How do some managers keep getting jobs however skilled they appear to be at wrecking the clubs they manage?
Mark Hughes was a great player but what a terrible manager he appears to be.
Paul Ince likewise.

Has Hughes been a bad manager really ?
Wales: Did a good job . Probably should have qualified for Euro 2004 from a tough group ( though screwed it up from a great position by negative approach when on the verge of qualifying) . Still the only one of the last 6 Wales managers to get them in contention. Blackburn : Did well there , established them a Top 8 side. City: Signed Kompany before The Arab takeover . Poor first season . Was looking better 2009/10 , drew several games they dominated .Sacked for being 5th i think midway ,Mancini did not do much better 2nd half of season, and never started to take off until spent fortunes in the next 3 transfer windows. Overall not terrible, though obviously not good enough the size of club /expectations. Fulham :Average QPR: Shocking , no argument there. Stoke : Average so far . Overall nothing to rave about but i wouldn't say terrible. |

be interesting to see what seedorf does as a manager,always rated him miles in front of shearer,hansen etc when doing punditry for the beeb

Yeah Ince did do well at MK Dons but he ruined it by going back there and failing miserably. Hasn't done anything of note since he left them the first time round.

most managers spend years looking for good defenders and a good defensive set up,hughes inherited one at stoke and has managed to turn them into a pub back 4 at times

Tobermory - so basically the last time Hughes had any kind of success was 6 years ago?
At City he spent an absolute fortune buying the likes of Robinho, Kompany, Zabaleta, SWP, Adebayor, Tevez, Kolo toure, Lescott, de Jong, Bridge, Barry, Santa Cruz.......and did nothing with them. |

It's fair to say the first half of his CV is a lot better than the 2nd and that Blackburn was his last undisputed success.
City did improve a lot while he was there , not enough to justify the expenditure . I thought they were going the right way though , and were at least contenders for Top 4 . I don't think City were much better after 16-18 months of Mancini than they were when Hughes left. I think he has mostly been average since , and i do think Stoke is his last chance at this level. |

It's all about the players he inherits, no manager can
turn a poor side into a good side, unless given a good period of time to do so. Arguably the greatest of all, took 4 years to win a trophy. |

There's a great chapter on the manager merry go round and why it is destined to fail in the Soccernomics book.
The book itself is hit or miss but the chapter about managers is spot on. |

Chris Hughton a shocking omission. I'd take Hughes over him any day. If the Norwich owners are reading this, if you have to go British, Mackay or Pearson of Leicester would be my picks. But I think you need to scour Europe for the foreign Paul Lambert.
