Well I thought Liverpool then I saw an old grainy 1950s movie clip and Celtic fans were signing it before it was in the hit parade, the pathe news used to be on youtube that was a few years ago. I don't think it matters as both do it justice. but to your answer celtic sang it first then it became a charts hit then liverpool sang it. but as celtic have a number of better anthems " Grand Old Team To Play For" to name one and YNWA being Liverpools only song as far as I'm aware then its assumed to be a Liverpool song.

It comes from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. A character sings it to a woman whose husband dies while committing a robbery, appropriately enough.

BTW TheChaser claims that celtic were first to sing YNWA but ignore him, he's feckin dyslexic and getting it mixed up with YMCA.

I've got to admit though that it is an impressive sight at parkhead when the 18,500 diehards sing YMCA.
Especially the night they dress up as the village people. |
