Mourinho called it months ago ,massive help with them not being good enough to play in Europe ,even on a Thursday night like Spurs.

Eden Hazard was injured in the last european match ,it was maybe a 7-12 point start for them and they have managed to sneak it on the back of failure last season ,failure in our cup competitions this season and a concentration on the League. Always an achievement to win it ,but this one was an abnormality.

or maybe Liverpool will win it again and prove that playing less games (up to 14 less in some cases) in other competitions did not hugely aid their success? I am sure this thread will be recycled as the season goes on Wink

What happens if Man Utd finish above Liverpool next season? are Utd not going to be in the Europa League then?  Here is a little prediction if? Utd have the same scenario as Liverpool this season, they will finish in a higher place in the league than Liverpool and Chelsea and City certainly will .

Liverpool will do well to finish 4th next season given the same schedule as the other top teams.

just strange in over 2 decades of the premier league this has never hugely aided a team that has not qualified for the champs league that season.

the league is won season after season by those that have competed in the champs league that season but now all of a sudden the huge advantage of no europe is massively over shadowing the obvious disadvantage of having a weaker squad and struggling to attract a lot of players you wanted because of no champs league over the past few seasons and seeing these players go to the sides that are now making excuses!

nothing to do with a good brand of football and a bright young manager with a clear vision of what he wants and how to go about getting it.

one final time yes its been an advantage for freshness but over a season freshness is nothing without quality

you can seethe away all summer now for all i care, IF liverpool win the league the fans will be rightly celebrating an unbelievable achievement from players and manager whilst you continue to squirm and justify this outrage Wink

I think you'll find those losses came about through paying off previous managers (Dalglish & Hodgson), no CL football, & an excessively high wage bill considering the lack of achievement we'd encountered over the previous years. All three of those problems have no been addressed. Add to that some lucrative sponsorship deals brought in over the past 12-18 months, with quite a few more to come. Hopefully the extension work on Anfield will start shortly, which will eventually bring in an extra 10,000 people every home game. I'm confident you'll see a much healthier set of figures when our next set of accounts are shown. The FFP rules won't be a problem for us. Lets see how other clubs fare.

Regardless of the reasons for it and what may or may not happen in future it is a fact that Liverpool have made big losses for several years and therefore have been doing some "excessive spending" of their own.

I actually don't have an issue with that because clubs should be able to run their businesses as they see fit imo but let's not just ignore the fact that Liverpool has been running at losses to rival Chelsea and City over the past few years regardless of net spend. When ourselves and City came along and started winning titles the majority of whining about that success not being "real" came from Liverpool and Arsenal fans. I presume winning the title, if it happens, won't feel any less "real" to Liverpool fans this time even if they've done so operating at big losses for several years?

Btw I agree that Rodgers has shown himself to be a very good manager. That's what happens when you come up through the Chelsea bootroom I guess Wink

I think if liverpool go on to win the league with their wafer thin squad it will be the greatest achievement in PL history. To compete against the massive squads of the clubs in the CL has rarely been done before hence pretty much the same clubs being in it year in year out. This illustrates the massive resource advantage they have. Isn't Citeh the highest paid squad in world sport?

Perhaps IF they do win the Premier League then it will nail the lie that you have to make massive squad rotations every week...

We all know that the Managers of bigger Clubs have to keep a larger pool of talented players happy and their agents demand that their players get games...

Liverpool as a Club with the door to the Trophy Cabinet having needed a new hinge for years, and no-one in the City qualified to undertake such an arduous task have had an advantage it must be said...

However will Tom Daley still be available next year as forwards coach and will the Premier League referees have caught up on their MOTD tapes over the Summer recess...

We can only hope that some of the shocking scenes from this year are not repeated but I have heard that already, even in April 751 Children have already been born this year in the Liverpool Women's Maternity Unit and been Christened Penalty...

Liverpool will target big signings in summer - Ian Ayre

Liverpool will hand manager Brendan Rodgers a significant summer transfer kitty as the club seek to build on qualification for the Champions League.
The Reds, favourites to win Premier League, believe Europe's elite competition will help them attract top talent and are willing to pay for it.
"It will cost what it costs when we decide who the manager wants to buy," said managing director Ian Ayre.

We always expected that the squad we need for next season will be very different to the squad for this year

Liverpool have benefited from not playing in Europe this season.

Yes - and here is the crux for the more dim-witted - Liverpool being in Europe hasn't made the other teams lose and they still have to win their games. Nobody is denying it hasn't helped but it isn't the deciding factor - if it was it would have happened far far more often and it would be mentioned at the start of every season - but it isn't is it? Scoty - all squads are the same size - 25 unless club decided otherwise - apart from young unrpoven players ('homegrowners' i believe is the phrase) that Liverpool have in the squad out of necessity and have barely used them, but you must have known that it's so obvious!

Everyone agrees it was a big benefit and was probably crucial to their performance, Liverpool players past and present, managers and fans.

The only debate is ,does it devalue it?

For me it does and makes it a freak result ,next season will tell us if it was or not, when we have an even playing field and Liverpool have no advantage in terms of rest and preperation .

Come the end of next season I expect most will be saying that it was a freak event aided by circumstances.

How appropriate it will be on Sunday that Liverpool will play a team who are in the semi finals of the biggest prize in European club football and one who will be resting players because they are competing in Europe, when a win for a full strength and well prepared Chelsea team could still enable Chelsea or Man City to win the league.

We must not discount the fact that they seem to be getting the most of the alleged "rub of the green" and in the "25 years since Hillsboro" that is rammed down our throats at every opportunity.

Spyker I'd say there has always been an edge from our side for Liverpool games but one I'd generally put down to you lot being the team to beat at the time. There was the odd incident that raised the temperature on our side i.e. the Saunders tackle that finished Paul Elliott's career and the Fowler nonsense with Le Saux but that wasn't long lasting. I remember beating you 4-0 just before Christmas in the early 2000's and the songs were mostly of the "you nicked my stereo" and feed the scousers" variety and certainly not the "murderers" sort of stuff that took hold later.

I don't think there was any one factor that led to the intensity of the rivalry increasing. I just think it was an inevitable consequence of coming up against each other in so many big games in a short space of time. By the same degree I've heard some of our younger fans say they hate Barca more than Tottenham which I find ridiculous but again that's come out of the number of big games we played against them in the space of a few years.

In all honesty my memory of longer-term London rivals is more against spuds - but maybe that's because at that time (70/80's) they were winning things and, being from the south, lots of people supported them then.
I really don't know whether even now liverpool fans really pay much attention to Chelsea (more than other teams by looking for results of teams you want to lose!) - it's not as if we haven't had anything to focus on ourselves the last 20 years (not being very good for big chunks!) so other teams don't come into it. At least that's my point of view.

The other thing I'd say played a part from the Liverpool side was Gerrard being on the verge of joining us. It wasn't as if a player like him was ever going to go from you to United and I think that stirred up a fair bit of antagonism towards us.

As I said on another thread yesterday there was a noticeable change of attitude from Liverpool to us. We went from getting the odd version of "Stamford Bridge is falling down" to virtually the whole ground telling us we had no history. Coming out of that away end has been a bit more lively than it used to be as well just recently.

That's not taking away from the leading part that Liverpool hooligans played and anyone that knows anything about (uk/European) football hooliganism in the 80's can back it up. At that time Chelsea 'headhunters' were more notorious than others 9rightly or wrongly) and got mentioned in the same way Milwall fans do now - didn't last long though! Liverpool winning the league this season after where they've been
the last few seasons AND spending a fraction of the oil clubs WHILST playing
the best football would be the greatest achievement in English football for as
long as I can remember.

It would be a truly staggering achievement in this day and age.

The fact that the FA are allowing Chelsea to pick a 'light' team without any sanctions....means that infact they are giving the weakest title known to man to liverpool.

They should do what Riddick Bowe did back in the 90's, and put that title in a trashcan so liverpool can degrade themselves by dipping it out of the bin.

I suppose that must set you apart from Utd fans. They didn't have the decency to apologise for fielding weakened sides all season, knowing they were put all their efforts in winning the Community shield.

When you buy the Rothmans Football Yearbook in years to come there will be a blank chapter where 2013/2014 should have appeared..

It will simply state in LARGE BLACK TYPE...

"This was a year to forget. The Cheats took over but the referees have been on a course and will never again be taken in by what has happened.Simply passing the ball upfront for any player in a Red Shirt to fall over will be banned"...

Teeth will be cleaned and taken out and we will return to normal...

Nobody said they had the bottle to win it,just that IF they had it would have been devalued ,but they will now fall just short even with everything in heir favour .

Although many on here said they were by FAR the best team ,well the best team usually wins it Wink and to bottle it against a weakened team concentrating on Europe shows they just are not good enough .

What a kid making his debut a centre back?

No JT no Cech no Cahill saved for a bigger match no Hazard injured in Europe Liverpool not good enough if they would have won it ,it would have been devalued for the reasons they have bottled it. Not good enough despite every advantage.
Report dizzydavid1 April 27, 2014 6:36 PM BST
Hmmm, I don't see any mention of the word "IF" in your thread title, nor any "IFS" in your opening posts either. I did find this in your first or second post though... "always an achievement to win it ,but this one was an abnormality." Sounds decidedly non "IF" to me.

Anyway, so far this season I've read threads on here declaring the title as all but over and in City's hands, Chelsea's hands and then Liverpool's hands. Pretty sure one of those 3 teams will win it, all in good time though, every season posters on here call it too early, seeming to forget that "twists and turns" are actually fairly common in football.

You make it sound like they threw a 16 year old in. He's played for Chelsea before, he spent 2 years playing in the Eredivisie and he's a full international.

Today just proved the point that has been made to you on this thread over the past week, which for some reason you seem to ignore. Chelsea (like City) have 2 top players for each position. They don't have a 'weak' team.
Report A.H HUNTER esq. April 27, 2014 6:41 PM BST
No you saw "Liverpool win a devalued" league the fact they have bottled it proves that it would have been devalued . All that in their favour and they cant beat a team concentrating on europe and with a kid making his debut.

Not good enough despite all the advantages and proven today.
Report dizzydavid1 April 27, 2014 6:49 PM BST
