If a side score a large proportion of their goals in the 2nd half, why is it a useless stat?

Hull are going to be gutted if they dont take all 3 points from this game.

Swansea are offering nothing at all going forward. Delighted I took the early red after the goal went in and backed unders instead.

Don't be ridiculous. A lot of teams do, but some don't. Liverpool certainly don't score more in the 2nd half, United don't, i can't imagine Stoke or Palace do and i know Hull don't.

And in any case scoring 4 first half and 17 2nd half is quite a difference worth taking into account.

Significance is not just a stats word, you know.

Swansea won back to back games in September. Valencia and Palace.

As for the small sample size being unreliable. The stats are for this team, this season, so obviously it's a small sample size, why would we care what a different Swansea side under a different manager did 3-4 years ago? Would you compare United under Moyes' stats to the side last season under Fergie. No.
So how big a sample size would you suggest before you'd consider such a stat to be reliable?

Not to mention, it wasn't unreliable, because they scored in the 2nd half.

Yeah I was going to back Swansea to win the second half because of their second half trend...it guess it can happen with possession based teams. Their passing makes the opposition work harder so they tire second half, whereas Swansea are likely to improve such passing and sharpen up second half, get into their groove etc.

This could go on all season...how many matches now have Swansea been like this - better in the second half I mean. 17/21 goals scored in the second half.

Theres no binary between a stat with a small sample and a stat with a big one...Swanseas trend is, depending on your defenition, a stat with a small/medium sized sample, 18 games or so incl Europa league. They are certainly not going to keep up a trend of 80% goals scored second half, but its not useless information either.

But what one person considers a meaningless stat, might be very useful to another.

In the half time table this season Hull are 7th and Swansea are nudging the relegation spots. Yet the proper table tells a different story. So with that info to hand, and Swansea showing form for waking up in the 2nd half of games, it wasn't inconceivable to have expected a 2nd half Swansea comeback.

Like i say, meaningless to some, but probably useful to others. If we all agreed on everything, there would be no betfair.
