Those were bad news for all us Greek traders / punters... I was not only one of the first Greek traders to use Betfair, but one of the first traders independent of nationality, that was back in 2001 when I was living in London. 2006 I returned to Greece and those five years i spent in the UK were the best years of my life, never been a daily regular in the forums or betting huge amounts like you guys, but betting with Betfair has been a good part of my life so from all Greek players thank you guys and good luck to all of you!

Opap is one of Europe's largest listed gambling firms. It made a net profit of 126m euros ($162m; £100m) in the first six months of the year.

The deadline for expressing interest in the 33% stake being sold is 19 October.

Opap has exclusive rights to operate 13 games of chance until 2030 and a 10-year licence to operate 35,000 video lottery terminals.

"The complete privatisation of Opap will be carried out transparently, rapidly, and with efficiency," said Opap chief executive Yiannis Emiris.

The government had previously only been planning to sell 29% of Opap.

Earlier in the month, the government said it would be imposing a 30% levy on Opap's profits until 2020, followed by a 5% levy until 2030.

Shares dropped 18 percent to 4.31 euros in Athens, the biggest decline in Europe’s Stoxx 600 Index and Opap’s biggest decline since at least April 2001. The stock has lost 31 percent since Greece’s Kathimerini newspaper reported the EU tax talks on Sept. 14. That left Opap with a market value of 1.37 billion euros ($1.79 billion).

While Greek society is struggling to cope with harsh austerity measures, Greece's state gaming company is going to finance the set-up of 819 gaming halls!

The Greek state gaming company OPAP will subsidise the hosting of 16,500 video lottery terminals, which it expects to be operational within the next year.

Each gaming hall will cost about €80,000, operate on a 24-hour-basis, have an area of 125 to 150 square metres and house between 15 and 25 slot machines.

Almost half of the gaming halls will be located in Attica!

Conservative estimates refer to a market with an annual turnover of 5 billion euros by 2015, while the most optimistic estimates refer to a market of around 10 billion!
