Former Premier League footballer Clarke Carlisle is fighting for his life after being hit by a lorry.

Carlisle, the former Leeds, Burnley and QPR defender who went on to be chairman of the PFA and also achieved acclaim for his appearance on TV’s Countdown, was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with life threatening injuries.

The incident took place near Bishopthorpe in North Yorkshire at 7.30am on Monday, with the road closed to allow the air ambulance to arrive at the scene. The reason for the accident remains unclear, however a police spokeswoman said they were ‘pursuing all avenues’.

That he suffers from depression, has attempted suicide and that he needs some professional help? Neither are the media. All claiming it was an "accident". Perhaps it was an accident, but the more that his mental health condition is skirted around, the more it will just replicate mental health stigma and make it harder for people like Clarke Carlisle, Gary Speed, Robert Enke, to seek the professional, medical help they need.
Report what do i do now? December 23, 2014 11:32 PM GMT

Walking on the A64 at 7.30 in morning and hit by a lorry, doesn't exactly sound like a usual situation for sure. Sad

Only just noticed that James Wade the top darts player was also a sufferer from severe depression issues also, bi-polar in his case - seems these sportsmen and women are quite prone, but guess similar % in all of us. Difficult to say what would help though, other than the individuals getting the help as said above. Notice that Clarke Carlisle was supposedly out about his depression though, and had been through therapy once, so shows how it may be a long haul thing. They live odd lives sometimes these pro sports players, especially when it ends.
Report cardifffc December 24, 2014 3:09 PM GMT
very sad.......hope he makes a full recovery
Report Clouseau December 24, 2014 7:45 PM GMT
Hope Clarke Carlisle gets through this and, just as importantly, his family and friends.

A lot of crap gets written about depression; people think that because someone gets paid a year's wages a week they shouldn't be prone to it. It doesn't work like that.

The best summary i ever heard was from Stan Collymore who speaks eloquently about the subject. I will try to explain here in simplistic terms:

Thought processes are basically a series of chemical reactions in the nut.
Imagine your brain is spaghetti junction in Birmingham.
Normally, positive thoughts about yourself, travelling down the M6, go straight along the motorway and you feel good about what you have done, having got straight through Birmingham with no hitches... (if you take the toll road you have had a toot of charlie, to boot!)
If you suffer from depression the thoughts get caught up in a traffic jam and don't get through to the other side of town; they get siphoned off and could even end up in places like Wolverhampton or Walsall. That is when you start to feel bad about yourself despite everything.
It is difficult for people on the outside to imagine why you are feeling down but it is still the case; the brain has diverted the positive thought chemicals down the wrong path.

Over simplistic, I know, but true, nonetheless.

I see the usual Liberals are on...

People live and people die...

My family members have indeed given their lives (NEVER AGAIN) so that we are here today and yet people "grieve" over people that they have never met and never given a passing thought to..

How come Stan Collymore is able to be in the media and Ched Evans despite having an appeal has been hounded out of football..

Is it really that black and white.....

I think most sportsmen and women suffer with retirement. Often they don't have the skills to get by in the real world and when once thousands cheered them after a few years no one would notice them in Tescos.

You'd have thought a wealthy trade union like the PFA would be well versed in helping retired players. Maybe they are, maybe Clarke just slipped through the net.

So he has been caught drink driving again, having been convicted and banned in 2011. He realised his pundit career would now be finished and that he had brought shame on himself and family and looked to end it all. I think that's a fair guess at what's occurred.

Good job he didn't kill or injure someone else when he decided he couldn't be bothered paying for a taxi. And he gets a minutes applause, laughable.

To think this man once had friends and family that loved (or at least said they did) him - now they just tolerate him and his nonsense and wait for him to die. Put like that i can see why he spends so much time on here trying to upset people!
