Remi Garde ready to take on the head coach role at Newcastle United and 'in talks' with Magpies

Newcastle United target Remi Garde wants to embark on a long-term project on Tyneside and emulate the success of Arsene Wenger at St James' Park

Remi Garde is eager to start work as Newcastle United’s new head coach.

The former Arsenal man is on the Magpies’ candidate list for the vacant slot and is believed to be ready to hold advanced talks – according to sources in France.

Indeed French reports have claimed he is London to meet with Newcastle's top brass.

Garde, who left his post at Lyon last term for family reasons, is also thought to have been advised by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger on his future and is keen to start his career in the Premier League.

The 48-year-old – unlike other contenders Christophe Galtier of St Etienne or Thomas Tuchel who is still in a contract with Mainz – is free to start work this season.

Sources in France say that Garde wants to build something at Newcastle IF he gets the chance.

And he has a long-term vision along the lines of his mentor Wenger has developed at Arsenal since arriving in the Premier League in 1996.

United have only held brief talks with Garde, but he has yet to visit Tyneside.

Sources at the club say that United could make more progress after the Southampton game.

Following this market a bit and not sure Garde is nailed on.  Newcastle by all accounts taking their time and an appointment has been suggested to take place after their Southampton match next weekend (as they have a two week break following).  Reputable French sources have said they met Garde on Friday in London, nothing to suggest they aren't meeting a few of their candidates in person over the next week or so before choosing a coach.

Personally would not be backing sub 3.00 given the current information.  Garde obviously in the mix but beyond that its hard to tell where he stands.

Chief football writer at the Daily Mail written an article tonight saying Carver been told to take charge for Southampton.  Probably means Garde isn't dotting the i's and crossing the t's as we speak.

Although who knows, just guessing from the outside.

Pretty clear he is a candidate but very much doubt he is nailed on just yet.

Layers certainly putting up some resistance.

I'd imagine they'll speak to a few this week. Sherwood was smashed in the other day- Garde money is just off the back of press stories rather than breakout news.

It can change and drift quite quickly with these markets and Newcastle will not be rushing given their relative safety.

A lack of funds due to backing Phil Taylor (the w@nker) to win the darts limited me to laying Sherwood for a relatively small amount. I fancied Newcastle to go French from day 1 and Remi Garde looks a logical choice.

Thought the St Etienne coach would have been the fav as he plays the same Pardew boring brand of football Laugh

From SkySports...

It is understood that Garde is one of at least three people Newcastle have spoken to and the club will be speaking to one more candidate within the next 24 hours.

Wonder if that clown Sherwood was one of the three already spoken to, there is really no explanation for the flood of money on that man barring Tim himself trying a PR stunt.  Likely Sherwood, Garde, and strong guess Clement is one other (been mentioned in The Sun and The Telegraph lately).

On paper Garde appears a good option for them (bar one name who is imo the clear standout candidate) but time will tell.

they seemingly contacted tuchel quite early on, but by his price that looks a no go before the summer, which is no good for this market

Well you were quickly on to the standout candidate I was hinting about!

Donny pretty sure the sabbatical talk is nonsense.  I followed that saga with Mainz and what I got out of it was that Tuchel wanted a new challenge.  When Mainz made a huge fuss out of him leaving early I'm guessing he made up the "need a break" from the game to help uphold his reputation somewhat.  Almost positive he has been looking for a job since the summer.

The real question is would he want this job?  My head for the most part says no but I suppose if he's up to a real challenge who knows.  I wouldn't expect any noise with Tuchel because very little comes out from his end and he is technically still under contract and Mainz don't seem to like him at all so its a delicate situation.

Paul Clement shouldn't be underrated.  Almost certain he is one getting a look and reading up on him seems to have a good reputation.  Fits this "head coach" role and should be the cheapest of the bunch.  From his time in France and now Spain guessing he's picked up those languages a bit which would help him with a continental team.
