Keown isn't alone though. It's nothing new BBC commentators not knowing the rules. It's rare to find one that's even bothered to read the handball rule, and some of them (mentioning no names Connor McNamara) don't even know that you are offside or not at the moment the ball is played, not at some point after that when it then deflects off a defender playing you onside.

He wasn't just standing there - he had to move or the ball would have hit him, this has affected the keeper. Of course its offside.

asparagus, you can try and twist words all you want, but the reality is that the keeper would easily have saved a tame shot had he not been distracted by Rooney's presence. Anyone who has reffed or played the game at all at an level can see that, and the law agrees.

Report breadnbutter February 16, 2015 9:49 PM GMT
rooney dived cause  tahts what you want from your striker in that situation ,he must exploit it

football has been fcking around  with the offside rule so much that now its clouded ,for me if you are on the pitch you are interfering with play but now standing between ball striker and keeper you are not interfering .

use a vid panel or use technology ,game is too fast for human eye ,seen some shockers in Germany over the w/end

a) It was a bad tackle. CORRECT
b) Rooney had to jump out of the way. CORRECT
c) His momentum was impeded so a penalty. CORRECT
d) Rooney had to fall on the floor. WRONG

What would have been really interesting would be if Rooney had jumped out the way, but landed on his feet and his momentum stopped. IF the referee didnt give a penalty at that point then, there would be no onus on players not to dive.

It could have been a huge development for football in this country if the above scenario with Rooney not diving, and simply hurdling but staying on his feet and the penalty being awarded, had happened.

No doubt Sky etc will smash the living daylights out of the oh so boring word 'controversial'.

Interfering with an opponent
preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or movements or making a gesture or movement which, in the opinion of the referee, deceives or distracts an opponent.
