Not sure how you could tell.  But I'm sure the biggest ever single liability would be the customer involved in that horse laying disaster in 2011 (what was it, £27m?).

Told a punter had 100k on a Barelona win at 1.14.

How about someone involved in the 2007 League Cup Final kerfuffle. And all seemingly written off.
Report Biscuit1979 March 12, 2013 4:37 PM GMT
Must have been Morse.

He politely informed us all that he had upwards of £2million staked on a one day cricket match once.

What happened Darlo

If you wanted to lay that Escholido, or back another dog in the race, and then saw someone wanting to back it with £1m, you'd be getting the hell out of there.

Can't believe he didn't just drip feed a few k here and there. Not surprised it didn't all get matched.

It's someone else on here. I only read about it the other week. Basically it seems people were trying to bet on the first goalscorer market who didn't understand what happened when the teams were announced. They thought they'd guaranteed green when in fact they had very large liabilities.

I believe that some people thought that backing every selection to win to a book less than 100pc thought they would make free munny but forgot about players who weren't to play etc.

Report Biscuit1979 March 12, 2013 4:58 PM GMT
Levskie - the league final fiasco was a thread from money saving expert where people thought they could make 'free money' by laying everyone in the first goalscorer market, not realising that some selections would be voided if the player didn't start.

Thanks biscuit, so what was the outcome for these poor fellows
Report tobermory March 12, 2013 5:05 PM GMT
they ended the game with reds of 12k etc

But Betfair wrote off their losses i think
Report Levskie101 March 12, 2013 5:09 PM GMT
At some point did nobody think to wait and see the squads -_-
Report tobermory March 12, 2013 5:11 PM GMT
they knew the teams they just assumed if they layed Henry and he didn't play before goal they would have a winning lay
Report viva el presidente! March 12, 2013 5:13 PM GMT
think BF actually wrote off negative account balances rather than all losses, because the way the system worked then meant that it let people run up unlimited liabilities regardless of their bank.

that was a happy day - but I still think the original posts on the mummy shaving expert forum were fishy.
Report viva el presidente! March 12, 2013 5:15 PM GMT
the issue was, they didn't understand the void rules in FGS betting. they just thought the lay market had gone overbroke because it was showing 115% or whatever.
Report Biscuit1979 March 12, 2013 5:20 PM GMT
Betfair wrote off the losses because they were partly liable i think in that they let all these people place bets with liabilities way way bigger than they actually had money for in their accounts.
Report Levskie101 March 12, 2013 5:24 PM GMT
Ah i see so they didnt know if player X didnt start he was void?
Report viva el presidente! March 12, 2013 5:27 PM GMT
as for biggest ever bets, dunno about matched but I saw a 7 figure position go up in the match odds market of a football match once. was about 4M iirc. disappeared pretty quickly, so probably a typo on a large account.
Report viva el presidente! March 12, 2013 5:30 PM GMT
yeah, that was it levskie. so they were just using automated tools to skim the field at stupid prices again and again. they kept driving the lay side down to 100%, and of course money kept appearing so they kept doing it.
Report Biscuit1979 March 12, 2013 5:30 PM GMT
No levskie, they had no idea.

Read the panic posts in that second link i posted up.

"Can Betfair really come after you? I thought gambling debts were not enforceable"

"And my balance was only £164 to start with. I can't figure it out at all, my head is wrecked trying to work it out!"

"Although the market is suspended I am now showing round about negative £190 for every player and it seems to be rising every minute"

"yeah my account says 0 but my profit & loss says -5K"

and that's just from the 1st couple of pages LaughLaugh

Just heard a guy had 250k on overs 0.5 on a Celtic Rangers derby a few years ago.
Report Mighty Whites 2008 March 12, 2013 6:20 PM GMT
Knight rider had a 100k on Tiger Woods to win the open last year. There was a thread on the golf forum around it.

Sure there have been plenty of big bets over the years.
