David Beckham is imo the best English player EVER

For me what makes him that is the combination of :

BRILLIANCE ON THE PITCH

COMMITMENT TO HIS PROFESSION

PURE CLASS IN A SEA OF FILTH THAT ARE TOP FOOTBALLERS

MODEL FATHER AND HUBBY AGAIN WHEN MANY VILE PRO'S ARE EVERYTHING BUT

FITNESS IS INCREDIBLE ( SEE COMMITMENT )

All over he still acts like the Lad from London and unlike so so many ( almost all soccer ballers ) I don't begrudge him a penny of his fortune.

So many pressures could have fukkkked his head up but they haven't

Well done Becks, a brilliant gesture no matter that you don't need the money...TOP CLASS

to be fair it's a very efficent way of giving money to charity, had Beckham taken the salary he would be massively taxed (especially if the new French tax bands are to be believed). But if it's a donation to charity I'm pretty sure it would be untaxed so the charity gets it gross

"after tax it would have been a drop in the ocean had he collected it anyway"
He's on a 5 month contract which probably means he'd be able to avoid coming under the French Tax regime. By doing this he's perhaps making doubley sure they won't try and get him for his world wide income from endorsments and so on.

Tbh given Hollands silly tax grab on high earners, you'd wonder why any high earning footballer would want to move to the country and then start handing 75% of their income over (although for now I think that's been vetoed by the french courts).

What is the source for this gibberish?

I strongly doubt someone as media savvy and image conscious as Beckham would be silly enough to use this as a way to get paid more effectively...it would get out very sharply and his image would suffer for it. In case you had not noticed he values the whole saint David thing. I'm sure he's got plans about what he wants to do after football after his involvement in the Olympics...whilst you're thinking one step ahead he's probably thinking three.

Has he given up some of his image rights to PSG?

No, the share given to the club only involves contracts signed after the player has put pen to paper on a longer term contract. In practice, Beckham will continue to receive all of the advertising earnings on his contracts with H and M, Adidas and Samsung but will give to PSG half of any contract he may sign after the five month contract is up, French clubs negotiate 50% of players image rights for a higher salary to the player.

In France, Yohan Gourcuff negotiated such a contract when he joined Lyon, which was disastrous for the club, who paid him an enormous salary (480,000 euros a month) in the expectation of advertising returns which never materialised.

Are there any tax implications for his plan to donate all his salary to charity?

"He'll certainly pay a bit less tax but it (the donation) is above all a good PR stunt," said Hocquemiller. "He's arriving in a country in a financial crisis and this is how he is trying to silence his detractors."

"Whatever happens and taking into account his additional revenue sources in his overall earnings he,Beckham, certainly won't be playing  for free at PSG."

Forget the charity stuff, someone actually said that Beckham was a better player than Lampard! Laugh

Lampard, at his best, was miles better than Beckham. It's not all about goals scored, BUT, Beckham only hit double figures in the league once in his career, at any club he's been at. Lampard is all set to hit double figures for the tenth season in a row. Ten seasons. Not as a striker, but as an attacking midfield player. Amazing.

In terms of what Beckham could do better than Lampard, he could cross it better...maybe long-range passing (and that's debatable, as Lampard is an excellent passer) and that's about it.

Beckham was an excellent player who's on-field achievements/ability have been inflated by his incredibly successful brand. But players such as Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes were all superior to him.
