Do wah, Pat Crerand was born in Glasgow of Irish parentage. On radio 5 live recently, he himself claimed to have adopted Irish nationality.

Oh, and it's pushing it to put McGrory and Hay etc in the same generation.
While I'm at it, Paul McStay wouldn't qualify as a top five 'tic player of his OWN generation. Vastly overrated.

OK. I believe Kerrygold have a few nice ones. Otherwise, if you don't care, why don't you disappear?

King Kenny in a league of his own, best British player ever, never mind Scottish.
Honorable mentions must go to
Willie Pettigrew Willie Donachie Tommy Callaghan Frank McDougall Andy Ritchie

Baxter was my boyhood hero and whilst he played many of his best games against Celtic, the hoops fans generally forgave him because he saved his very best for England! The better the opposition, the better he played. Dalglish was the last truly great Scottish player.

My first qualifying campaign was Italia 90 when Mo Johnston played in France. He went badly backwards when he came back. One of my mates was in Nantes a few years ago and there was a picture of Mo Jo on a pub wall.
Paul Lambert even though I watched the 1997 Champions League final again recently and it's incredible how your mind plays tricks. I thought he snuffed Zidane out the game. Juve were different class, unbelievable that Dortmund won 3-1. Lambert set up the opener though so he is in for that.

With the possible exception of Dave Mackay, every single one of the players mentioned on this thread could be melted down and fused together and they still wouldn't be as good as Ian Durrant would have been.

In all the games he played against Celtic he only ended up in the losing side twice.

Yes Jed he was already a super player at Bobby Robsons Ipswich and with Eric Gates, and all the rest of that team its hard to see a weakness. Then there the 2 dutch midfielders, such a team!

They were part of the best game of football I have ever seen - Spurs beat them 5-3 the week before Christmas in 1980 and the game was played in a howling gale and tropical downpour.

I think Wark held the scoring record in a UEFA Cup season for quite a while until Klinsmann broke it. That's when it was taken seriously and hard to win.
Some older players my dad still raves about;
Danny McGrain Sandy Jardine Eddie Gray John Robertson Alex Young Bobby Murdoch

I don´t think there´s one Scottish player from the last 20 years that can compare with the classic pool of players Scotland produced from 1960- 1980.
Charlie Nicholas another shocking omission...

Billy Bremner Kenny Dalglish Paul Sturrock Denis Law Danny McGrain
I can't think of anyone more recent than the 80s that anyone outside of Scotland or their own club might have heard of.

There are just so many top class Scottish players from the 70s and 80s to choose from. Every top team had its share of Scots:
Liverpool - Dalglish, Souness, Hansen, Nicol, Hutchison Arsenal - Charlie Nicholas Leeds - Bremner, Lorimer, Gray, McAllister Spurs - Gough, Archibald, Sullivan Ipswich - Wark, Gray Everton - Sharp, Ferguson, Ferguson B Chelsea - Nevin, Burley, Speedie, Durie, Spencer, Clarke Derby - Gemmill, Rioch Man Utd - Law, Jordan, McQueen, Buchan, Morgan, Strachan, McClair, Goram Nott Forest - Robertson, O´Hare, Burns West Ham - Ray Stewart Newcastle - Jim Craig
these are just the ones I can remember...

tony green, sadly injury cut short his career, but he was lightyears ahead of his time
another newcastle scottish great was jimmy smith, a huge talent and kicked out of the game before he was 30
only 10 scotland caps between them, a reflection on injury and also the vast amount of scottish talent around at the time

Wark, Hansen, Dalglish, Nicol and Souness all magic players. Duncan Ferguson could and should of been amongst the top, frightening amount of talent north of the border back in the day.

the answer is probably based on which generation you would rate as the best time in Scottish football. my five in no particular order would be danny mcgrain sandy jardine Kenny dalglish davie cooper jimmy johnstone. I am fairly sure both mcgrain and jardine were included in the world cup 1974 select team of the tournament. maybe someone could confirm..
