Difficult to pin down I know, as there's so many.
Mine is a toss-up of three.

Watching argentine games at 11pm with all the ticker tape, we'd just bought a new colour tv...
the Germany Austria scandal when they stopped Algeria progressing by fixing their game.
the maradona goal v England..no I mean the good one...

loads to choose from though
was too young to remember brazil in all their glory, but ive enjoyed Holland total football, Romania with hagi, the zaire player who ran out and belted a brazil free kick right up the field, the dutch long-range shooting in argentina, scots' being humiliated, gemmill goal v Holland, Colombian who was killed for an own gaol etc.

As you say, so many to choose from.
The goal by Carlos Alberto in the 1970 final to make it 4-2.
Bryan Robson scoring against France within 30 seconds in 1982
Lineker's header going just wide against Argentina in 1986 in the last minute which would have got us into extra time.
South Korea getting through to the semi final in 2002 after beating Italy and Spain, both with the help of the referee!

Lechkov dumping Germany out of USA 94,
Mexico 86 and the Maradona show....no one player has made a WC theirs like Maradona in 86....you could have taken Pele out of all those Brazilian teams and they would have still won the WC. Take Maradona from the Argentine team of 86 and I doubt they would have even made it out of the group stage.
The Brazilinn team of 82....probably the best team not to win a WC (bar perhaps Hungary in 54).

Higuita losing his marbles in 90.....Voller and Rijkaard getting on so well that same year.

We do tend to get shown the same clips every World Cup..so i saw one recently that doesn't get shown so often.

Eder's winner for Brazil against Russia in 1982.

It is poetry in motion.
Socrates' casual dummy then the double flick and volley all in one move....

And the keeper - who was rated the best in the world at the time - doesn't even feckin move Laugh

Just out of this world Happy

the 82 world cup must be the best ever surely, hungary`s destruction of el Salvador, france vs Germany, brazil vs Italy, robson scoring after 30 secs, kuwaiti official taking his team off,n.ireland beating spain, eder, zico, falcao and Socrates, shumachers assault on battiston, tardelli`s mental goal celebration and argentina being taken to school by brazil with maradona making a t*t of himself,it transfixed me a young ladHappy

arg was my first world cup
it was all welsh rugby and scottish football for me in the 70s
But the old man would no let me stay up to watch the dutch game

Me and my bro were in tears when Scotland lost to Peru
we aren't even scottish
the old man was pi55ing himself with laughter the old goat

Not a big fan of coleman
but his quote when gemmill scored to put the Scots 3-1 up
something like
'the tough gritty professional has put Scotland into dreamland'
spine tingling stuff

Brazil beating Russia 2-0 in 82 with wonder goals from Socrates & Eder.

Unlike today , we did not know and see world superstars of football constantly on tv , so had never seen these magicians.

that's it. it's not a bad thing, the access we have these days (imagine punting without having the internet) but it was like watching the Champions League, seeing all these guys you'd only read about. and it made them that much more intimidating when England played them, as it isn't like now, where we see the likes of Suarez every week. not that I'm saying the Italians and Uruguay's won't still be excellent villans in a weeks time

Most memorable was maradona's second v England in 86 as it was the first World Cup I can remember and it was the goal I've always dreamed of scoring.

Other highlights include

Lothar Matthaus in 1990.  Complete midfielder and stereotypical German captain.

Commentary from Brian Moore and Barry Davies.

Brilliant BBC World Cup theme tunes in 86 and 90.

Cameroon kicking lumps out of canigga in 1990.  "There was some contact" Laugh

1974 WC Being there and soaking up the atmosphere and seeing Scotland go undefeated.
1966 North Korea v Portugal To see NK go 3-0 up after 22 mins was incredible. Then Eusebio took over.
1970 The final and the wonderful football Brazil played.

Being totally skint, I think in 2002, having put a few doubles and accumulator, the bet cost me I believe about £1.50, on the four quarter finals to be won by a specified team on penalties.

After three quarter finals I'd got one up, this meant if England lost on penalties I got about £60 and if they didn't i got nothing. The match ended in a draw after full time and extra time so it went to penalties; England took the penalties and lost and i cheered their opponents on all the way, well if England had won i'd have had two quid to live on for the rest of the week.
Report ian merseyside June 11, 2014 1:54 PM BST
Reading the post below has reminded me of a similar bet I placed in 1986.  I bet 4 singles, 3 doubles, 2 trebles and 1 fourfold on each of the quarter finals being draws.  I had won the bet anyway as 3 of them did end up as draws.  When I went to collect the winnings I was pleasantly surprised to find that the bookies (probably Ladbrokes I think) had paid out on all 4 as draws.  The England Argentina match finished 1-2 but they had paid out on a 1-1 as a goodwill gesture because of Maradona's controversial goal!  Happy days.

What is noticeable is how much more memorable the commentators were....back in the day.

Once you get to 2002 ..there's no Coleman,Barry Davies etc..

There's not one iconic commentator's line after that.

i used to record match of the day on a big old style tape recorder(as a few have said coleman davis etc were different class)i'd have the mic up against the tv and every now and then on the recording you'd hear my mother shout at my dad',dont drown that gin with the tonic',didn't have that same ring to it as 'they think its all over'
