Your question should be "Does anyone not hate Alan Green", surely there can't be a person on the planet with working ears who likes the man?
Report rogerthebutler June 20, 2012 3:58 PM BST
I hope he gets the gig for the Rowing at the Olympics in a few weeks time.

He keeps it simple, conveys the facts and paradoxically, because he's out of his comfort zone and isn't able to take a jaundiced and one-eyed view on whats in front of him,  conveys a genuine enthusiasm for what he is watching and talking about.

It's hard to believe it's the same peevish loudmouth that clogs up the airwaves with his football commentaries, week-in, week-out.
Report toffeeboy June 20, 2012 4:40 PM BST
tbf that's true, he's opinionated, biased and more often than not plain wrong about football but as a rowing commentator I quite like him!

Find it very hard to keep my sanity listening to many of his intolerable side-rants when he is meant to be commentating on the play of the game. I find that he is always outraged by something or another, no matter how insignificant that matter may be in relation to what's going on on the pitch. The other day I heard him cry outrage at having "to walk a mile to the stadium", prefixing this by stating that Michel Platini was at the match, and he bet he didn't have to walk.

I may have an overly bias opinion on him, ready and waiting to pick up on his audio-oafishness, but I don't think I do - I formed the opinion that I can't stand the man long before it apparently became Vogue on betfair forums, and seemingly ever since I started listening to 5live.

In his 606 phone ins, mainly last season, I found each topic of conversation inevitably detracted itself to Refereeing decisions, and Alan Green's inevitable ranting on sometimes minor in descresions that the officials had made, that sometimes had no bearing on the result of the game. People begin to call the show about footballing topics, and as the shows would progress it would slowly descend into a Alan Green bullying viewers into the acceptance of his views of officiating, with no regard for their opinion or topic that they wanted to bring up.

Saying that, I have very little negativity to saying regarding 5Live football coverage; just any negativity and anger is centered around this loudmouth, self-opinionated, sanctimonious, holier-than-thou, self-righteous, moralistic, intolerable man!
Report tobermory June 20, 2012 6:43 PM BST
Even managed to fall out with someone as mild as Graham Turnip...

from 2009.......

There has been yet another fall-out between 5 Live's maverick football commentator Alan Green and one of his colleagues - this time former England manager Graham Taylor.

The bust-up occurred during the Kazakhstan World Cup qualifier when Taylor, who has become a popular and respected member of the England media corps, was working alongside Green on the match coverage.

Green made an outlandish comment about wanting 'to shoot' those taking part in a Mexican wave in the stadium to which Taylor retorted, understandably: 'Sometimes you do say stupid things.' Afterwards Green admonished Taylor: 'Never, never call me stupid on air again.'

This provoked Taylor to tell Green - not before time - a few home truths about the way he treats fellow 5 Live team members. But having got that off his chest, Taylor offered a hand of friendship the following day, which was not accepted - sparking another Taylor managerial hairdryer in Green's direction.

Since then Taylor and his agent have had words with the 5 Live management about the former Watford and Aston Villa boss greatly enjoying his 5 Live work but just not needing the sort of confrontation he had had with Green, who last season refused to travel on the same plane as 5 Live presenter Mark Saggers - now working for talkSPORT.

Both Taylor and Green will be part of the 5 Live team at Wembley tonight for the World Cup qualifier against Croatia - but it's guaranteed any dialogue between them on air will be minimal.

Alan Green has a rant about mexican wave in the stadium during this tournament.
How appalling people who have paid to get in should try and enjoy themselves.
Report kenilworth June 20, 2012 8:47 PM BST
Green should concentrate on doing his job,
which I understand to be commentating on
football matches, and not on 'mexican waves'
not on 'how long it takes for the corporate guests
to return to their seats after half time' not
on the 'rear end of a lady who came across his
view of a particular match ' etc. I can't imagine
any of the summarizers enjoy working with him,
especially Chris Waddle.

Report DonNo1 June 21, 2012 12:19 PM BST
If you've ever watched a game on TV with him on the radio you'll realise just how bad he is.  A player will be cleaned out, he'll call it a dive.  A player will dive and he'll be calling for a yellow card.  He'll call a handball when it hits somebodies knee.  3 minutes into a game if there hasn't been a clear chance on goal he'll have classified it as **** game whatever happens in the next 87 (every game in the World Cup).
Not to mention his ramblings about stuff completely irrelevant to the game that nobody cares about.

He's terrible

Report rommel June 21, 2012 12:21 PM BST
meant to say is there no possiblity a lot of people are judging him by what other people have said?
Report berto77 June 21, 2012 12:24 PM BST
His basic problem on commentary is that he wants to be centre of attention therefore makes over the top criticism of something, anything, which often distracts from the match.

His bigger problem problem as a 606 host is that he barely lets a caller get a word in before spouting off with his own opinions.  And then repeats ad nauseum.

I just can't listen to the oaf these days.
Report DonNo1 June 21, 2012 12:26 PM BST
Is the reason BBC switch up commentators every 25 mins because nobody can stand Green but they don't feel they can give him the boot?
Report d13phe June 21, 2012 12:26 PM BST
it really irks me that i pay towards his wages

i dont understand why they have him

you just want someone to commentate on the game and have someone alongside who has played/managed football to give a little analysis

not some jumped up orrible unt giving his controversial beliefs on the Beeb
Report Regular Fries June 21, 2012 12:30 PM BST
I think the beeb see him as an institution.

I rarely listen to the commentary unless in the car but often hear him before matches when in the kitchen preparing my fois grois. Mike Ingham's not much better tbh, obviously spent too much time around Green.
Report berto77 June 21, 2012 12:31 PM BST
I've always wondered why the beeb need 2 commentators who swap halfway through the half.  Talksport commentary does okay with just one.  Anyone know why this is?
Report Regular Fries June 21, 2012 12:33 PM BST
It's either because they think 90 mins is too long to be constantly commentating, or it's becuase they think the listeners prefer to hear a change in voice.
Report berto77 June 21, 2012 12:37 PM BST

Alan Green gets carried away and is certainly opinionated but I like him. Far better than those so called interviewers without any opinions who who just suck up to the likes of SAF for fear getting banned if they tried asking an intelligent question.
Report squigs June 21, 2012 5:57 PM BST
I actually think he is ok as long as he is not commentating on either Liverpool or Manchester United.

Radio commentary is challenging and Green's description of the game is often actually really good which is tough to do when commentating on the radio.

Wouldn't bother me arse with 606 so I don't get to hear his inane rants on it. He is certainly biased alright though, I remember listening to Man United v Newcastle years back where Rooney scored his volley from 35 yards and Rooney and Green struggled to accept as 'a reasonable strike' but was too busy bemoaning the defenders heading a ball away.
Report high_lander June 21, 2012 6:00 PM BST
his rants are legendary - he had one the other day about torres that everyone in the studio ignored, tumbleweed for a few seconds, then the rest of them continued talking about the game.

the biggest problem i have with him is that he is not impartial, he allows his personal feelings and emotions to have free reign, instead of being professional.

I have no problem with people saying it how they see it. I like Boycott on the cricket for example. But Green often sees a load of old boll*cks and moans all the time. So I don't like his commentary.

Green led out a tirade of negativity (as you can imagine) to the way Greece set out, claiming that all they wanted was a 0-0; from what I remember it was mainly Green whome being slurring the Greek's approach to the game. Can imagine similar words from Mills, but have been impressed with on 5Live since he started - coming across quite insightful and knowledgeable.
