Muslera saved Tevez pen kick in shoot-out vs Argentina in qf of Copa America 2011. Uruguay scored all 5 of their kicks to win 5-4.

Far from meaningless. Hugely beneficial to all these nations to play in Brazil a year ahead of the WC - get used to the conditions etc.

I guess this game was more important to Uruguay, they tried and wanted the game more, they were more anxious to get the win - And this is where Italians capitalized. For Italy only the 1st place mattered, after missing it they just wanted to play this out. But the game dragged to penalties and Buffon and Bonucci had some scores to settle with luck following the unlucky ending against Spain.
