Report Srichaphan or Ancic? November 5, 2012 10:22 AM GMT
Btw, I am putting together a 'Football Goals' spreadsheet which shows the number of goals each team has scored/conceded in ten years of football, in all European domestic leagues. If you want to know anything from that, just give me a shout. I haven't done Russian football yet though!

Report Srichaphan or Ancic? November 5, 2012 10:54 AM GMT
I can use the stats to combine the home and away team's %s, calculate what the odds should be according to historical stats, compare them to what is on the markets, and then determine the variance. How I determine the stake, Im not yet sure.
Report Srichaphan or Ancic? November 5, 2012 10:55 AM GMT
Man Utd are 56% overs.
Report lukekelly88 November 5, 2012 10:55 AM GMT
Agree this weekend a league best in the world for goal backers
Report CJ70 November 5, 2012 10:57 AM GMT
If you are going back years it's likely to be someone like Newcastle. Not sure I'd be backing them now though.
Report Srichaphan or Ancic? November 5, 2012 10:57 AM GMT
AFC Wimbledon is the team. But that is not based on ten years of course, as they are reasonably new to the league.
Report Biscuit1979 November 5, 2012 10:57 AM GMT
The question is, what relevance do results from 8/9/10 years ago have when working out your present day odds. For example, 10 years ago Man City were sh*te and their results not that good, whereas now they win almost every home game. So you shouldn't really go back more than 18 months for them.

Although i'm convinced people use Liverpool's results from the 80s when working out their current day odds.
Report jin_kazz November 5, 2012 10:58 AM GMT
wow

i'd definitely back overs in the next Wimledon's game in premier league
Report Srichaphan or Ancic? November 5, 2012 10:58 AM GMT
who said Premier League?
Report jin_kazz November 5, 2012 10:59 AM GMT
oh

i didn't know that league 2 is a "major european league" now
Report Srichaphan or Ancic? November 5, 2012 11:00 AM GMT
It is none of the teams you mentioned in the Premier League anyway.
Report Srichaphan or Ancic? November 5, 2012 11:00 AM GMT
Biscuit, I know what you mean. I was thinking of a way of lessening the stats from the furthest seasons away, somehow, but not sure how.
Report Srichaphan or Ancic? November 5, 2012 11:01 AM GMT
i.e. the stats from the most recent season count for more.
Report Srichaphan or Ancic? November 5, 2012 11:02 AM GMT
but I also know that there are some teams which have a defensive philosophy which goes back a few years at least, some grounds which are not as easy to score goals on etc. and that will be shown in the stats too.
Report Srichaphan or Ancic? November 5, 2012 11:03 AM GMT
For example, if you look at the Dutch league, most teams score lots of goals, but Vitesse, for example, low scoring for many seasons. There must be a reason for it.
Report Biscuit1979 November 5, 2012 11:04 AM GMT
I personally never go back more than 2 seasons. Teams change players, managers, tactics so often these days.

Sometimes that is even too long. For example what is the point of looking at last years results for AC Milan, when this season they've sold Ibra, Silva and Cassano
Report jin_kazz November 5, 2012 11:06 AM GMT
and shevchenko!
Report Srichaphan or Ancic? November 5, 2012 11:06 AM GMT
There is a team in Scotland which has less than 1% of matches finishing 0-0 over 10 years. On the bookies, you can regularly get 1.05+ on the under 0.5 market.
Report Biscuit1979 November 5, 2012 11:06 AM GMT
Likewise Roma, this year they've got Zeman in charge who plays all out attack every week, so results beyond this season are pretty much irrelevant

Report Srichaphan or Ancic? November 5, 2012 11:11 AM GMT
You'd think that, because of their goals scored being high this season, and conceded. But if you take a look at Roma stats, for ten years prior to this season, they are normally a high scoring team. Just 19% of matches under 2 goals, which is the sixth lowest % in Italian Serie A and B.

SorA - i'm intrigued about the Scottish team.

is it Elgin?
Report Srichaphan or Ancic? November 5, 2012 11:14 AM GMT
no, although they did go on a run of seven seasons without a 0-0 home or away until this season.
Report Srichaphan or Ancic? November 5, 2012 11:15 AM GMT
I think they have had one or two 0-0s this year though.
Report Srichaphan or Ancic? November 5, 2012 11:16 AM GMT
but if you bet overs on that lowest Scottish league, you'll win more often than you lose, I think.

I want to post this without sounding negative, but what do you hope to achieve from doing this? Professional odds compilers do the same thing, but in a more sophisticated manner, using advanced software. It is extremely difficult to find an edge, just by looking at these basic stats, and as someone already posted, a lot of the stats you will be looking at are irrelevant.
It requires a much more rigourous approach, creating supremacy ratings based on bivariate models etc etc. I don't wish to discourage you, but just think about your end goal. If it is just for a bit of fun then great, but if you intend to profit long-term, you need a different strategy. Best of luck Happy
