Every tournement a big time charlie who thinks they are bigger than the team mess it up and  we come home.No coincedence they usually play for man utd.Why start Rooney when Wellbeck and Carroll both scored and played well. Its Rooneys fault he was banned for two games and until he is needed he should start on the bench.

I wouldn't start him,he doesn't exactly walk into the team after the needless red card and yesterdays starters deserve another go.Effort and reward engenders team spirit and Woy is experienced enough to know he can keep Rooney hungry and not disappoint the others. Carroll with service will terrorize the Ukraine.
Report jjmafmac June 16, 2012 10:01 AM BST
rooney will play and must play. he will bring a lift to the all team. a vital link between midfield and attack. he and welbeck already have a understanding upfront, he would start in every other nation in the tourament so he going to start in ours. tell me a team he wouldnt start.
Report KennyPowers June 16, 2012 10:05 AM BST
Holland and Spain if Villa was fit.
Report ph. June 16, 2012 10:08 AM BST
Germany,Holland will do for 2. Being one eyed isn't clever. Him and Benzema seem very similar also. Not sure he has ever imposed himself internationally and terrorised defences. He has had decent games but nothing outstanding for mine. I think Gomez struggles to walk in a straight line but he knows how to score.

its like telling ukraine to play schevchenko on the bench

get out of here
Report jjmafmac June 16, 2012 10:13 AM BST
trust me if was playing alonside quality team mates like spain holland and germany and france he would play ahead of fabreegas , riberry ,robbenn, podolski. trust me.
Report ph. June 16, 2012 10:13 AM BST
I can't see how you cant understand the message being sent if he strolls out to play. His sending off need punishing by the management for his unprofessionalism and others have done ok. To keep him on the bench will say more to him personally than any previous red card.
Report jjmafmac June 16, 2012 10:17 AM BST
hes not strolling out to play hes missed the 2 games he would have been gutted for last 10 months. he loves the game and he loves playing.
Report marychain1 June 16, 2012 10:23 AM BST
I'd start with him on the bench and go with the same XI, bringing him and Walcott on after an hour against tiring Ukraine legs, catch them out as they push forward for the win.
Report onemanarmy June 16, 2012 10:23 AM BST

so your best team dosen,t include Rooney then ,interesting ,so last night England played that well to even consider leaving out a player like him , after being one up at half time the cracks reappeared again quickly falling behind and looking very suspect at the back and could of gone further behind ,we came back and arguably got a win we probably didn,t deserve. if that game had finished 2-2 would we still want to start the same 11.
Report cooperman June 16, 2012 12:17 PM BST
It's the defence that worries me, as I can't recall the last time an England team were as woeful at marking opposition at set pieces.Roy will find a way to sort this out though.

England are a better team with Wellbeck in it than Rooney?

Right.
Report u want some June 16, 2012 12:21 PM BST
at the end of the day, facts are facts and we have a better win ratio without fatboy in. I definitely wouldn't play him, i wouldn't of even took him. The media and the other fooking idiots on TV are making out like he's Mr England. He doesn't deserve to be in the team full stop. He certainly can't play up front on his own as he has no pace and his movement doesn't rank him being the focal point
Report Corky June 16, 2012 12:29 PM BST
uwant some 100% correct.
Report maggot June 16, 2012 12:34 PM BST
" I wouldn't of even took him" ???  Great stuff.Laugh

Rooney is England's best player. He plays regularly with Danny Welbeck. He would also walk into any Dutch or German side without breaking sweat.

Andy Carroll will not start.
Report u want some June 16, 2012 12:36 PM BST
Who gives a fook if he would walk into the Dutch or German side, were England. His foolish antics should prevent him from playing, he's an idiot yet everyone is making out like he's some saviour.
Report maggot June 16, 2012 12:41 PM BST
Who's making out he's a saviour ?

He's our best player, and must play.

Do we really need a saviour, at this point of the tourney ?

My Germany, Holland, remark was in response to ph. thinking that he would not make their teams.
Report u want some June 16, 2012 12:42 PM BST
Who would you swap in the German and Holland team for Rooney
Report maggot June 16, 2012 12:47 PM BST
He's a better player than Affelay, Sneijder, Podolski, IMO.
Report u want some June 16, 2012 12:48 PM BST
So you'd play him rightwing/centre mid/left wing?
Report maggot June 16, 2012 12:52 PM BST

Report u want some June 16, 2012 12:53 PM BST

Report dsmith June 16, 2012 12:55 PM BST

Report paradox and equilibrium June 16, 2012 1:00 PM BST
Rooney as a lone striker is useless. This much has been proven. As long as Roy doesn't play him like that, then he should be in.
Report bananaoasis June 16, 2012 1:13 PM BST
Rooney obviously going to start in behind Wellbeck... FACT
Report Diavolo0 June 16, 2012 1:27 PM BST
Woy should book him on the first Easyjet flight out of there. Cant stand the bloke, putting aside the red card, people should remember his behaviour in south africa. How many chances does the prima doonna want?
Report u want some June 16, 2012 1:28 PM BST

Report EdwardWoowardWould June 16, 2012 1:30 PM BST
It was the same when Ireland and that tool ROY KEANE split in Japan

Ireland were miles better without him and could have beaten Spain after getting thru their group

No way in Hell Rooney should start as he has stunk the place out for England and been sent off TWICE

If he plays the only way i would let him is in playing off both Welbeck and Carroll but for me HE SHOULD NOT PLAY
Report mafeking June 16, 2012 1:31 PM BST
hasn't scored in a finals tourney since 2004. ain't exactly been missed much
Report differentdrum June 16, 2012 1:33 PM BST
I would agree that Rooney should not get an automatic starting place.

The team have got themselves into a position to qualify without him and both strikers scored in the last match.

The team have achieved their results based on very disciplined performances. Rooney is the least disciplined member of the squad and more than likely will think he can decide to play where he wants to.

As stated above he can't play on his own up front as he lacks the pace to run in behind and he isn't brave/good enough in the air. It seems likely that Welbeck will be sacrificed.

We all know Rooney will play because he has unfortunately become bigger than the team and the manager knows the knives will be sharpened if he leaves him out. Unfortunately, he will now have the added problem of explaining that it does not look very good if one player thinks they are above singing the anthem.

Why does having a different opinion to YOU make it wrong or being a moppet.

If you can bring back any great game Rooney has played since 2004 I will be happy to sing MANAMANA DO DO DO DO DO MANAMANA

Rooney has shown NOTHING for England in ages and can only hurt the balance and harmony as he sulks / gets surly and often comes too deep if he aint getting the ball

Up to Hodgson to play him so the thread should be will Hodgson blow it playing Rooney? It's not cut and dry. I think Rooney being out has helped us. The pressure has been off and we've played decent disciplined football.

In fairness I think Rooney probably should start, but its a close run thing and we should trust Hodgsons judgement if he decides not to.

Report Whippin Piccadilly June 16, 2012 2:25 PM BST
Why should Rooney walk straight back into the team? He unbalances the team IMO as he expects the whole team to revolve around him. You have to be disciplined and wait for your chances in international football. Rooney still doesn't get this and goes running round like a headless chicken if hasn't touched the ball in all of 2 minutes. Also his performances in the world cup were the worst I've ever seen by ANY player in an England shirt!
Report u want some June 16, 2012 2:35 PM BST
agreed, he was fooking dreadful in the world cup. As he normally is in an England shirt and for Hodgson to come out after last nights win when both strikers scored, to say Rooney is definitely starting is fooking stupid
