from what i've seen of him he tends to be at his best playing in an advanced position centrally.but is there room at utd for him there?

he would be an ideal man at the front tip of a diamond, but man u don't operate like that, or the middle one in the the three in a 4-2-3-1.which i believe is where rooney plays when all the players are available.

he can operate from wide ares but it seems to me that he's not as effective.

i will be interested to see the utd line up when they're fielding their best team when all players are available.

IMO the only players Utd have right now that are good enough to play for them are De Gea, Rooney and RVP (I like Carrick but think there are any number of players better than him around the Prem). The rest either have a lot to prove, are well past their best or were never anywhere near good enough so I'd say he can pretty much choose a position!

or perhaps rssurect the ol' xmas tree formation?

rvp up top, rooney mata behind him, three across the park, and a back four.

Not only does it seem like his best position is where Utd's best player plays but also if he's not a Mourinho-type player then I can't see how he's a Moyes-type player either.  I'd say someone other than Moyes is doing this deal

it seems to me that they might have the same problems that england had with gerrard and lampard, with rooney and mata.

diffrrnt types of player, that need to operate in the same area of the pitch, and if you try and move one to a differnt area they become less effective.

for a side needing a new back four and midfield a very strange buy for me,especially for that amount of money.
and where does fellani fit in hear(never thought he was a utd type player).

Best we could play at the moment (if all fit!)

De Gea
Rafael or Smalling (as bad as each other!), Vidic (or Evans), Jones, Evra
Januzai, Carrick, Fletcher, Mata
RVP, Rooney

Subs: the 2 from the above not picked + Valencia, Welbeck, Hernandez, Young and I suppose Lindegaard/Amos

Not ideal to have Rooney right up with RVP and Mata on the right but they're both blessed with good football brains and could inter-change well. At least with the above Jones is in the right place, we have solidity in central midfield and a decent attack. Next buys some full backs and a decent keeper please Moys.

Is there the possibility of dropping Rooney a bit deeper, playing 4-2-3-1, with RVP up top and Januzaj, Rooney, Mata as the bank of 3.  Could interchange in similar manner to Arsenal's attacking midfielders.  Think the defence / gk is the problem areas for United, so agree this is a strange signing at this time

rooney tends to drop off throughout games, so even if you play two up top he'ss be closing down the space that mata operates in.

if you play a three in midfield the same problem could well occur imo.
