A recent International  match between Ireland and Spain, Ireland  were awarded a penalty and the captain summoned his best player and said, 'I want you to take this one Duff. Just think hard as you kick -think which way the wind is blowing, and think which direction the keeper's going to jump.'

'Holy Mother!' said Duff. 'Do you expect me to think and kick at the same time?'

Tokenism is the perfect word for it. It's time to abandon all in qualifying in Europe. We need to follow the lead of other federations and tier the qualification system. Sorry, but what do San Marino learn by losing 8-0, 9-0, 5-0, 6-0, 8-1. They might improve if Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein had their own pre-qualifying.

I agree, Darlo. But even saying that, their respective federations are soo, so far behind in terms of Football development that there is really no hope for them. Sad to say, but thier existance is totally pointless, in terms of them being 'competition' for bigger nations. Would rather see them enter in thier own qualifying for a lesser FIFA nations World Cup.

Report t.richards June 14, 2012 9:38 PM BST
With 16 teams like it is now, you are weening out the North Korea's, Togo's, New Zealand's that you see at the WC; and whilst is nice to see them their, and we can all share a collective 'ahh, well done' and give them a patronising pat on the back, but I'd rather see the Euro's stay as a the premium International tournament.
Report Darlo Bantam June 14, 2012 9:39 PM BST

Report smemon87 June 14, 2012 9:40 PM BST
Really disappointing from Ireland, i expect Spain to dominate but i expected Ireland to show a bit of fight... there was none at all out there and it was quite frankly embarrassing watching them. They've let the country and the fans down.
Report t.richards June 14, 2012 9:41 PM BST
Would be a similar principle to say that from next season the PL becomes 24 teams. Now there are an added 4 teams that are now regonized to have the quality to play in the top division, when previously they weren't deemed good enough - and that is without any further development in terms of quality for those 4 teams. Which to me smacks of Tokenism.

Report Ghostdog June 14, 2012 9:44 PM BST
Roy Keane fuming.
Report t.richards June 14, 2012 9:45 PM BST
I think I would be. Roy Keane was a winner as a player, and to see players so below the quality he was and played with, can't be nice. I think in 2002 he held the side in contempt, and the issues surrounding the training he was promised, was the straw that broke the camels back with him and McCarthey.
Report SlippyBlue June 14, 2012 9:46 PM BST

Did he get sent home from a tournament ?
Report t.richards June 14, 2012 9:48 PM BST
Was clear to see that it would take a performance beyond belief for Ireland to hold their own against a Spanish side in tournament football. Think Roy Keane was one of the few people in the ITV and even BBC footballing contingent to realise this, and not get too caught up in the 'Irish spirit' and exploits of 94 WC and years gone by that was getting crammed down out throats.
Report Darlo Bantam June 14, 2012 9:48 PM BST
He sent himself home. As TR alluded to above.
Report Ghostdog June 14, 2012 9:49 PM BST
Roy pitching for the job there? Slate the team, only so much a manager can do, but great fans...
Report t.richards June 14, 2012 9:49 PM BST
From what I remember, (was 9/10 at the time) and what learned after, he was promised top quality training and camp facilities for the team from the Irish FA, and was let down. He was coming back from a big injury, and really didn't need such shoddy conditions.
Report Darlo Bantam June 14, 2012 9:51 PM BST
I actually spoke to Niall Quinn about the facilities last year. He said of all the tournaments he went to, they were by far and away the best. I suspect Roy's departure was as much to do with the fact he hated Mick McCarthy.
Report Ghostdog June 14, 2012 9:51 PM BST
That's what he says in his book. Training was shambolic and they were all on a jolly.

Only know his side, I'm sure there are other opinions.
Report dbrfcno1 June 14, 2012 9:52 PM BST
Ok cheers thought he got sent home. I like his honest style need more like that on the tv.
Report Darlo Bantam June 14, 2012 9:52 PM BST
Keane is one thing. A winner. And his attitude tonight shows that. Ireland have to stop thinking they are there for a jolly or they won't ever achieve anything. If anything, they're just proving that 24 teams is far too many at this tournament.
Report Ghostdog June 14, 2012 9:52 PM BST
There you go, another opinion. As far as I remember, it wasn't denied that he layed into McCarthy and was ready to fight.
Report t.richards June 14, 2012 9:53 PM BST
I can never see Roy Keane becoming a top manager, just doesn't seem to have the patience and decorum that would be needed.

Can imagine at his team at Ipswich him expecting things from the players that would be expected of him and his players when at Man U. With lose players not sharing that 'winning' attitude that led Keane to the top of his proffesion.
Report Darlo Bantam June 14, 2012 9:55 PM BST
I think Keane's problem is he wouldn't be able to manage players who just aren't good enough. Keane has to manage at the top or not at all, in my opinion.
Report dbrfcno1 June 14, 2012 9:56 PM BST
Am sure if you had an off game under him you would certainly know about it.
Report Darlo Bantam June 14, 2012 9:56 PM BST
And for Keane's honest and forthright opinions, you get the patronising Chiles who just doesn't get it.
Report t.richards June 14, 2012 9:57 PM BST
I agree. Doesn't seem to have the necessary personal skills you would need to win players onto your side, from which you can then implement winning attitude, idiolgies and training ect.

Just such a paradox between Chiles and Keane. You can tell that he holds Chiles in total contemp, must think he's such a child.
Report t.richards June 14, 2012 9:58 PM BST
