Never mind the last two games non performance..He was woefully inadequate in South Africa too.Living on reputation and rarely delivers in an England shirt...unless you count the two goals he set up for Suarez last night.

He has been a superb player but sadly his legs went about 3 years ago. Up until Christmas this season he was very poor. His fortunes improved after Christmas but only cause he scored an incredible amount of penalties. As anyone with half a brain knows scoring a penno doesnt make you a great player. He can still pick a pass but he is not half the player he once was.

Listen Gerrard has been an absolute machine for a decade. No one could ever match his driving runs and rapier shots into the top corner. He's dragged Liverpool FC on his own for periods of the last decade.

But the stupid English coaches automatically assume just because he's slowed down he can automatically play the defensive midfield role. He isnt a defensive midfielder. He'd almost be better suited playing centre half.

Mr. Eboue, Gerrard has been a legend for Liverpool and one of the best players generally of the Premier League era.

However, he has never ever been a player for England in my opinion.

When he retires, my lasting memories of him in an England shirt will be the goal in Munich, the pass-back against France and the header last night.
Report stridingedge June 20, 2014 9:13 PM BST
in his prime when he was the driving force and could run, we either had lampard/gerrard which blatantly never worked or gerrard was even played on the left.

he was never used as the main thrust of any england team. heard plenty of world class players and managers since say that many foreign sides would have built their sides around him in his pride rather than trying to keep everyone happy.
Report stridingedge June 20, 2014 9:15 PM BST
*prime

he was world class at liverpool for a number of years, you can only bae your opinion on all the players you have watched for your side.

ironically when he has had better players to play with recently he has lost his engine and the spark that made him different.
Report crepello June 20, 2014 9:50 PM BST
He has been a good player but he has NEVER been World Class - he was a passenger in the two England games - no energy at all

Report stridingedge June 20, 2014 9:55 PM BST
i dont think anyone is trying to say he is anything like the player he was 5 years ago, i certainly am not.

i have never seen a player carry a team like he did for years, average sides week after week, head and shoulders above everyone else. he could have played for anyone before the he never won the league card is played.

chelsea or man u would have had him in an instant as well as the top international club sides.

i'd rather judge on what i saw over the years and the respect he had from world class players and managers than anyone on here tbh

Report Can't Catch Me June 20, 2014 10:06 PM BST
Yes agree mate, think he has looked way short of his best (just like every England player!). I think its a mistake to ask him to sit alongside Gerrard, rather than ahead of him. His pressing is one of his best attributes and he helps us win the ball back higher up the pitch and that also gives Gerrard a bit more room and time. He hasnt been able to do any of that so far, and I blame the Manager.

You would think its impossible to turn just about all of these players from decent to average, but Roy has managed it yet again. I know they arent world beaters, but they definitely arent this bad.

Gerrard has been world class the last 5 years helping Liverpool fight out 5/6/7th bar last season when they got lucky big time.
He's living on a couple of games FA cup final v West Ham anoynomus til Ashton went off injured and the CL final where if anyone believes Alonso wasn't carrying that team your more deluded than Stevie.
Good luck.
Report stridingedge June 20, 2014 10:13 PM BST
i totally agree with that mate

he is a work horse that will give absolutely everything for the cause.

i watched the italy game and he was often not even picking up anyone but dropped off so deep waiting for them to come on to him, meanwhile pirlo was strolling around with the freedom of the pitch AGAIN. and again yesterday too deep not involved enough.

as you say some can say we are just hopeless every generation but the manager has to take some stick because there's no way those players are reproducing club form, the national side doesn't even play the same  tempo as they are used to. madness.

Mr Eboue is absolutely spot on with everything he said.

Top class player but is finished at the top level, he should do the right thing and retire from international football.
Report Can't Catch Me June 20, 2014 10:19 PM BST
Everton, Liverpool and Southampton play the best football in the league pretty much. Thats 7 of the 10 outfield players covered there... and nearly the whole side when you consider Barley, Lallana and Lambert are the 3 subs likely to be used.

Even if they arent up to this level, at least we should have a fluid, attractive style designed to get the best out of the players and akin to what they produce every week.

Nobody can convince me the manager shouldnt take most of the blame. His whole career has been average... playing dull football. And for those who keep saying its been the same under previous Managers, I would agree. They were crap as well.

The likes of Rodgers or Martinez could improve us significantly imo.
Report Can't Catch Me June 20, 2014 10:21 PM BST

World Cup 2014: Capello did not believe in me - Steven Gerrard
By Phil McNulty Chief football writer in Miami

England captain Steven Gerrard claims former manager Fabio Capello never believed in him to lead the side.

England v Honduras: Gerrard says Hodgson's men won't hold back

But the Liverpool midfielder says that current boss Roy Hodgson has total faith in him.

Gerrard was England captain under Capello during the dismal World Cup campaign in 2010.

"Capello didn't believe in me as his number one captain, but Roy does," he said.

Gerrard took over the armband under Capello almost by default in South Africa but felt the Italian was not convinced by his credentials.

Capello's captain, Rio Ferdinand, was injured in England's first training session and John Terry was overlooked after being stripped of the armband previously, leaving Gerrard to step in.
England's World Cup journey

7 June: v Honduras, Miami, USA

14 June: v Italy, World Cup, Manaus

19 June: v Uruguay, World Cup, Sao Paulo

24 June: v Costa Rica, World Cup, Belo Horizonte

Speaking about Capello's lack of belief, he said: "I don't know what it was. I think he believed in me as a player and rated me as a player.

"It was totally up to him but for me, now, I know I'm Roy's number one captain and that's a big confidence boost for me."

Gerrard, who is expected to be back to lead the side against Honduras in Miami's Sun Life Stadium on Saturday (2145 BST), added of Capello: "Our relationship was totally fine and I enjoyed working under him but, at the time, we had Rio Ferdinand here and maybe John Terry as well.

"Maybe he thought they were going to offer something different from me or they were his preferred choices."

Gerrard said he would still have acted as a figure of authority even without the captaincy, given his experience and the fact that he has led Liverpool with distinction for so many years.

"I'd have still have put an arm around the shoulder of the young players," said Gerrard.

"Just because I'm the captain with the armband on, I still want the likes of Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney and Phil Jagielka to still be leaders in there with me and back me up and we all do it together.

"I'd rather be captain than vice-captain that's for sure."

-----------------------

Capello was right on the money with stevie g.  I was right to back terry for captain back in  2010 because he was cleared of all charges in a court of law.  It will be interesting to see how he gets on with russia in this campaign.

Report Can't Catch Me June 20, 2014 10:30 PM BST
Im not arguing with that! Of course he is past his best. With all due respect, thats staing the obvious.t

But he isnt 'finished at the top level' as this season proved without any doubt. I've been one of his biggest critics the past 3 or 4 years and I felt he was one of our biggest problems at Liverpool. The season just gone proved I was wrong. He was excellent and BR got the best out of him. He was key to us doing so well imo.

And as we havent conversed on here before, you wont know that I have had stick off plenty of my own fans for constantly criticising him the past few years and suggesting he shouldnt be playing every game.

But the way he played last season, consistently, proved me wrong. Obviously we fashioned a new role to counteract his ageing legs. But it worked.

Absolutely drop Gerrard for the last game, I'm his biggest fan but England need to ditch all the oldies and start fresh, hopefully he will retire after the World Cup and Liverpool will squeeze a couple more decent seasons out of him.

Shaw should start instead of Baines, I'd have a midfield trio of Hendo,Barkley,Wilshere with Sterling Lallana and Sturridge as a front 3, shame nobody there to really take GJ's place because he needs to go too!

I was talking about Gerrard well before the world cup started and knew he was England's main liability, anyone that watched Liverpool last season will have noticed Gerrards total lack of pace these days and he only got away with it because of the pace around him from Sterling, Sturridge and Suarez, his best days are long gone I am afraid and its baffling Hodgson didn't see it and like many managers before persisted with the same out of form or not good enough players like Rooney, Gerrard and Welbeck.
