Purchased a new house and moving in shortly. Want to get decorating sorted out asap.

Currently the house is mainly wallpaperd - I'm guessing 10-15 years old. Do you think the walls will need re-plastering once the wallpaper is removed? I just want the walls painted.

Also..... the ceiling are those awful al fresco circle things that were fashionable 20 odds years ago. How do you get them them flattened into normal ceilings?

Any help appreciated....

A plasterer for ceiling !!

A painter & Decorator for your walls !!

Simples !!

That is who I phoned when I was getting my 16 bedroom mansion done !!

Hire (or borrow) a steam stripper to get the paper off the walls (careful when it starts spitting). It's unlikely the walls will need re-plastering but use lining paper before you paint.

Get the fresco circle thing down then work out what you need to do. Try working around the edges with a stripping knife. You might get away with needing just a bit of filler but if any of the ceiling comes down you might need a bit of bonding and a skim. If the ceiling comes away you'll need a plasterer not a decorator but it's unlikely it will.

If the fresco circle thing is surrounding a light fitting remember to turn off the electrics.

what do you think The Chaser? Will I need a plasterer or just a professional decorater?

get the decorator, if you need any plastering done he'll tell you but most of what you're talking about is joey work you could do yourself and save some money.
Report Mr.Angry December 2, 2012 4:45 PM GMT
What makes you think he needs to save money by doing it himself?  Perhaps he would need to take time off work to do it himself, costing him more!

I wanted to paint my living room so i asked my neighbour how many tins of paint he bought for his living room he said five.

after i had finished i had two tins over, i told him and he said yep me too.
Report loui December 2, 2012 4:59 PM GMT
it will depend on how bad the walls are after you,ve stripped them meat loaf, some may be good enough to prepare and re-paint, some might need lining, and some mite need skimming with plaster. plastering the whole house could be quite expensive, so will depend on how big a budget you have for your house

if its artex, be careful if its old, could have aspestos in it..

p.s, could plasterboard it, thats 10x cheaper as well

Report hippie December 2, 2012 5:06 PM GMT
You might be right eyeball, "fresco circle thing" probably = artex. I thought he meant a ceiling rose.

Dont feck about you will regret it. Get a proper job done while you can.

Once you moved in will be right pain in arse. Had large lounge and dining room plastered for a grand and painter did great job in 3 days.

Will be worth it in long run.
