How can ANYBODY think this is right and proper
I hope these "People" go bust and regret this for the rest of thier pathetic lives.
A bar is being boycotted after refusing to serve family and friends of a soldier before his funeral because they were wearing their military uniforms.
Matthew Thacker and colleagues of his brother Corporal Michael Thacker were refused entry to the Browns bar in Jordan Well, Coventry. Mr Thacker was with a number of his brother’s colleagues who were to act as pall-bearers during the service at the city’s cathedral on Monday.
Hundreds attended the service for Cpl Thacker, who was killed on duty in Afghanistan earlier this month. Now nearly 50,000 have joined a Facebook group calling for a boycott of the Browns bar this Saturday, which is Armed Forces Day.
Those who have set up the page on the social networking website wrote: “The family have requested that no protest action should be taken, it is Armed Forces Day this Saturday and would be grateful to simply boycott Browns, ignore the place entirely and celebrate the job every military personnel are doing for this country day in day out!
“This group is not about damaging the building, violence or a witch-hunt. Ultimately, the family would like an apology for the disrespect shown to them on an already tough day. Please do not post comments aiming violence or damage towards Browns. This is a peaceful group.”
On Wednesday the owner of the Browns Cafe and Bar in Coventry, Ken Brown, apologised for the incident.
In a statement, he said: “Two uniformed military personnel visited my bar with a view to purchasing a coffee and were refused by my staff as it is company policy not to serve anyone in uniform. I was not present on the premises at the time.
“I have since been made aware of why these soldiers were in Coventry and had I known of the circumstances, I would have willingly served them. I am genuinely sorry for the distress caused to the family of the late Corporal Michael Thacker and through the military family liaison officer I have sent an unreserved apology to his widow Catherine and the soldiers concerned.”
Chief Inspector Kerry Blakeman, who is responsible for local policing in Coventry, said: “Last night we were made aware by social media that there was a Facebook group that had been set up in relation to boycotting Browns restaurant and it was a considerable amount of people who had joined that group. As a result this morning we made some inquiries into what had happened on Monday.”
He said Cpl Thacker’s wife Catherine had accepted an unreserved apology from Mr Brown on Wednesday morning.

Does seem a strange rule...
So no Armed Forces, Police, Fire Service, Nurses, RSPCA, AA, RAC, operating theatre technicians, Cub Scout leaders, Girl Guide leaders, Traffic Wardens, Kwik-Fit mechanics, Dyno Rod operatives, Chemistry teachers, Brass band members, professional footballers, Cricketers.... Sounds like just the place for a quiet drink.. |

well done the staff i say,just doing there job and i bet they got abuse for it as well,but they stood strong and carried out there duties
and what kind of family must these people be if they wanted to go for a p1ss up before the funeral ffs  thats the only distgusting part about this story! |

Edward, whilst I understand your problem with this some establishments have rules which the staff are told to abide by. As the owner has stated if he was there and had been told the circumstances then it wouldn't have been a problem. I'm sure the owner has a perfectly good reason for his rules regarding uniforms otherwise he wouldn't have one in the first place!

dare I even suggest the non-uniform rule is in place because the likes have caused trouble in the past? Don't know, just thinking why there is one. Maybe someone might be able to advise?

when I lived in exeter loads of places had rules like this.
reason was all the squaddies coming down from lympstone and kicking off. the rule makes sense, it just led to an unfortunate result here, and the company's apologised. don't see why you're throwing such a sh!tfit frankly. |

that's what I thought viva. I remember when I used to live near a town with an army barracks. Most weekends it was a brawl outside the pubs. Not suggesting it was always the fault of those in the army but it did seem to follow them around.

I mean, you need them to be a bit rough if you're going to send them to war so fair enough. but you didn't want them to be drinking anywhere near you on a weekend. |

that's right viva. I remember they "took over" most of the towns pubs at the weekends and the pubs almost became a no go area for the locals unless they were of the type that wanted a brawl. Certainly there was an "aggressive" type atmosphere in them especially as it got closer to closing times and the alcohol had been consumed.

Don't serve anyone in uniform? Really. Where does this stop? Office attire, etc. So much for popping out for a drink at lunchtime or after work. Ridiculous that this rule exists in the first place.

maybe the soldiers that turned up in uniform in this public place would have no objection to people being in a nazi uniform or some Taliban gear. Total lack of consideration by these soldiers in my opinion.
