The chief constable of West Yorkshire police, Sir Norman Bettison, "boasted" about having helped to "concoct" a false account of how the 1989 Hillsborough disaster was caused, according to the Labour MP Maria Eagle.

"We were in a pub after our weekly evening class. [Bettison] told me that he had been asked by his senior officers to put together the South Yorkshire police evidence for the forthcoming inquiry. He said that 'we are trying to concoct a story that all the Liverpool fans were drunk and we were afraid that they were going to break down the gates so we decided to open them'."
from the guardian.

think this chap is going to have to go into hiding after these allegations

Don't be silly, no Liverpool fans had touched a drop that day... That is an established fact isn't it?

Every single police officer on duty should be on a manslaughter charge and they may well be.  Sickening example of uk policing

I lost my 14 year year old best mate, whose chest was crushed so bad his ribs cracked and punctured a major artery.

A family lost their son and brother - but your right 23 years on and with the truth out, it doesn't matter, lets forget it and have a bet hey, it was only an accident wasn't it.

Its not about bringing people back its about making sure the peole who covered this up are suitably brought to justice.

And for the record I am a bitter blue but unlike you I have a brain and common sense.

If the HIP had found out that Liverpool fans were to blame for the tragedy, I certainly doubt you'd want this to go away then would you ?

If someone was caught up in the tradagy of 89 and deals with it in his/her own way and sees this person wearing a big red top with a big "96" on it, aint doing the victim any favours .

The victim would be instantly reminded and brought back to that unfateful day.

the BitterBighter - you come across on this forum as being totally and utterly obsessed by Liverpool.................isn't it about time that YOU were actually able to move on and get on with YOUR life? As others have already pointed out you are pretty stupid so it is unlikely you will be able to understand or accept this..............

I hear there's 1400 policemen/women to be interviewed. I guarantee you not one will be found guilty. Cover up central, personally I hope they never stop until the lot of them are prosecuted!!

go put on a big red top with a BIG 96 on it and parade it down the high street and wearing it with pride opposed to diginified rememberence.

I think the main purpose in interviewing 1400 policemen & women is to ascertain just how the senior officers behaved before, during, & after, the disaster. Most of the normal bobbies did the best they could that day under terrible circumstances. The ones who have a case to answer are those who made all the wrong decisions, & then tried to shamelessly pass the buck.

The FA & Sheffield Wednesday Football Club are now being brought closer to the furnace. MP's brought it to the attention of the house on Monday that Hillsborough was not fit for purpose. It had a safety certificate that was 10 years out of date, & was therefore, operating unlawfully. Both the FA, & SWFC, had a duty of care to provide a safe environment for paying customers. They failed in that duty of care, even though the warning signs of a possible tragedy unfolded 8 years earlier in a another semi-final match between Spurs & Wolves. No lessons were learned. As a result 96 people lost their lives at the same ground 8 years later.

A lot of people, not just Liverpool supporters, will be following the events over the coming weeks, months, maybe even years. The mother of all parliaments has failed its own citizens for the past 23 years. The establishment set-up to protect each & every one of us now has a foul smell lingering over it. The IPPC, & the subsequent inquiry that will follow, has the opportunity, not just to right a wrong, but to restore confidence in what many feel is a very tainted, class-controlled, British justice system.

Mr meaner. It was the new who have altered their statements I would like to see prosecuted and by that I mean most of them. If that was you or I we would be charged with perverting the course of justice which normally carries a custodial. I won't hold my breath!!!!

Bettison resigns probably to secure his lucrative pension before he was sacked. He clearly lived a lie, managing to con the Merseyside Police Authority into making him Chief Constable of Merseyside. Surely part of his job interview would have been in relation to his role over Hillsborough.
By:
Biscuit1979
When: 24 Oct 12 14:57
Surely Bettison can still be investigated and punished if found guilty (ie. have his pension reduced if found to have completely lived a lie)

Knighthoods can also be rescinded - if the truth had been known at the time there is no way that this slimy (unt would have ever made Chief Constable and consequently would never have received a knighthood.

Did one single pig do anything to help anyone mouth to mouth anything   Norman's off to prison soon as I said every officer on duty should be done for manslaughter and the ones that were forcing people back over the fencing done for mass murder

His pension will be reduced by 2/3rds if he's convicted of a criminal offence.

I wouldn't want to be in his shoes right now even if my pension was £1,000,000 pa
