agreed. abolish penalties and off side rule. Football would be a joy to watch.

bring back poaching in the box I say.

and if betfair included a market called "dog on the pitch?" yes/no. Life would be complete.

Interesting idea. Big problem defining / interpreting 'clear goal scoring chance' though. Would lead to lots of inconsistency.
Overall I'd leave things as they are but maybe clarify the interpretation of the handball law to get rid of all this unnatural position lark. |
By:
what about a blatant goal chance pen = 1 pen and you get a goal, tackle where not directly going to score = 2 pens you must score the 2 to get the goal. handball the same. bit like basketball pens, and to make it more interesting on the 2 pen goal. same player must take each pen with each foot. trying to put the fun back into football

i agree its v difficult and subjective but dont forget that according to the current laws of football THE REFEREE HAS TO MAKE THIS DECISION ANYWAY i.e. when deciding whether to give a red card to the player who fouled |
By:
lol interesting idea loui !!
By:
referee decides if its a 1 or 2 pen decision, judging by goalscoring chance or not. handball position (handball on goal line should be pen without goalie, and the same player who handled it, in goal. cant use his hands obviously)and no more reds for pens, unless tackle is vicious.
By:
when alls said and done though, the refs probably got enough on his plate
By:
not sure about the first bit but agree on no red cards for pens - another terrible FIFA rule which ruins games and is totally unfair
By:
this would not make it any harder for the ref - he has to decide whether its a clear goal-scoring chance at the moment
By:
Agree about no red for pens, unless its a really bad foul. I'd also award a 'penalty goal' in the very rare instances where it is certain a goal would have been scored without the foul eg Suarez handball v Ghana.
By:
anyway im quite convinced most of the laws brought in in recent years are specifically designed to be dumb to increase 'controversy' which of course is the life-blood of football
By:
Martin Atkinson awarded a penalty goal in the FA cup semi final at wembley last season
By:
no he didnt, he awarded a goal in error
By:
no reds for most pens is a good idea, the pens enough punishment for that, and red cards usually spoil games, and bets

I would make the following changes to football
no passing the ball back to the keeper, no offside |

the red for a pen is rather draconian. as i recall it was introduced to combat the "professional" foul.
it seems to me that they need to differentiate between a cynical professional foul, and what you might call a normal "run of the mill" foul. by all means dish out reds to players who commit deliberate fouls to stop players, but for the mistimed or slightly late challenges a pen is enough imo. |
By:
You gaggle of mugs would swiftly ruin this beautiful game of ours.
2 penalties for non goal scoring opportunity fouls ![]() The double punishment of a red and a penalty is the only area that needs addressed. Unless the actual foul itself is worth of a red then you should not get a red because that goal scoring opp is replaced and the offender is punished with a yellow. Please note that extremely cynical fouls in the face of e.g. an open goal would still constitute a red card under this premise. |
By:
a prime example of this is a foul by the keeper. if they come out at a forwards feet they can miss the ball by a fraction and get the slightest touch on an attacker and get a red.
they can also come flying out with no chance of getting the ball and virtually rugby tackle the forward and incur the same punishment. imo in the first instance a pen is an adequate punishment. |
By:
Agreed.
I remember Ole Gunners foul a few years back against Newcastle. That is a proper red. Where would you stand on Steven Taylor's handball and then 'I've been shot act'? Another red as that was a certain goal and extremely cynical foul. Problem with this adjustment of course is it gives the officials more to think about which on the evidence of their current performance levels can only lead to further errors. |
By:
Like the OP, ref's decide most games now in my opinion, whether it be a red card or a pen.
Both are out of proportion influences on the game. |
By:
red cards and penalties are an important part of the game, and there would be a sort of anarchy if they weren't used.
it's quite straight forward the way i see it. a penalty for a foul in the box. and a red for a "deliberate" foul in the box |
By:
^^^ could u miss the point a bit more please?
By:
of course nothing will change because the authorities are much more interested in causing moments of 'controversy' than actually making the game fairer and better. if the pundits and fans couldnt get all hot and bothered about 'controversial decisions' there'd be little to talk about!
By:
why not just award a goal instead of a red and a sending off
sending off ruins game ( usually) , just give offending player a 2 month ban or 6 games or the like, and fine the club 10 x the players weekly wage (with f'ing image rights included) that'll cut it down |
By:
the simple answer is for the ref to award a penalty for a clear goal-scoring chance whether the player is in the box or not. no need for a red card.
By:
so long as player and club are punished after the game, 11 v 11 should be maintained wherever possible

i wouldn't say a free goal. the amount of times i used to be on overs and a penalty would be missed was crazy.
