Obviously we don't take these results seriously, but bear in mind England have jumped two places above Holland and Brazil who have both lost their last few games and not picked up any points.  The table can't quantify the value of performances.  England's recent results are all pretty good on paper.
Report Return_Of_Dawsy July 4, 2012 11:07 AM BST
Holland and Brazil are gash teams nowadays anyway, I'd fancy England to beat them if they played a match right now.
Report STEPTOES YARD July 4, 2012 11:07 AM BST
Agreed, suppose england look better on paper results rather than performance

wont get docked points off italy tie for getting hammered for long periods, just based on 0-0

England clearly arent 4th in world, somehwere between 8th-16th you would think
Report high_lander July 4, 2012 11:12 AM BST
FIFA rankings are a bit of a joke anyway, they are based on a very dubious points system. Does anyone really pay any attention to them? I doubt that anyone really believes England are the 4th best in the world.
Report Biscuit1979 July 4, 2012 11:14 AM BST
I think we all know the rankings are useless, Scotland are 49th even though the only sides they've beaten in competitive matches in the last 5 years are Iceland, Lithuania, Macedonia and Liechtenstein. They should be closer to 149th
Report Zeman July 4, 2012 11:20 AM BST
@return of dawsy: you must have missed the fact england and holland played a friendly at wembly in february
Report berto77 July 4, 2012 11:21 AM BST
SY has it right imo.  Somewhere between 8th - 16th sounds right.  Italy, Holland, Argentina and Brazil would all be ahead of us.  Debatable where we are in relation to France, Portugal, Croatia and Russia in light of their relative performances at the Euros.
Report high_lander July 4, 2012 11:29 AM BST
Scotland were cheated against the Czech Republic - we only drew when we should have won thanks to some terrible refereeing decisions. Our ranking should be the similar to the Czechs and that puts us around 18-23 and that's about right.
Report Return_Of_Dawsy July 4, 2012 11:31 AM BST
Yes a friendly. None of the players cared ffs, are you trying to tell me that friendly matches should count in world rankings?

Yes the convincing last minute win at home to Liechtenstein only serves to prove your point here Laugh

You will once again be shown up when the WC qualifiers begin.

Well, i guess 60k people went to see a match which meant nothing. LOL. Sure.WEll,

en FYI friendly matches actually do count in world rankings. I guess the fact you dont know says it all.

5th in the Elo rankings too. England aren't pretty but we don't lose many matches. And we're consistent against the weaker teams and - this is a total guess - I'd sayq

It's pretty naive to sduggest the world rankings don't mean anything. However right or wrong they are in this case (on the pitch) they are very important when it comes to seedings for the major championships.

Nice touch of irony in your post there HL.

Scotland, like Wales, Northern Ireland and to a lesser extent Rep of Ireland are suffering for falling down the rankings.

It's going to be very hard for the current sides to progress to a major finals being drawn in pot 4/5/6. They're in need of a golden generation to get a sustained run at this or a seriously good manager (e.g. Trappatoni).

can't argue with that.
england always have to try and win friendlies because their fans and the national press take every game seriously.
so while the opposition might not be that hot, or whether it is a major team taking it easy while preparing for something else, england are racking up points by trying their hardest against them.

it was because of brazil winning friendlies practically every week that they were still ranked number one in the world for a while after their last world cup win, and that was what prompted FIFA to half the points awarded for meaningless friendlies.

I'm not anti-Scottish at all, i just think you lot are sh*t at football. You used to produce great players like Dalglish, Souness, Hansen, Cooper, McStay, Law, Bremner.

Nowadays you have mugs like Alan Hutton and Phil Bardsley in the side and your best striker is Kenny Miller!!

There is some truth in that.  England have won 21 of their last 32 friendlies since 2005.  The only countries to beat them have been Spain (twice), France (twice), Germany, Brazil and Holland.  We rarely lose to sh1t teams.

whereas scotland make a habit of losing to sh!t teams and raising their game against bigger teams.
they beat england at wembley in a playoff, they beat france in france in a qualifier, and they beat holland in argentina at the world cup finals.
(none of that did them any good as they threw it all away against lesser lights)
Report HansUlrichApfelStrudel July 4, 2012 2:10 PM BST
Yes Scotland lost to the lesser light of England so winning at Wembley was not enough for them to qualify.
