Legal advisers to the families of the 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster have called on South Yorkshire police and SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY FOOTBALL CLUB to admit their culpability in order to avoid prolonging their agony if, as expected, a new inquest is ordered.

Safety at Sports Grounds Act 1975Section 12 of the Act made it an offence to admit fans to a stadium without having obtained an up to date safety certificate. It was also an offence to not comply with conditions set in the Safety Certificate. Stadium owners were under a legal duty to comply with these stipulations.

i'd think that the last thing that the families would want is that a second hearing be stopped without hearing a full submission of all evidence
i'd like to see that mp in court , under oath, and asked why he said what he did |

his statement is online....
he even mentioned in his statement that he was advised to take what he heard from the SWP "with a pinch of salt" thus taking any creditablity in what he said. |

the FA should also be held to account for allowing the match to be played in an unsafe stadium angain they did SWEET FA to protect the safety of the fans.

^ Absolutely correct. The FA should be arraigned for nominating SWFC's ground in the first place. It was surely their duty to know whether or not the stadium had a safety certificate for ANY games, let alone a semi final they directed to be played there.

Agree about the FA. I watched some of the news coverage from the time at the weekend, and Graham Kelly, then FA chief exec, gave away a lot with his demeanour.

the fa didnt even ask to see swfc safety certificate which was invalid
i got this info from the HILLSBOROUGH PANEL REPORT not only did it not have a safety certificte it had been warned numerous time that the maximum capacity was set too high. It was modified after a crush in 1981 but the ground was actually made more unsafe in regards maximum capacity because they did not allow for the space the crush barriers took up. in 1981 swfc were warned about this problem of over capacity by police when 40 fans suffered injuries in a similar crush this was why they installed crush barrires. In 1981 swfc asked why the police had allowed 100s of fans on the parameter of the pitch the police said to avoid deaths. the then SWFC chairman bert mghee replied BOLLOCKS and nothing was ever really solved re possible crushing at future matches. |

What more is known now that wasn't know in 1989 about the role of the FA? All the stuff about the stadium and it's safety certificate was in the interim Taylor Report.

The FA have huge blame to take in this. They chose the venue. And they chose the venue following the trouble in 1981 and the trouble in 1988.

I agree darlo bantam. There was new stuff about the police cover up and lack of emergency response which will lead to a new inquest, but the actual chain of events and cause was set out very clearly by Taylor just a few months after the disaster. In many ways it's even more shocking that the key facts have been known and in the public domain for so long without anyone really being held to account.

Police are usually the target for for blame look at riots etc. i know the Police are no angels but the fact is if this game is held somewhere else i reckon it is definitely a different outcome.

Totally agree with Berto. The facts about what happened have been in the public domain for ages. All the report did was make them more public, and emphasise the fact that there was a cover up and a deliberate attempt to pin blame on the fans. Actually, if you read the Interim Taylor report it was pretty opbvious that had happened as the known version of what happened and the facts were totally different.
When Saturday Comes' front page two weeks after the disaster had pictures of the Police, Graham Kelly and Margaret Thatcher all with speech bubbles saying "It's not our fault" with a picture of fans with a speech bubble saying "It must be our fault again then". |

i wonder if any of these 3 pass the buck merchants had ever be crammed into was was effectively a cage a for 2 hours i think not otherwise they would have made changes before the disaster happened
