Well it def can but for the life of me I can't think why this is 100's and will surely be shorter at the start and during the comp! James Rodriguez (Colombia) to be top player (golden ball) is 100's with laddys and betfair sportsbook and compared to the prices of some others, 100's is a stonking price. He is young and talked of as the best ever Col player (by the previous 'best ever'), is an attacking midfield playmaker that scores spectacular goals (free kicks as well which get noticed) and should get the chance to shine early as Col group is pretty poor. He's happy for others to be in the limelight (which goes down well) and has had a good couple of seasons with more than a few saying he has been the best player in the French league this year to follow his good last season at Porto (sold for €45m). He does have a habit of going awol from time to time app but as stated the group stages should give him the chance to strut his stuff and i can see his price dropping fast and being able to get out the bet early on if that is your thing. When you see the price of some much less than him the 100 looks very appealing and the only reason he is this price is because of the leagues he has played in and that he is a relative unknown. The thread title is tongue in cheek but nevertheless it is a cracking bet, that should be able to be laid off early and presuming the rest of the Col team turn up this time should be a good ride through the comp - unless somebody wants to tell me why not that is.........
Wouldn't say he carried them past Netherlands to be honest. He has been pretty anonymous in the knockout stages and scored 4 goals in what most people would have said was the easiest group before the tourney started. Hasn't really bossed a single game.

All I'll say is that if messi won it with his performances over the last 3 matches (esp final) then it would have taken a hell of a performance to have been 'better' than him! I know i said earlier in this situation he'd deserve it but that was before the matches! Am i right in that James wasn't even in the stadium? If so i presume he had the nod not to bother being there!

The warning signs were there as ssoon as the rules were changed with the journos having no so and it being kept in house for fifa delegates to decide....it was messi's come what may from that moment on.

I did have a feeling he mightn't as read something last night that said only 1 bronze winner had come from 1/4's but then reasoned he'd get at least the bronze! Like i said fact James wasn't in Rio spoke volumes - could have done with knowing that pre match!!

Can someone please tell me IN ENGLISH PLEASE just what the fcuk is going on?
James Rodriguez scores 6 goals so that clearly means in my skull that he wins The Golden Boot (670 on here if I recall) when his nearest rival hit only 5 goals and as far as other markets are concerned, he's also leading goalscorer (1000 on here as well) so WTF is the Golden Ball and how the fcuk has he contrived to losing that?
What's going on?
A straight answer would be greatly appreciated and I'm sure I'm not alone with that question
I've just got back from the boozer and I was really chuffed for Spyker that Muller & Messi didn't score...I celebrated with another pint!
Now I think I'll be drowning the sorrows by proxy with another few!

NGU - so Rodriguez wins The Golden BOOT (670 on here) and he also tops the TOP GOALSCORER market as well (1000 on here) but all the frenzy in this thread is about the Golden BALLbag?
What price was he for that?
AND I sincerely hope that Spyker has emptied his balls on the proper markets and not been held to ransom by those crooked & corrupt fcukers at FIFA...that'd be madness!
This needs clarification!

What is going on gibberish with all due respect to spyker is that he made an inspired call from left field aabout Rodriguez and both he and Colombia surprised many people in the group stages by how well they played. Then the problems start. They beat a Suarez less Uruguay who we now know came from a poor group with him scoring a tremendous goal. It was all set up for him to then go on and make the tournament his. At the time the fact that his team lost to Brazil and he was pretty ineffectual didn't seem to hole him below the water line. What we has subsequently been made clear is that the group stages wasn't an aberration in that Brazil really were poor.
So why should Rodriguez continue to get the benefit of the doubt? Soemone else made a point that in the biggest games he seems to go missing. That may have been the case versus Brazil and it may have counted against him.

EO - I reiterate...what the fcuk is the Golden BALLBAG?
Two of the OBVIOUS markets (top goalscorer & golden boot) he wins clearly so what's going on? I'm very confused

Golden Boot = top scorer (for which Rodriguez, who won with 6 goals, wasn't even on the list of prices that went up to 150/1. In fact, he wasn't even favourite to be Colombia's top scorer at 5/1 3rd fav).

Thanks Joe - I was telling a few guys in the boozer about this thread and even they were hoping Muller or Messi weren't going to score.
I hope Spyker has used his noggin by backing Rodriguez in the two meaningful markets because 670 & 1000 can't be sniffed at! He should've filled his boots!

Won about a grand on the boot I think but in all honesty that was only speculative as he couldn't seriously be backed to win that as his goal scoring record pre wc wasn't of the ilk to think he had much of a chance. I thought 3/4 goals and good attacking performances was likely so yes it's been a decent wc for me but not as good as it could have been. Eternal with all due respect do you honestly think any of that made much difference? First of all he was kicked off the pitch the first half with at least 4 yellow card offences against him (none given) yet came back to be influential in the second and secondly it was a different Brazil team and i presume you are saying Brazil with neyamr would have been beaten 7-1 by germany? I don't think the tech cmte look at individual games and if james had scored a second, then Col beaten brazil and then germany i don't think he would have won if against messi in the final. I knew the vagaries of the bet and as stated early i thought the bet would die after the 1/4s if knocked out. I also said that messi had a head start with FIFA - though I didn't realise how big that head start was! On their own ratings he's 11th overall, 5th in the forwards and nowhere near the team yet he's clearly the best player? Chuck in the mixed (at best) performances of the ko stages and the abject performance in the final and it is hard to justify him as clearly 1st and James as nowhere! No sour grapes from me but i do wander what performance was needed to beat messi and why the change from Journos and tech cmte to just cmte so late? He clearly wasn't in anyway bothered about receiving it so if they gave it to him as compensation then why bother? James wouldn't have won anyway even if had been Journos and not just those in the FIFA bubble but he might have got recognised by 2nd or 3rd. If i was a Muller backer I'd be livid atm!

Oh and mean to add that the £50 bet with ladbrokes was a 'free' bet anyway as opened the account purely for this bet so got the opening offer promo. I'll find something decent to stick that on and see where it leads me........

Morning Spyker. As I mentioned just before the result, I WAS a Muller backer. I was laying Hamez in the 3s during the game so Muller became my biggest green. Won a bit on Messi but still pissed off. Btw, I was still rooting for Rodriguez. I do agree with what EO says for the most part - not something I've typed before!
He was a much better winner for me in the top scorer market than this one anyway!

Morning Mik - i do take on board about the Brazil game - but even though it was james' worst game he was prob as good in that overall as messi was in any of his mom games! I wouldn't be moaning at all if Muller had won - or Robben for that matter - but it does leave a nsaty taste in the mouth messi winning. Nevermind, ok profit made overall - the bet gave me value for money and prob meant i didn't so any silly last minute bets during the comp so might have saved me some! I've single handedly discovered an absolute unknown and it is all thanks to me that James will now be the next darling of the football world - for a few months anyway!

absoltute shocker that messi won this.fifa just look bigger and bigger c**** every day.would love to know how much they are on after in brown envelopes.
Eeternal - are you saying that Messi has been awesome since the group games then? Rodriguez has been the best player by a country mile in this tournament even if he has played less games. Even Messi looked embarrassed when it was announced.
The decision to give it to Messi sums FIFA up for what they really are - a disgrace. How the hell Rodriguez was not even in the top 3 is a complete farce.
If it was a proper fair vote spyker you would have won, and that's a cert.

Messi clearly wasn't the best player in the tournament so shouldn't have been awarded golden ball. I wouldn't like to infer and sort of corruption or finacial influence, but I find it interesting that the award is sponsored by adidas, and was awarded to the headline player in all the adidas adverts, playing for a country sponsored by adidas.
Marychain probably got it spot in there....

James is sponsored by Addidas as well though - i dunno if it's corruption, defferance to messi or incompetence that he got it but i think what is clear is that james was never going to win it after going out in the 1/4s to which many say fair do's and is how i structured my escape plan. But here's 1 for you - what if Col had got past Brazil with james' 2nd half performance but been spanked by the Germans with James putting in a decent show - would he have had a chance then? I'm not so sure with the way things have turned out - either way no one really cares apart from us now!

I think it is difficult for a springer to come from nowhere to win and there is an in built advantage for players like Messi, Neymar and Ronaldo in that they are already perceived as the best and have credit in the bank. But let's turn that around and look at Rodriguez. He wa the guy who flew under the radar and it is a whole lot easier for someone like that to thrive until the other teams work out that they need to stop them. Early on he was largely allowed time and space and looked very impressive.
Like you say he was targeted once he came up against Brazil with their better destructive players making it difficult for his team mates to get the ball to him and then closing him down quickly and not allowing him space. Welcome to the world of those three players I listed above. Using Messi as an example, every time he got the ball he would have two or three men round him like flies on shiit. That will have had some bearing on the award because to have the kind of marking he was subjected to and still be able to influence games to his teams advantage shows his ability. Let's see if Rodriguez now continues to thrive if he comes to be seen as that standard of player with the resultant attention from other players.

Largely same answer as given to spyker. No I'm not suggesting Messi has been awesome. Defensive players and defensive structures are so good these days that at the very top level it is incredibly difficult for creative players. I'm just saying that as the tournament went on Messi was better able to influence games under far more scrutiny than Rodriguez. Teams are set up to stop the top players playing. Like I said Rodriguez may now have to deal with that reality.

World Cup 2014: Lionel Messi Golden Ball surprised Sepp Blatter
Fifa president Sepp Blatter was "surprised" Argentina's Lionel Messi won the World Cup Golden Ball award.
Barcelona forward Messi, 27, was named as the tournament's best player after his side lost 1-0 to Germany in Sunday's final in Rio de Janeiro.
Blatter said: "I was a little bit surprised when I saw Messi coming up to collect the best player of the competition."
Argentina legend Diego Maradona called the decision "unfair". Play media Jump media player Media player help Out of media player. Press enter to return or tab to continue.
All the goals from World Cup 2014
The 53-year-old, who was named the best player when Argentina won the World Cup in 1986, said "marketing people" had chosen the wrong man.
Speaking on his television programme, De Zurda, Maradona said Colombia playmaker James Rodriguez should have received the award.
The Golden Ball and other individual prizes, such as the Golden Glove award for the best goalkeeper, are decided by world governing body Fifa's Technical Study Group, a panel including former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier.
Blatter believes Messi was given the award on the strength of his four goals during the group stage.
"If you compare the beginning of the tournament and why the Argentina team got into the final, they were decisive," he said. What is Fifa's Technical Study Group?
The Golden Ball and other individual awards are chosen by Fifa's Technical Study Group, a 13-strong committee which analyses matches at international tournaments.
The group was set up after the 1966 World Cup to monitor trends and developments in the game.
Current members include former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier and ex-Hibernian boss Mixu Paatelainen.
Former Nigeria midfielder Sunday Oliseh and Ricki Herbert, who managed New Zealand at the 2010 World Cup, are also on the committee, which has no British representative.
Roy Hodgson was due to be invited into the Technical Study Group before he was appointed England manager.
Messi set up his side's winner against Switzerland in the last 16 but was only a sporadic threat in the semi-final against Netherlands, which Argentina won on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
He then missed a clear chance in the final, when put through on goal by Lucas Biglia. Play media Jump media player Media player help Out of media player. Press enter to return or tab to continue.
Highlights: Germany 1-0 Argentina
Messi told Spanish newspaper AS: "Right now I don't care about the prize. I wanted to take Argentina to the World Cup for all the people."
Rodriguez finished as the competition's top scorer, with six goals from five games as Colombia reached the quarter-finals, where they lost to hosts Brazil.
Fifa's Technical Study Group awarded the Silver Ball - for the tournament's second-best player - to Germany forward Thomas Muller, with Netherlands attacker Arjen Robben winning the Bronze Ball.
Germany's Manuel Neuer collected the Golden Glove, while France midfielder Paul Pogba was named the tournament's best young player.

This was a great call - very unlucky with the corrupt decision to give Messi it. Wasn't even in the top 3 players let alone the best. James should have got the golden ball no doubt.
