Haven't seen much of Charlton recently, but that cup performance at Sheff Utd was borderline embarrassing. Played off the park and barely created a chance until they went 2 down.

Great. We'll have more bizarre soundbites from Soloman Campbell now CryCry

This is b0llocks, I am fuming.

Yes Charlton played bad on Sunday and are bottom of the league by put that really isn't telling the full story. They have been plying much better recently and have 4 games in hand over their rivals.

Totally bizarre decision towards someone who has been such a magnificent servant to the club. And he is being replaced by the AC Milan youth coach ffs.

The Belgian nob wants shooting. He's gonna destroy Charlton if he's allowed to continue.

"They have been plying much better recently"

I must've missed this. 1 league win since boxing day, no away wins since November, lowest scorers in the entire 4 divisions. On countless occasions this season, the football has been absolutely dire and Sunday was our worst performance in months.

Powell is a good man and a club legend but perhaps it was time for a change. I certainly don't think the new man can do much worse and i'd hope he at least tries to play players in their proper positions.

Fair enough Biscuit, I'm going by what my brother told me. He's a season ticket holder down there. As am I actually, I just never go as I'm not really interested anymore.

No surprise it's an ex Liege Belgian manager who's been brought in.
Report Biscuit1979 March 11, 2014 12:40 PM GMT
I thought you were an Arsenal fan?

I'm 50-50 on his sacking to be honest. Powell is a good man, a club legend and got us promoted and ha shad to put up with the new owner selling a couple of our better players so you could say it's harsh that he's gone.

But on the other hand, some of his tactics are very questionable, our form is dire, we hardly ever score any goals and we're bottom of the league below even Yeovil so it's not really a surprise that a bloke who's just spent millions buying us, feels the need to act.

Our new owner did exactly the same at Standard Liege last year, got rid of a popular manager, employed an unknown and the fans weren't happy. A year later, Liege are walking the Belgian league and selling out every home game.

I personally don't think the new bloke can do much worse than Powell was.

I lived 2 streets from Highbury until I was 10, so Arsenal are my first love, so to speak.

I then moved to Charlton and have lived in the area ever since. All my mates used to go to Charlton, so I followed suit naturally. When I first started going, our main striker was Pardew with John Robinson on the wing. Robinson was always my favourite player.

It was a great time down there until Curbs left. After that it went to pot and the club was run a shambles by people who didn't care for it much. Kept my ticket in the hope that one day, we might actually have someone in charge who cares about results as much as money.

And frankly, this and the thought of being a feeder club for a Belgian side has just about finished all hope I had left off.
Report hippie March 11, 2014 1:07 PM GMT
Liege aren't walking the Belgian League. Anderlecht's pisspoor form and the way the league is set up has put them in pole position but it wouldn't be a massive shock to see Club Brugge overhaul them.

The new bloke can't do much worse than Powell but it's hard to see how he can do any better. A mid-table team was dismantled and non-firing strikers were brought in. The fact that the Valley becomes waterlogged if you spill a cup of water on it didn't help Powell's cause either.

If the owner is looking for a "new manager bounce"  he should have waited until after the Millwall game but it aint a bounce you need, it's a miracle.
Report Biscuit1979 March 11, 2014 1:25 PM GMT
Must admit i thought Liege were further clear than they are, their lead was 10 points a few weeks ago. Even so, a 6 point lead at the top is a world away from the distant 6th they were last season.

The only thing in the new mans favour is that he has 4 games in hand so a couple of wins turns it right round.

Just heard a clip from yesterday between Alan Brazil and Matt Holland. Brazil as ignorant and clueless as ever got the hump when reading that Charlton are potentially a feeder club for standard liege due to owner connections. Apparently he watched them recently in the champions league and reckons Charlton would take them lol Standard have been fantastic this year and sit 6 clear. Old clueless goat

Lets imagine the chap wasn't confused and he really did mean CL. He would have meant when they played Arsenal in 09/10 where they lost 3-2 and 2-0.

Not sure what you can take from that.

I have a friend with a grandson who played for Charlton until the end of last season.

He was a regular in the first team until they were relegated from the champoionship and he hardly got a look in when they played in League 1. They signed a few players coming to the end of their careers who had once been big name strikers.

He assures me that if there was any racism at the club it was not against anyone who is black.

The way the Belgian league is decided is a joke.

This weekend is the last game in the regular season then they split into groups. The points obtained during the regular season will be halved (and rounded up) before the start of the Championship playoff. That will effectively halve Liege's lead over Club Brugge. The top 6 sides then play each other home and away (10 games. In the event of ties at the end of the playoffs, the half point will be deducted if it was added). Liege's advantage over Brugge is not as large as it seems at the moment.

Club Brugge are far from out of this race (because of the ridiculous way the league is set up).
Report Winner_Winner_Chicken_Diner March 12, 2014 4:29 PM GMT
I know how it works hippie but you initially said the way the league is setup has put Standard in pole position. Well that's not true is it, they have played a normal league season to thus point and for most of that been in blistering pace.

It can seem stupid and complicated but it also adds excitement and interest to the league. Teams that are miles away can go close, teams like standard a couple of years ago were shocking until they got a run and scraped into the top 6 and then took it to the last game of the playoffs finishing a close 2nd. So not only are club brugge a danger, any form team from far back are. As a football better, I don't see a reason to hate it, it gives teams lots of extra incentives from the different uefa qualifications groups to even the pre relegation between the bottom two. The loser then gets automically relegated, the winner goes into another group with 2nd, 3rd and 4th from division 2. More games with meaning, its really worth following and understanding as no other league gives you so many options at season end.

I tipped standard to win the league last year as their young team played great fast counter attacking stuff but had room to grow, I have saved the thread for blowing my own trumpet time but yes its far from over.

Actually Roland Duchatelet is trying to sell Standard Liège for a few months now.
He fired Mircea Rednic (Standard's manager) after last season's final game (a 7-0 win against KAA Gent bringing a Europa League qualification).
