Keith Curle, Carlton Palmer, Geoff Thomas, Andy Sinton, John Fashanu all played during the same era. They must have played in the same game at some point. And there must be others that somehow got a cap while Steve Bruce didn't.

disagree biscuit,when southampton have 2/3 players then the omens are not good,for the national side.I am not being disrespectful to the saints,but that is the reality.
In all honesty ashley cole is the only world class player england currently have.Gerrard is past his best,rooney is a very very good player,but not world class,the rest are average. |

rooney is world class. he was the best player on the pitch by a mile in the arsenal game, and that pitch included ozil and rvp, and he's done that at club level repeatedly.
it's just no one's ever managed to build an england team that exploits his quality. ditto gerrard, imo. |

you see mc, I just don't buy the raw materials argument. look at the last decades. epl teams have been 8 of the last 18 finalists - and all those teams have been built round key english players. actually, the much mocked "golden generation" has delivered - but only at club level.
if you can't build something from those players to not necessarily win but at least challenge internationally, the problem is what you're doing with your resources. |

Yes but the English players have always been the brawn, not the brains. The vicious club, not the subtle knife. You chuck all the English team's brawn and club together and you get a team that is severely lacking in brains and knife. England.

bit harsh on rooney lampard and gerrard, imo. more to all three of them than that.

If you describe any of the three though, they're physical players. Rooney's brute force and pace, Lampard's stamina and Gerrard's power. They are all proficient technically but none of them are strong off the ball or in terms of in-game intelligence.

rooney and lampard on form both read a game well, imo.
not winning when you have ashley cole, ferdinand, terry, lampard, gerrard and rooney to base a team round is one thing. but knowing in advance you have no chance means you've used your resources badly. the other problem that gets mentioned less is players that might have really stepped up taking big money to sit on a bench rather than developing their game. how good might joe cole have been if he hadn't taken the abramovich money? we'll never know. |

..both Chile and Germany seemed to advance up the pitch to attack......as a team....far more cohesion....
..technically on another planet.... nothing personally against Lampard and Gerrard...they have been very good servants in footballing terms to their country....but they still seem to playing the game as it was played a decade ago....any midfield containing either one of them will be outplayed by even the so called moderate teams......Chile a case in point.... ...if we are going to go down in Brazil lets at least do it with some verve and energy....play Wilshere, Barkley and Townsend and even Walcott and at least retain some pride and hopefully optimism for the future... |

I was especially impressed with the way Cleverly, Smalling and Rooney managed to all miss the ball/player for the goal - well i say missed the player Cleverly and Smalling managed to find each other in the air to give the German the free header!
