Rooney has not been outstanding for England since this tournament in 2004. But he has the potential and England must hope it comes through; in reality it is their (our) only hope.

Can't think of any aspect of his game that is world class except perhaps his work rate, which is usually borne out of frustration from having given it away in the first place.

Cant make my mind up about him - I've seen him put in some world class performances but not consistantly. Still hes only 26 o in his prime and given his international performances have been partially blighted by injury and cards/suspensions he has a chance to put it all right in the next couple of weeks. He is world class imo, he could get a game for any side. Put it this way, the top sides in the world would find a place for him if he was available for selection.

The front 4 would be incredibly fluid and their width is mainly from full-back. Rooney is ahead of Tevez imo.

Not one of the top 5 (attacking players, which most people only ever include) but if the rule is "best 22" he probably squeaks in, though more because of a lack of quality forwards at the moment. Neither Ronaldo or Messi are strikers, Villa's had a bad injury, Neymar is a definite yes. So then you've got Zlatan (flat track bully), RVP (1 good season [till March]), Falcao (could very well be up there if he reproduces his form for another year), Aguero (needs to do a bit more imo), Torres (if he can re-capture the old days for a full season), Cavani (not for me), Lavezzi (see Falcao), Gomez (no), Suarez (be a better finisher, stop being silly), Benzema (for me yes, he's the complete striker).

Aguero might be more skilful, but Benzema is a top class finisher from the old school - great movement, good pace, and always takes the right option. A truly great player.

We will know more after this competition. He has carried injuries or lack of fitness in many of England's top games during his career thus far. This is his chance to grip a competition and make it his. Nothing less will do if he is to be considered as a genuine world class forward.

Tbh rooney has not had a good run in a tournament with england, either injured, not made it 2008, 2010 was just an england shockkkkerrr and well this tournament banned until tuesday.

He gets goals against sunderland fulham and blackburn?, so the 114 goals in 8 premier league seasons with united is just against them? he has hit over double figures in all 8 seasons not to mention the trophys he has won while helping the reds. Call me bias but strikers with the stats he has at club level at least would make him a world class striker, but being rooney/english/playing for man united he has his critics and prob will always have them.

The term world class is far too overused in my opinion, very few players in the World I would consider to be 'world-class', by this I mean consistently a clear cut above their peers - therefore I'd consider the following to be world class under the those premises;
- Xavi
- C.Ronaldo
- Iniesta
- Messi
- Yaya Toure (90% sold on this)
- Xabi Alonso
- Sergio Ramos
- Thiago Alves (don't see much of AC Milan, but think he can be seen as WClass cb)
- Phillip Lahm

Whilst thinking about who I would really consider to be world class, I felt strange to put so many names from Barca and Real Madrid, but I think that's just the way it is; probably due to the quality of players around them in those teams makes it easier for them to achieve such high standards that would deem 'world class' tag - probably similar reasons why people would argue the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and Rooney don't perform for their country.

Below these sort of players I think you would find Wayne Rooney - a magnificent player - but just not world class. On his day, unplayable, but whilst still being a great player more often than not, nothing more. Don't want to detract anything from Rooney here, massive fan of him, and love watching him play. I'd consider him to be in similar echelons as certain players as RVP, Fabregas, Ozil, Ribery, David Silva.. Still a wonderful player, but not the same levels of Messi and Ronaldo though - therefore in risk of dumming down the term that 'world-class' represents, Rooney cannot be deemed world-class, which after all is the best, of the best, of the best.

In regard to England, and his performances when it has mattered, I'd argue that very few players have stood up and been counted in the big games, with Ashley Cole being the only player in my generation of watching England at big tournaments consistently performing - WC02, 06, EC04. This result of players, who have been deemed 'world-class' by media and fans alike, not turning up, has undoubtedly led to various disappointments and non-performances - arguing whether they should have been considered 'world-class' in the first place. Here I'm thinking Gerrard, Lampard (04-10), Rooney (06-10), David Beckham (02, 04).

Wayne Rooney, now has the best chance in England shirt to perform and show us the top of his game than ever, with the team around him settled, playing well indidually, in a confident, comfortable set-up. Rooney will play in his favored number 10 role, playing upfront, just behind the leading striker - a role that will have led to him being considered world class by many people over many years.

The point I'd really like to emphasis here; is that in previous teams where Rooney hasn't shone, you never as a fan, looking back had a real confidence in the teams capabilities and cohesion to succeed as a real team - with it seemingly 11 names on a team sheet, instead of a round pegs in round holes. Examples being the Gerrard/Lampard midfield two debate, Gerrard on the left, Heskey, Scholes on the left.

Only contradiction here would be when Rooney first came onto the scene, in 2004, who should, arguably his best form in an England shirt. I don't believe this to be truly relevant, as back then he was a much different type of player than what he is now. Back then he played without any regard to tactical responsibility, and was just told to play - and telling a fearless 17/18 year old that, with the ability Rooney ha(d/s), will result in him scoring hat-tricks on his Man U debut, scoring 4 in Euro 2004 - plus he was a bit of an unknown quantity to other teams, and most notably David Seaman!

Since then, he's been playing in poor teams made up of perceived star players - WC 2006, 2010, 2008, 2010 Qualifying. Now what you will see is a team, that will be fundamentally round pegs in round roles, and I think that is evident to most fans - but the main point now, is that Rooney will become the most important factor in the team, with him being allowed to link midfield and attack in the way Young has done playing upfront in previous games, which coupled with his ability and talent should see a rejuvenation Wayne Rooney in terms of England.

I can see your point, when i see you put ramos, lahm, yaya and alonso as world class and above rooney i was like???? As i would class rooney as a better player than them, but for thier position and thier job for their team then it is justified for their position.

Enlgand have let the fans down and down, tactics, managers, players, supported them all the way but had no real confidence. Same this year aswell will support them not confidant of them winning the euros but they have a chance just like any team so we will see what happens. I hope rooney can give his man united form to england as if he is on form england can push on with him and get better.

A mate of mine is a so called man united fan, he said if someone offered 50 million for rooney he would take it, i have watched many games, it is not just his scoring and skills and intelligence, he will run back and help out and is like an extra player. Tuesday we will see i will either have to eat my words or be proven right. Go on wazaa step up for england and make it count!

Didn't see this initially, interesting post. I was thinking when making my first post how effective he'd be in a Barca or Real team, and if he'd drastically improve as a player, or their styles would bring the best out of him. I'd lean to him suiting Barca more, with the interchanging of forwards and the dropping deep of the front three.

Still not sold personally on whether either of those two line ups would work, or would be fielded (under Pep). Can see how it'd work, like I said, with Barca playing without an out and out focal striker, so that'd suit how Rooney plays; although I'd consider Sanchez, Villa and Pedro to be different types of forwards than Rooney.

Something I always see Rooney doing towards end of his career, would drop further back into midfield, as he played earlier last season, sort of what Scholes is doing now, but a bit more energetic.
