Doing what's needed. That is all that matters. 2 wins and a draw from that group is much more than I was hoping for.

Kudos to Roy imo.

Report Dylan1975 • June 19, 2012 9:45 PM BST
typical Roy Hodgson team they'll be well organised and hard to beat but they're very re-active and not pro-active so a lot depends on what the opposition does, if the opposition plays well i think England will struggle but if they don't they can nick results.
Report brngtwt • June 19, 2012 9:46 PM BST
The overall performance was , well, crap.
But all of a sudden we are getting away with little things, the defence looks composed.
Attack wise, must do better. 7/10.
When we play a decent side, maybe the best thing we could do is concede early and then the shackles can come off.
Wellbeck/Rooney/Young surely has some potential?

Final group games:  The world and European champions struggled, France lost, hitherto impressive Russians out, Dutch out, even the Germans were a debatable penalty from being in big trouble.

1-0 v the hosts is a decent recent.

England are cr*p. The Ukraine were the better side imo, bar the clown in goal for them.

Italy have some good forwards, I'd expect them to score and England to struggle badly.

Supposedly, The best thing about this England team is a tight, defensive setup. Yet the defence was shaky v the Swedes and tonight, relied on a dodgy decision and a player missing from 3 yards out. A team with some good attackers will knock England out imo.

I thought for the first 20 minutes England looked woeful.

Bar the keepers howler they didnt really look like scoring....

If Shevchenko was fit I think he'd have tucked one of their chances away.

Think pace is the key against Italy. Surely Walcott must get more game time.
Report the dza • June 19, 2012 10:02 PM BST
All this sh1te about Milner and A. Young doing defensive work -- well, if you have wingers who actually carry a threat, then the opposition full-back will spend more time going back towards his own goal rather than bombing forwards.

The way England set up is to invite teams on, whilst not looking particularly solid. I don't think it's a winning combination...

Report mexicano • June 19, 2012 10:09 PM BST
i'm amazed that anybody is surprised hodgson has always picked teams that "have shape", are difficult to beat , but are very uninspiring.

his aim is to grind the opposition into the dust defensively, hence milner and a mainly withdrawn ashley young, picked purely for defensive duties, it's quite easy to make the case that he plays four "holding" midfield players.

defend as if your life depended on it, and hope to get a break in their area.

but you know what???????????

it might just workLaugh
Report Pootle • June 19, 2012 10:10 PM BST

Report the dza • June 19, 2012 10:12 PM BST
We know what his aims are Mex, but I don't think England look all that soild defensively.

Italy have some sharper forwards, it'll be a much better indicator. I think Italy will be too good for England, but we shall see.
Report Dan Chipowski • June 19, 2012 10:13 PM BST
Very poor performance. Ukraine much the better side and unlucky not to be going through. If they had better attacking players England would have been taken apart in the first half.

Italy aren't much better though, and it'll be a cagey game. If England performed like tonight against the Germans they'd do well to keep it to a 2 goal defeat.
Report clarkey • June 19, 2012 10:16 PM BST

see once again tony you show how juvenile you are.

i call it how i see it, i don't make things up that people have said just to try and prove a spurious point.

please show me any post where i've said i'm quite happy with england playing like that.

the truth is i haven't, but you have to pretend i have in order to try and have a pop at me.

you see what you don't nunderstand is that england are my team, i had no choice in the matter i was born here. in exactly the same way that chelsea are my team. I HAVE TO SUPPORT THEM. i didn't cast my gaze far and wide to see who were the best, then pledge my lifelong allegiance to them because i "LIKED THE WAY THEY PLAY"

somebody once said football teams should be like your feet, gnarled smelly and horrible. you were born with them and that's the way it is.

unfortunatly too many people treat foofball teams like a pair of shoes, keep looking till you see something you like.

i'm definatly a feet man.

how about you?

Does anyone else feel this team has a sort of humility about it that no England team has had for a very long time?

It's as if they know they ain't the best team but they'll go down fighting and give it their all.A James Milner of a football team if you like. The wags of Svens era and the underlying frustration at Fabios era seems a long time ago.

Just a bunch of decent hard working players trying to win against teams of vastly superior technique through hard work and commitment.

Very similar to a decent championship team going on a decent FA cup run.

I agree with clarkey. Have been quietly impressed by the attitude, and think the fact that they know they are limited gives them a better chance than in previous tournaments - always used to give the impression that they weren't 100% committed because someone else would save them if a few individuals had a poor game.

I have been very quietly impressed with them. They have been poor technically, but as others have said there are at least two good teams not in the knockout stages, and Italy are very beatable. Much better that we have them than Spain.

A few have knocked us for conceding twice against Sweden but they put two (and could have had more) past a French side that was on a 24-match unbeaten streak. And while we were lucky with the non-goal, Rooney should have had us 1-0 up at the break. Joe Hart didn't actually have much to do.

It's not pretty but it was never going to be. Roy knows what he's doing and so far it has worked. You just never know. There are enough talented players in the side to beat any team in this tournament granted luck. It's unlikely but they have a squeak.
Report ArmchairIdiot • June 19, 2012 10:59 PM BST

Report JamDav1982 • June 19, 2012 11:00 PM BST
There is no chance that the players that France, Sweden and Ukraine have should be seen as 'technically superior to what England have.

All the English players play for the top English clubs in what many people tell us is the best league in the world.

They have been poor in all three games and got by on a good bit of luck so far.

With the players they have, they should look a lot stronger.

we give the ball away all the time because of the way the team is set up not technical inferiority to players from the Ukraine FFS!

We play with 2 banks of 4 in straight lines. You need triangles for a "technical" passing game.

England played Sweden,France & Ukraine...all three were better than England...luck will desert them soon i'm sure.

Thought a draw was fair enough v France, didn't think either side was massively superior.  Thought we deserved the win vs Sweden as we were the better team for most of the game.  Last night we weren't great but then neither were Ukraine.  Definitely didn't deserve to lose.  But all about opinions I suppose.

Group stages are all about getting through regardless of performance.  We have a good chance against Italy if we can keep hold of the ball better.  Would like to see Walcott play as I think he can do some damage with his pace and put them on the back foot.  If we allow them to dictate the game, Pirlo will kill us.

Cmon England.
