David Beckham pointed an accusing finger at a mud-pack penalty spot when he skied his crucial kick into the stands and almost out of the ground at the Stadium of Light as England crashed out of Euro 2004.
Sadly, for England's captain and national icon, getting his excuses in first may not be enough to stop him being on the end of some serious accusations at the end of a tournament he must view as a massive personal disappointment.
Beckham's missed spot-kick, his third in succession for England, put them under instant pressure as they lost the quarter-final 6-5 on penalties to host Portugal.
And as he retreated disconsolately to receive the support of his England colleagues in the centre circle, Beckham could not escape the simple fact that it was a moment that summed up his tournament.
Of all the big players expected to deliver for England in Portugal, Beckham was the one who singularly failed to step forward.
Beckhams up there with the best when it comes to penalty taking

I'm old enough to remember Waddle in his prime and what a player he was, went to France and was a brilliant player who as per usual the english never appreciated.

Beckham never performed in the finals of any major tournament, never ever. Most overrated player ever to get 100 caps for his country that's for sure.
Never mind Waddle, remember what George Bets said about him (Beckham)? 'He cant kick the ball with his left foot, he cant head a ball, cant tackle and cant dribble, doesn't score many goals, but apart from that he's alright'
Best got it just about right.
Surely Waddle meant not in his top 100.Beckham never performed in the finals of any major tournament, never ever. Most overrated player ever to get 100 caps for his country that's for sure.Never mind Waddle, remember what George Bets said about him (
i think a lot of the older pros have a negative view on Beckham, whether they thought he was over-rated or a limelight hogger. Shilton slagged him off a few years back. Waddle should have just said that he played with many better players than Beckham when he was in the England side and left it at that
