Plymouth v Portsmouth preview
Team news ahead of Tuesday's Capital One Cup Round One clash between Plymouth Argyle and Portsmouth at Home Park. Argyle are set to give competitive debuts to summer signings Rhys Griffiths and Johnny Gorman. Griffiths has joined the League Two side on a one-year deal after impressing on trial, putting his career as a firefighter on hold to make the step up to professional football for the first time. Gorman, meanwhile, is on loan at Home Park from Wolves until January. Argentine winger Andres Gurrieri may also make his first full appearance to become the first South American to play for the Pilgrims. Fellow summer signing Jamie Lowry will miss out as he is expected to be sidelined until late October with a ankle ligament injury. New skipper Darren Purse will wear the captain's armband for the first time after a successful operation on an injured toe over the summer. Portsmouth boss Michael Appleton will be forced to pick from youth and development squad players. Any trialists that have featured for Pompey during pre-season are not allowed to feature as the club are currently unable to sign new players. Appleton will therefore call upon the remaining members of last season's youth side and the club's development players. Defender Adam Webster, 17, and academy graduate Ashley Harris are the only surviving members of Portsmouth's original first team, and both are expected to feature in the inexperienced squad. Pompey fell foul of League Two Barnet last season in their first round-one defeat in a decade. That was the first time they failed to score in a League Cup match for eight games. |

Last friendly was actually a 3-0 Pompey victory over Bolton but that was with a side which included trialists who will be ineligible tomorrow. Current price on a Plymouth win (just shy of evens) is a steal. Bulk of side will be youngsters from the 'development squad' who were beaten 2-1 by Salisbury at the weekend.

Yes you're right, I read their friendly results in the wrong order!
By:
Argyle are well capable of losing any match, no matter the age and quality of the opposition.

Will be good to see how Rhys Griffiths gets on. He was about two levels above the WP in his prime. That was a few years ago and you have to think the move to proper football has come to late for him to be a big splash.

Pompey are set to play first team coach Ashley Westwood according to the local paper.
By:
Apparently Portsmouth can still register players until 4.45. Anyone think there will be a market move when the youth team is confirmed or has it already been factored in?
By:
Yes loan players can be registered up until 3 hours before kick off. Plymouth are down to 8/11 now, will probably go shorter still.

Thought I'd missed the boat at evens. Interesting bournemouth getting backed for same reasons. 2.78 into 2.18

Agreed donut. I'm considering laying Plymouth at this price!
By:
I personally think theres value in this all the way down to 1.5. It's got to be the equivalent of Plymouth at home to a blue square South team.
By:
It is thought to be pretty much the same team that played and lost to Salisbury a few days ago so I agree this one has a bit to go yet.
By:
Plymouth finished in 21st place of League Two last season.

These Pompey lads were well beaten by a Bl Sq South side on Saturday. Friendlies always difficult to assess but sounds like they were flattered by the final scoreline. |

I'm an Argyle fan and I would say be careful backing us. Our record in this cup is shocking and our best striker isn't playing. 1st 25mins we haven't looked like scoring.
By:
BBC claims 10 shots at goal for Plymouth, 5 on target, with not even 30mins gone! (Only 1 shot, on target, for Pompey)
By:
And Pompey assistant manager has been subbed off, so the goalkeeper is the only senior pro left on the pitch for Portsmouth.
By:
Four of those five on target roll into goalie 1mph, pompey's oldest outfield player aged 18 with westwood off, could tired badly last half hour here, will have a few wagers h/t.
By:
Would have thought Westwood being off the pitch will mean their organisation drops off a bit too.

By:
stll no value on plymouth @1.75

A big heads up and congrats to @deansmig for being the first to break this opportunity on twitter.
He does not just sell carpets and wallpaper, he spots opportunities too! |

Pompey have started the 2nd half very brightly. I wouldn't be counting my money yet.
