the standings would be:

holland 6pts 10-1 goal difference
chile 3pts 3-3
spain 3pts 3-5

holland would be through unless they lost 5-0. they could lose 2-0 against chile and still would win the group unless spain beat australia 9-0 or better. you really think they wont rest half the team??

If Spain win 2-0 against Chile, there'll only be 2 in it goal-difference wise. Spain only need to beat Australia by 2 more goals than the margin by which Chile 'beat' the Netherlands.

Who are these people that write teams off after a slow start to a tournament? An unimpressive start to a tournament is de rigeur for any side that has serious aspirations of winning it. Just ask Spain 2010 (lost 1-0 to Switzerland first up), Italy 2006 (drew with USA 1-1 after a win against Ghana), Brazil 2006 (needed a last minute penalty to beat Turkey), Italy 1982 (drew with Poland, Peru and Cameroon and didn't win a game until their 4th match).

Italia 90 - Argentina lost to Cameroon but went all the way to the final.

94 - Italy lost to Ireland but went all the way to the final.

massive difference between 'starting slowly' and getting hammered 5-1 and it could easily have been 8 or 9-1
