Schumacher ??? Are u 'avin a laugh ???
The guy's a fkin cheat. Ran Hill off the road deliberately in Australia. No doubt that he is one of the best ever drivers, but he aint no sportsman. John Surtees did it on two wheels, and four wheels, when it was a far more perilous occupation. When it comes to swimming, Spitz was the greatest ever. Did it all with no streamlined hat, and a tache. Redgrave a shocking omission. Rowing not the most romantic of sports, but to do what he did for fkin years, with only the glory every four of them, takes some beating. For me, greatest footballer was George Best. He changed the game, and it hasn't been the same since he danced his way through opposing defenders. I have never seen so many birds at a football match, just screaming like they were at a Bay City Rollers concert. Lost his way, but a legend all the same. Cricket's best ever was Sir Garfield Sobers. Bradman couldn't bowl. Rugby.. Barry John, a unique talent. Golf. I would agree with Nicklaus, but no way Woods. Tiger is right up there in terms of ability, but it ends there. Jack was, and is, a class act on and off the golf course. Tiger aint. I rate Gary Player above Woods, as a sportsman. He used to spend two days in a Sopwith Camel travelling to all of the majors in the days when not many of his peers, outside of America, were that bothered, and he won them all. Ed Moses warrants a mention. |

Sebastian Coe got to be considered , his gold medals and the fact his 800 metres world record stood for 15 years put him right up there.

Ed Moses got to be up there.
Unbeaten for a decade - 122 races. Was also involved in bringing drugs tests into athletics. |

A topic like this is entirely subjective, but Federer is miles clear for me. Broken just about every record in the game and could still reach new heights. He is a gentleman who wins and loses with style and grace. On and off the court, he is a fantastic role model to young, aspiring sportsmen.

Ironic that is thread is on the football forum as no footballer should even make the shortlist.

Haile Gebrselassie - top of his game for 20 years in a sport where the brightest usually last 5-6 years tops.
Dozens of world records from 5000m up to marathon. Almost 40 and still running with the best around. Never understood the Ali obsession. Loudmouth who lost several high profile fights. Agree that the trash talk is part of the game, but showed little humility, respect or dignity imo. Compare with champions like Federer who are a class act both on and off the field of play. |

It has to be Ali - the greatest boxer of all time. He transcended the sport and became the worlds biggest star in his day. Notice I say star - not boxing star - not sports star - he was the biggest star in the world and not just for a couple of years - I mean for a couple of decades.
Olympic Gold Medalist World Heavyweight Champion (when that division was full of great boxers) All that and he was a very clever, very funny man and looked like a movie star to boot. |
