Mark Lawrenson given ‘reduced role’ on Match of the Day as BBC shake up flagship football programme
Mark Lawrenson has been axed as a Match of the Day regular in a shake-up of the BBC’s flagship football programme.
The corporation admitted Lawrenson would have a “reduced role” on the 4 million-rated programme from next season after announcing its plans to breathe new life into the format.
It appeared the 56 year-old had lost his job as a BBC pundit and co-commentator altogether after no mention was made of the former Liverpool defender in a press release announcing its sports line-up across all platforms and programmes for the new season.
But a spokeswoman told Telegraph Sport Lawrenson would definitely appear on Match of the Day, albeit less often.
She also said Alan Hansen and Alan Shearer would continue as mainstays following speculation all three had been facing the chop as a result of criticism of the show’s current format.
Lawrenson’s name did appear on a separate announcement for Match of the Day 2 and BBC’s Radio Five Live football coverage but his omission from the Match of the Day release was an embarrassing oversight and one the corporation quickly rectified when it was pointed out

Oh yeah how could I overlook Shearer?! I don't mind Linekar if I'm honest, though I realise that puts me in a minority :D
What they did not say in this press release is that Lawrenson is being replaced by Garth Crooks.

can you get rid of hansen, he's too boring and doesn't know what he's talking about. "you can't win anything with kids."
if you can't get rid of him completely please give him a reduced role.
the bbc r losers. their sports presenters are disgraceful, how about that inverdale and the other one who interviewed legend murray at wimbledon this year.

have u heard ray parlour on bbc radio 5 live - he can't string a sentence together. he's the worst.
motd does need a complete shake up. the current crop of presenters are stale and boring and aren't that insightful to the modern game.
They are the best of a bad bunch. At least they do not use Jamie Redknapp as a regular pundit 
it's what they call the bbc gravy train. the snooker commentators are even worse than the likes of lawrenson, hansen and shearer.
Hansen and Lawrenson not relevant to the modern game, were fine in the 90's but football coverage has moved on. Shearer an extremely dull man. Needs a drastic overhaul. Don't see the obsession with ex-pro's as pundits, its a complete fallacy that you need to have played the game to comment on it (you normally hear this from the likes of Robbie Savage when a white van man from Preston takes him apart on air)
It's not the presenters that are the problem, it's the format.

Shearer is the worst of them, extremely dim and boring. Made a woeful fist of management to boot.
I dont think ive ever seen two more smug pundits than Shearer and Hansen, they just seem to pleased with themselves, and lawrenson has always offered piss poor analysis, like when asked if Wigan will stay up last season "they'll be alright" Linekar is ok as presenter, abut gareth crooks please no, hes opinion is the most important in the world dont you know,

I agree with the general dislike of Shearer. He has a face

Shearer was a fine player and a rich man, but as a judge he is an epic mug, he turned down Alex Ferguson and **** up the job as manager of Newcastle. I wouldn't take his opinion on anything football related.
What we don't want is flavour of the month, Clare Balding (unlikely tho it is), to sneak up on MOTD (or is she going to BT Sport???) , that would negate any joy i have of Lawro's departure.

Would love to see Lawrensons greetin face if he found out Crooks had kept his job!
I think Lawro is ok in the role of the co-commentator. He always says it how it is and if the game is awful he won't talk it up like most do these days. For the studio role I would go for Clark Carlisle if he's available.
he is annoying as commentator, he sounds very cynical the whole time
Always remember Shearer saying when he took the Newcastle job "save my place" at motd,obviously worried he might lose his place on what must just about be the easiest gravy train of all.
Although I would shed no tears if he was to get the boot (think he's very average)i'm afraid a place back on the train would soon open up for him elsewhere,in today's world anyone with half a name nevermind someone like shearer who can string a couple of sentances together is made for life.
A pal of mine lives near beagrie and sky send a chauffeur driven merc/bmw for him ffs!

I remember when Baddiel and Skinner where pundits once. Very funny and with a genuine love of the game. They should have more people on like that. Rather than if-you-know-what-you-are-talking-about-then-go-and-manage gobsh1tes. It's easy to comment on something you are looking at a replay of in the studio.
