Why is it that only Bookies aren't allowed to make decisions based on profitability?
.....................................................................................

The answer is THEY ARE, but this isn't about profitability. They're saying they'll lay my bet on e.g. Chelsea 'cos they don't know me, but knock you back 'cos they think you're an arber. They don't know the result in advance, and even if they did.....

Question for bookmakers.

You want to limit the stakes on Arsenal for example @ 13/10.  Therefore you would offer me a balance at a reduced price, I'm guessing EVENS.  Fair enough.

Therefore if I wish to back Chelsea @ 9/5 for £1000, do I get offered the first £100 @ 9/5 and the balance at 5/2??  Errrr....................I didn't think so :)

The bookmakers are compelled to take your bet at
the price displayed on their screens and they get
round it by offering half at the price (13/8) and
the other half at a reduced price (11/8) effectively
the whole at 6/4, though they cannot offer you the
whole at 6/4. Confused? It's within the trading rules.

They seem to think that, but so what? If they stick the prices up it shouldn't matter if you're an arber or not, a bet is a bet, they're paranoid. I suppose you should give them credit at least for holding the prices sometimes, more than Ladbrokes do. This argument has been done to death on here.

It is now nigh on impossible for a bricks and mortar firm to compete with exchanges and internet betting as a whole where horse racing s concerned. If that weren't the case then why don't they simply alter their practices now and make more money on horses?

Removing FOBTs would possibly make things even worse in terms of restrictions etc.

"Removing FOBTs would possibly make things even worse in terms of restrictions etc."

Cant agree with that. Remove the FOBTs and they either start taking bets are close down due to lack of trade. It's the FOBT's that are keeping the shops open as they now make that much off them they don't have to accept large bets on horse or sports markets.
Report Banned_Banks September 30, 2012 5:29 PM BST
Loads of shops would close and those that remain would have even harsher restrictions as there wouldn't be a buffer from the FOBT income stream.

All investment would be redirected to online betting and overseas expansion.

As I said earlier I think it is a myth that they would take more horse bets. If it were the case then why would they not just do it now? Regardless of the easy FOBT income I find it hard to believe that they would willingly turn away any income stream.

I witnessed the first day of it. I was working the day that slot machines were first allowed into betting shops. £10 jackpots. Guy walks in & asks for £10 note to be changed into coins & fed them into the machine & repeated this 5 more times. I couldn't believe I was watching someone put more into a machine than the jackpot.

Because B_B, as you well know, the FOBT profits are easy, totally risk free. (Apart from damage caused by newly skinned addicts.) Alias you totally miss the point.

What I am saying is that if there is a potential additional income stream to be had from trading horses differently why on earth would they not do it now and have those profits to top up the FOBT profits?

To suggest that a plc makes a decision to ignore an available income stream because they already get enough from elsewhere is fanciful in the extreme.

Fanciful? Why take ANY risk one one side of your business when the other side is risk free?  I ask you again: has any LBO manager EVER had to seek permission to lay on behalf of a FOBT? They often reach for the phone for seemingly silly amounts on horses or football (witness lots of reports on this forum), but you and I know that a punter could stuff ANY amount into a machine and all the staff can do (or will be allowed to do by their masters) is wait to open the machine and count the loot. Maybe even that won't be required if it's on a card.

The surfeit of in-your-face FOBT advertising speaks for itself.

There is also the question of stake money diverted from racing and sports and into the machines, to the detriment of the levy conspicuously. This is of course difficult to quantify, but it undoubtedly happens.

Report Banned_Banks September 30, 2012 9:05 PM BST
I understand what you are saying however if the risk is deemed reasonable they would do it now. I don't think that the removal of machines would make them increase their appetite for risk. They would turn to online and overseas investments to grow the business.

In terms of machine money going back over the counter I'm not so sure that most would not just disappear. I think plenty of machine players would have little interest in normal betting. I also think that bookmakers would try and get people on other non levy products as the profits are more. Wall to wall football and virtual racing I reckon!
Report Alias September 30, 2012 9:16 PM BST
I understand what you are saying however if the risk is deemed reasonable they would do it now.

If you understand what I'm saying, you'll understand that the risk is only the risk they were exposed to for umpteen years as BOOKMAKERS. That is, bona fide bookmakers (and of course they did prosper) as opposed to operators of mini casinos and arcades.

Let's be honest, the big firms in particular have never had it so good. With GPT replacing the iniquitous and unfair GBD they found themselves treated much more fairly tax wise. Then the "boon" of AWPs and FOBTs. The trouble is, their greed has now led them to the point where they really couldn't care less about racing and sports, so easy is the FOBT living.
Report Banned_Banks September 30, 2012 9:24 PM BST
If you understand what I'm saying, you'll understand that the risk is only the risk they were exposed to for umpteen years as BOOKMAKERS.

I agree however the introduction of the machines came at almost precisely the same time as the advent of BF and the explosion of online betting. High street bookmakers have never had to trade against BF and internet firms without the FOBT income to support them. I reckon it would be almost impossible for most shops bearing in mind their cost base.

What do we end up with then? Online betting only with brutal restrictions and account closures?

Let me assure you that it aint. In Vegas the best books make markets close to 105% and you can get set for real money on sportsbets. Pinny is as good if not better, before the off you can get tens of 000`s on often @ better odds than here.
Australia used to be decent in terms of getting set but TAB has started to **** out lately which is a disturbing trend no doubt started by their witnessing what is going on in Europe.

Call me old fashioned but I reckon a Bookie should have an opinion and live or die by that. He already has a big advantage through the overround and thus deserves no sympathy if he won`t take a decent bet and whether the bettor may or may not be an arber is irrelevant.

They offer odds about an event for people to take. Hills collect or pay out on those odds. If the punter lays off elsewhere it doesn't have any effect on their bottom line. Someone else is paying out.

Either employ someone who understands to compile the odds or get your fresh out of university odds compiler to update his database. Whatever they choose they should at least have the balls to stand their own price imo.

Either employ someone who understands to compile the odds or get your fresh out of university odds compiler to update his database. Whatever they choose they should at least have the balls to stand their own price imo.

Different points here Dave. In a way, it seems we should congratulate WH for at least laying the price to some kind of cash, whereas Lads etc would have simply slashed it. On the other hand, I agree that they should stand a bet, regardless of whether they think punters are arbing or not. Unfortunately, all big books are quite paranoid over this aspect.

Billys generally keep their coupon prices on Premiership games this season although limiting the bets to very modest figures - Man U on Sunday being a good example as they were laying 21/20 for just £50 whereas you could get a few hundred with them on Wednesday when the coupons were first available. Think from memory they went off at around 1.76 on here. Other games from the Championship downwards they slash their prices pretty quickly along with all the other bravehearts.

Next time they knock you down to £50 or even lower, say in a loud voice: "Oh it's a pity you have such staking limits, I was going to have a monkey in that machine over there after I got my monkey on Utd". Then walk out, and don't return until they change.

I take my hat off to any LBO staff who refuse to push punters from sports to FOBTs.

alias that is exactly what they are asking staff to do if they get the increase in numbers or fobts in shops then it can only get worse for sports punters, how long before max £10 all bets for everyone (apart from cartoon racing and fobts) i still cant believe that people have not wised up to these machines

oh and if you are going shop to shop they can tap into the cctv to see who is putting bets on.
