Shankly soon regretted his decision to retire and tried to continue his involvement with the club, mainly by turning up for team training at Melwood. He said he still wanted the involvement as the club had become his life.[156] He soon stopped going to Melwood because he felt there was some resentment and people were asking what he was doing there.[157] Feeling unwanted, Shankly began to resent the club although he still attended matches but sat in the stand away from the directors and staff. He was especially annoyed that Liverpool did not invite him to attend away matches as the club's guest. When, finally, he was invited to travel with them to the away leg of the 1976 UEFA Cup Final in Bruges, he was accommodated in a separate hotel and said he found that insulting.[157] Shankly compared Liverpool's attitude to that he encountered at other clubs, including Liverpool's great rivals Everton and Manchester United, where he was received warmly. He recalled Manchester United manager Tommy Docherty's reply to a Liverpool director: "Aye, Bill's welcome here".[158] About Everton, once his greatest rivals, he wrote: "I have been received more warmly by Everton than I have by Liverpool. It is a scandal that I must write these words about the club I helped to build"
I'm a Man United fan, but still recognise the great man as one of the very best that has ever led a team in this country.
Grow up you little pr1ck.
How have Chelsea treated past managers ?

A dull snipe at Liverpool AH. 40yrs ago for ffs - all the protagonists have long gone.
Bill Shankly - brilliant manager. Built that club. Played poker with the directors at the end and came unstuck which was a sad end to his time there. In my top 5 UK managers of all time. Just let them do the celebration and shut the fck up.

Not sure the United reference isn't back-writing history but when Shanks turned up at the training ground after he'd retired, the club were certainly in a b0llocks position.

It's difficult to say I suppose. But it's quite obvious that Busby's presence had a detrimental effect on the likes of Frank O'Farrell, who has labelled Sir Matt as a 'nasty, vindictive man'.

You think a "dodgy Russian billionaire" will ever make honest Liverpool his home?
Do you think your owner & manager could have ever built Chelsea up the way that Shankly & Paisley did ?

You'd think that after trying to hound out Rafa before his team had even kicked a ball a Chelsea fan would try to show a little more class than try to snipe at how other clubs treat their former managers.
But then again, Hunter would probably have to do a wiki search to find out what class means.

On a serious note does anyone (maybe the Utd granddads) know if Redrebel's story is true. I've heard it said before and the timescale sort of fits: Busby's lurking shadow did seem to have a negative impact on that team and it's entirely plausible that Liverpool saw an equally charismatic and iconic manager would also not give Paisley a fair crack of the whip if he were a frequent visitor to the training ground and players were wondering which one to call boss.

Or as we prefer to remember him, the bloke who, (rightly), decided O'Farrell was sh1te.
That's as maybe. However, United were already in decline when he took over in 1971. They still had a lot of the side that won the European Cup. It's obviously conjecture as to whether or not things might have been different had Busby left the club completely when he retired. But it would be foolish not to believe that the decison not to allow Shanks some sort of role at the club other than as manager was not influenced by events at Old Trafford.

Away from the point scoring nonsense of the opening post, the village that Shankly grew up in, Glenbuck, was very similar to the villages in which my ancestors lived.
Glenbuck was once a thriving mining village which probably produced more professional players per head than anywhere in Britain.
They had a famous local side - Glenbuck Cherrypickers.
Before Shankly, 2 ex Glenbuck players won the FA Cup with Spurs in 1901, with Sandy Brown scoring in every round. That summer the trophy spend some time in a Glenbuck shop window.
Shankly always spoke about his life in Glenbuck and how it shaped him. The village was abandoned decades ago and nearly all of the remains have been destroyed by opencast mining. The mines have now been abandonded since the liquidation of Scottish Coal and it will cost around £15m to repair the nearby area. Thanks to council incompetence, there is only a fraction of that available to restore it.
Despite this, the council have a picture of Shankly at reception of their main office even though he would have taken a flamethrower to the place.
Virtually the only thing left in Glenbuck is a monument to Shankly which was the work of Liverpool fans.

I don't know whether what was happening at OT had anything to do with Liverpool's decision - but I certainly don't recall mention of it at the time and I'm inclined to think it's wisdom after the event. United were in decline when they won the European Cup in 68 really. At that stage though Sir Matt had lost the drive to rebuild; not surprising given what he'd lived through. Simple truth was that the first two managers after Busby simply weren't anywhere near up to the job.

It's amazing isn't it John, how a person's upbringing can shape their future achievements in life. I'm currently reading Tommy Smith's autobiography. He tells of how Shankly & Paisley literally did build Anfield. Doing repairs, painting the stands, cleaning, etc. They both installed that humble, hard-working ethic into the players. Smith states how it was months before he even kicked a ball at the club. He was part of the ground-staff that had to undertake a lot of menial tasks in keeping the stadium up to scratch. Can you imagine how a lot of today's 'precious' young players would react if they had to do that ? They'd be crying child slavery.

How the sport has changed eh. Oh sorry, did I say Sport??
Such a shame its what it is now, although it does seem to suit Chelsea fans, they had no success when it was a sport.

Down the pits you had to trust the man next to you with your life. It was a hard life and people had to look after each other. Shankly took that with him.
I remember him speaking about it and what he saw as socialism and it was mesmerising.
I always remember the quote that if me and you are cleaning a floor I want my bit of the floor to be cleaner than yours. Not just for what he said but how he said it.

Despite the way that Shanks was treated by the club, he was always the greatest in the eyes of the fans. You have to remember the type of people who used to run football clubs in those days and they certainly weren't working class. Clearly Shanks felt slighted by the club but never by the fans. Who will ever forget the 1965 cup final(Liverpool's 1st ever FA Cup win) followed 4 days later by a home tie against the all powerful Inter Milan (3-1) - one of the all time greatest nights in Anfield's history. Or the second leg against Ajax when Shankly convince the fans that Liverpool would overcome a 0-5 deficit. There has never been a manager who was so close to the fans.
The OP is a complete to$$er who hasn't got a clue what Shankly meant to the Liverpool fans and the city so do us a favour Hunter F**K off and mind your own business.

Rommel - you don't have to justify the club's behaviour to a to$$er like Hunter. The only decent decision the board made in those days was appointing Shanks - they didn't give a f**k about the fans who had to put up with appalling safety and poor amenities.

Any others for the black hole I'm putting together in my Swiss tunnel? (That's not a euphemism.) It's designed specifically for Betfairians who not only have poisonous views of other clubs, (I've got them), but insist on inflicting their notion of wit and insight on the rest of us. No team bias in your nominations please.

Check your history and you will find it was Ken Bates who built the club up from nothing and took Chelsea past Liverpool ,not Abramovich. He was the icing on our cake
In the season before Abramovich came Chelsea beat Liverpool 2-1 to claim a Champions League place,if you check your history you will see your decline and the rise of Chelsea was already in place pre Abramovich.

Ah right, so the mighty Ken Bates made Chelsea the 4th best club in England. I suppose in your world that far exceeds anything Shanks & Paisley achieved. & of course, Roman's bottomless pit of money has nothing to do with Chelsea being the club they are today.
