I always have to question when people cite Pele as the best...how many times did you actually see him play? there wasn't exactly untold live coverage of the hundred of games he played in for Santos in the 50's and 60's.
1. Bergkamp 2. Henry 3. Real Ronaldo (Brazilian) 4. Ronaldinho 5. Figo 6. Messi 7. Viera 8. Pires 9. Raul 10. Scholes

Maradonna was a bit before my time. The rest I've seen pretty much the entirety of their careers bar the early stages of Bergkamp. An honourable mention for Tony Adams, best ever centre half in the Prem and better than the acclaimed Madini who was afforded the luxury of playing for better managers in better teams in slower leagues to help him look better, win more and last longer.

I honestly don't think any player that has played in the Premiership would be in it. It is just what is brainwashed into the UK Viewer. Well, some of them.

Mes, Maldini was the best centre-half in the whole wide world at a time when the Italian League was the best in the world by a long way.
Understandable that you have a slight bias towards Arsenal, of course, but steady on a bit.
Adams was a decent centre-back, for sure, but no more than that, just another Englishman routinely exposed at International level. The year before he won his first title at Arsenal, he had been made to look second-rate at Euro 88.

At which point, he was a raging alcoholic which didn't help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ91CP7k7X0 Also the only Captain to Captain a team to the title in 3 different decades The Adams I remember, was the dogs bollox

It's not about goals, the thread is not called the top 10 goalscorers of all time, it's called which footballers are in your top 10, and Bergkamp had everything in his locker as a footballer, he was too good a passer/assister for him to made the outright striker which is why he played off either Wright, Anelka or Henry.

He was 31 by the year 2000, and was there to provide goals. Only played more than 30 games in a season twice out of 11 due to injury or age considering he was 36 in his last year, all players in their mid-thirties go into decline, at his best he was the best. And given how many goalscorers Arsenal had in the team it was never an issue, Henry, Pires, Ljungberg, Wiltord, Anelka, Overmars all score bucketloads. He was the visionary in the team as corny as that may sound.

Why do people insist on calling the Brazilian Ronaldo the 'REAL' Ronaldo?
I can understand it when Ronaldo was in his early days at Utd diving and not doing much else. He was a poor imitation of the legendary Brazilian goal machine.
But since then he, along with Messi, have been the two most outstanding players of this generation.
'Real' Ronaldo my arse.

You can't compare both Ronaldo's ffs, the Real Ronaldo, the original one, was more skillful, more agile and more naturally talented and scored higher quality goals, Crissy, as some painfully love struck dozy tarts on this forum call him has got better and better but that's largely down to power, flat track bullying and dead ball situations. There is not a lot of finesse to his game.

Garrincha, Just Fontaine, Raymond Kopa, Nils Liedholm, John Charles, di Stefano, Matthews, Neil Franklin and on and on and on.
Impossible to call imo.
Interesting that we agree about modern players though Clydebank.

Far too difficult a task, so just chucking a few names in and sticking with those I've seen.
Paolo Maldini, Lionel Messi, Ruud Gullit, Zinedine Zidane, Gigi Buffon, Diego Maradona, Paul Gascoigne, Lothar Matthaus, Ryan Giggs, Eric Cantona, Zico.

This is actually very difficult. In cricket you at least have averages which don't give you the full story but at least give you a shart. I know you now have stats in football but they are a recent development and apparently last year highlighted Lovren as the best defender in the Premier League

One measurement of a great player is to make his team-mates, like Didier Deschamps seem great players too. Another measure is World Cup performance, the only question against Messi. And then the feeling that watching a certain player is completely different from watching other footballers.Force of personality. Platini and, on a smaller stage, Cantona had it in spades. George Best didn't And legacy: taking your club or your country from there to there.
For me the greatest of them all was Cruyff, for transforming Ajax, Holland and Barcelona. I can't have Messi above Maradona and I think Pele trumps them both with three World Cups. Never saw Di Stefano but it's him or Zidane for fifth place.

This list shows how some posters select their wagers, totally disregarding form, and just selecting their preferences for personal reasons,as opposed to what they achieved. Both of those Italian greats played as full backs as well as centre backs.Their performances spoke for themselves, hence the expression "defending is an art-form" in Italy.

Your order of the football gods is plausible, marychain. Messi is by far the greatest in the consistent brilliance and unshakeable temperament he brings to all games, and I suspect that all managers would pencil him in first on a Friday night. But Maradona won a World Cup on his own and damn near pulled off the same trick in Rome four years later. Platini said that Maradona could make an orange obey him as well as Zidane controlled a football but I think there was jealousy. Jordi Cruyff, bless him, was about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike. But imagine having Johann as your father!

I thought Peter Shilton was the best goalie in the world for a number of years. Funny how we struggle so much in that department now when 30 years ago we possibly had 5 of the top 10.
I think Desailly was the best centre half

Bobby Charlton the only legitimate contender from these islands for a top ten place imho.
If you are of a certain age, you will remember him only after 66. He still was magnificent in the 68 European Cup final and against Brazil in 70. Sadly, he was subbed in the QF. Played a lot of crap games for Man U before retirement.

Greaves, before he got meningitis in his mid 20s, which he always felt took away a little of his blistering pace was as good as Messi, not just a great goalscorer but nobody could glide past players in quite the way Greaves did, he would turn and beat 3 or 4 players and pass the ball into the net, there has never been a player quite like him.

Diego armando maradona, grew up with the coont and you always have to believe your eyes Pele, he was the goat growing up Zidane, Best of the last 20yrs imo Stan Matthews, way ahead of his time and the germans and the eyetalians rated him John Charles, wales and serie a ledge. enuff said Hughie Gallacher, 5-1 at wembley won the league for newcastle which really is mission impossible Georgie, you know. Once upon a long ago he rolled into the neverneverlands and got a 2-2 draw. Cruyff, Neeskins, Krol, van der Kerkhoff bros, the works. Johan said it was the greatest performance he ever saw Tom Finney, as good as stanley, if not better. Bloke down the boozer said he was the best he ever saw at the lane Blanchflower, Class. Glory. Style. Hero from the North Xavi, you could say he has redifined the footballer. I doubt i will see his like again.

Never played in a World Cup so he can be discounted.
Nobody in South America has ever even heard of him.
