanted to but he made sure there was slightest touch on the defender

How could Bentekke avoid contact when it was his standing foot and his eyes were looking at the ball in front of the defender!
In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king.

the touch did not put Benteke down. he fell deliberately. No penalty.
Any idiot was parrots there was contact or i've seen them given should give up thinking for themselves and just suck Alam Shearers one
Embarassing. cant see the same ref giving a penalty like that to Palace or against Chelsea or City. maybe against Leicester though!

like when Rooney dived to get the penalty against Sol Campbell and ended Arsenals unbeaten run.
The pundits probably yes Alan, said what was he thinking trying to make a tackle there. He deserved to concede a penalty but Rooney clearly dived and was not touched!
It makes me mad!

Watch that link. Some footballers should be ashamed and embarassed and so should some fans. There was contact indeed!

shows that using video evidence is a waste of time because loons like pardew even when confronted with it move on to question the motives and actions of player and benteke

The laws of the game do not state that because there was contact it's a penalty. A penalty should only be given if the contact is enough to impede the players progress. If not it's not a foul. In this case there was contact but it didn't look to me like Benteke's momentum was stopped or that he had to go down. Therefore it shouldn't have been a penalty. Unfortunately so many pundits misguide the public with there interpretation.

fifa were in town the other day, meeting all the british fa's....
Thats probably why they were so many sending offs and penalties this weekend, cos fifa turned the thumbscrews on the refs.

As ever multiple opinions regarding a refereeing decision. Definite pen definite dive dear lord the only person who knows if he dived or not is benteke and he will tell you only one thing Didnt look like a pires job where the player moves his foot to look like he was touched The ref gave it None of us wanted liv to win i dont like it you dont like it but there we are, we got to live with it

Stupid tackle lungeing in,stay on your feet idiot. Benteke decided to go down as he knew potential penalty,if Benteke wanted to stay on his feet he could quite easily of done so,makes me laugh watching footballers hitting the deck so easily when you compare with other sports like rugby whereby theres a gang of opponents struggling to bring one player to the deck, breath on a footballer in the box and he dives to the ground trying to con the ref as Benteke did.

You can't con a ref when you have been fouled you buffoon.
If there was no contact and he went down then that's trying to con a ref. Such as Rooney, Young, Mirallas..........

Never fails the old bitter barsteward aka Fergies flap talking the usual moronic drivel.
Anyone notice the face of the said Fergie at the end of the United game? I must thank Sky for that image

Good to see that the art of debate means we have all angles covered here...!
I am, as some will know, an ardent Palace supporter, my view live and after seeing it numerous times, is that it was a penalty and over the 90 minutes gave Pool the three points they deserved for their display after Milner was dismissed.
Gutted by the way we lost the game, rather than the loss itself, we have the wrong mentality throughout the team at the moment and even Cabaye who had rave reviews early season has started to go missing when others are looking to him to put his foot on the ball and buy the team some time.
I would put my entire bank balance on any person tuning in today without prior knowledge taking the view that it was us who had been reduced to 10 men given our inability to retain the ball or close Pool down when they had it, I lost count of the number of times the ball went straight from McCarthy or the back four into Mignolet's arms with no striker in view, where our spare player went is a mystery I am still seeking to solve....!

Sure he touched Benteke's foot, but he didn't trip him. Benteke went diving. This "there was contact" explanation is ridiculous. It is a contact game. If "there was contact" resulted in a free every time there would be hundreds of frees in a game.

if you look hard in slow motion you can see that the knee of the palace defender makes minimal contact with Bentekes trailing leg.As his leading foot is planted firmly on the grass at this instant, it is increduluos to believe that this can cause a professional athlete to fall over. What amazes me always is that the MOTD panel of ex players seem to agree that it was a penalty as there was some contact.Football is a contact sport and there is a difference between having contact and fouling someone.

Have to agree, this 'there was contact' rubbish has made a mockery of football today. MOTD last night, Hartson quite opinionated that it was a definite penalty and Benteke was 'entitled to go down'... which is another statement that gets my goat. Why don't players go down so easily outside the box?.... there are hundreds of 'slightest touches' during any game, but it's only the ones inside the box that makes divers go to ground so pathetically. Would 4th official instant video analysis make any difference?, I doubt it, as seeing some people have their opinions whether it is a legitimate penalty claim or not. Howard Webb the other day made a case for a penalty (which wasn't given), and I couldn't see why he would have given it. But there again, I'm not a referee.

I don't think there's any debate here personally. He's running at speed and the contact comes just as he's lifting his standing foot off the ground. I don't know if anyone here has ever played any sport of any kind or just been messing round with mates when young but if your ankle gets clipped in that position then you'll be doing very well to stay on your feet if you're running.
I think people's opinions are being coloured by the fact the first couple of camera angles made it look like a blatant dive.

Benteke probbaly could have stayed on his feet if he really tried to, but he would have had to break stride, take a stumble or a little extra step, and in so doing the ball would probably have gone out for a goal kick and the good attacking chance Liverpool had would have gone. He did the right thing by going down and the linesman called it right.
Vardy's penalty against Arsenal was much more of a case of someone 'buying a penalty' by making sure there was contact.

Benteke's response in the interview immediately after was "I think there was contact".
In other words he didn't know if he had been touched. Undoubtedly the reason he took that approach was that if replays showed there was no contact he didn't want to appear to be outright liar.
We all know he dived and any number of indignant Liverpool fans claiming that it was a clear penalty is not going to change that.

The player will lock his knee so that he falls over. He does that to exagerate the 'contact' (yuk) and influence the ref.
It's unsporting and simulation (yuk again). 2 offences in one, for which the diver should be penalised.
I would say though that refs need to give more fouls for when a player is impeded but doesn't fall over.
A bit of leadership from the ref supremo and the FA wouldn't go amiss...

It'll be interesting to hear the views of those suggesting it was a definite penalty the next time one goes against their own team - somehow i can hazard a guess that the opinions they offer will change

miss.wakes - "I think there was contact" does not make him a liar as it is not his decision, although I believe it was a wrong decision to give a penalty for such minimal, if any contact.

If he would,nt have gone down benteke would have been criticised by our own fans for not getting the pen. Was at the game and spoke to some palace fans afterwards. Both sets of fans could,nt understand why palace didn't go for the kill with us having 10 men. Maybe a lack of confidence was the answer, and we were much better with 10

Incredible. We have had 2 pens this season. Palace, Everton etc have had at least 3 x more. Lots of dodgy ones in there.
Yet we win our clear 2nd pen and the world and his wife call it a dive (well Palace, Mancs and bluenoses). These dimwits should try running at speed and let somebody clip their trailing foot and see if they don't fall.
Blame the defender for being a fool. Credit where due 10 men beat 11 from behind.

charwell, if you think that was a clear penalty then you need your head examined. Was there enough contqct to bring Benteke down like that? No. So he must be guilty of simulation.

the problem with charwell's argument is he wasn't travelling at speed as he was already going down from the non existent challenge - it was at this point that he was touched slightly - as benteke said he thought he had been caught - so he didn't know himself
a poor decision by the linesman who i believe thought the original challenge where there wasn't contact was worthy of a penalty

I've seen a lot of people mention the size of Benteke in relation to the amount of contact saying it wasn't enough to bring him down...might be just me but surely it's the opposite, big fella running at speed and his only standing foot at impact is taken away...

If a penalty was given for all contact in the box then there would be a penalty following every corner. Refs allow full wrestling matches from corners. The same behaviour is not allowed from free kicks.
