Hart: 7 - Generally solid under crosses and coped with most long range efforts. Was unlucky to be unsighted for the goal.

Johnson: 8 - Defended well against some tricky opponents, covering for the centre halfs at times. Gave us an outlet down the right also.

Cole: 7 - Solid enough. Was beaten once or twice but generally did his job.

Terry: 7 - Again solid. Never looked overly troubled when the ball was put into the box.

Lescott: 8 - Unstoppable header for his goal. Never looked overly troubled by the French forwards.

Parker: 7 - Some cracking blocks as is normal for him. Calm in possession and kept it simple.

Gerrard: 7 - Played a little within himself but did fine. Some nice cross-field balls and a great delivery for the goal.

Oxlade-Chamberlain: 7 - Showed glimpses of his pace and raw ability but naive in possession at times.

Milner: 6 - Didn't offer the side a great deal. Improved in the second half but delivery was erratic at times.

Wellbeck: 7 - Worked very hard running the channels and held the ball up well.

Young: 6 - Thought he needed to get more involved at times. Needed to drop deep to collect the ball a lot more.

Subs: No real impact by any of them. Though Defoe should have got his shot off once or twice - never usually an issue with him.

Overall a reasonable start. Looked promising until we scored but then seemed to revert back to defending far too deep, which resulted in the equalizer. Pleasantly surprised (thought we'd ship a few goals) but with plenty of room for improvement.

The difference between my ratings and yours Dawsy is that I'm neutral - don't support a Prem team. That, and the fact that I actually know what I'm talking about! Cool

Gerrard was terrible.
Report donny osmond June 11, 2012 7:45 PM BST
welbecks control, at times was awful, you'd think we had played a quality team, which on the night they were not

it was a poor game, i would mark them lower than the op

johnson can keep his 8, most of the others 1 down

I'd knock a point of all of them - too generous that - should average out at about 6 (good - touch above average) otherwise OK

The thing is, when you have two buses in a 20 yard area it is easy to say "he didn't do much wrong, give him a 7".
Report Return_Of_Dawsy June 12, 2012 12:20 PM BST
They rated Gerrard as our best player?

WTF!

Diarra 6? I also thought he had a good game

I'm surprised l'equipe didn't give those 2 better marks

i'm with you premier, they were my 2 best players from each side
Report d13phe June 12, 2012 12:45 PM BST
I agree with Glossys ratings really.

I would give Welbeck an 8 for the workrate he showed and quality on the ball.

Gerrard looked a little gassed to me as can be expected but he is definately an x factor player and its great to see him as the play maker without Lampard getting in the way
Report brentford June 12, 2012 12:49 PM BST
Hart 6
Generally did pretty well but a keeper of his calibre can be a difference maker and would have expected him to make the key save from Nasri.

Johnson 7

Very solid defensively and capable of offering something going forward.

Cole 7

Another well discplined defensive effort.

Terry 7

Made transition to right side of central defence without any issues.

Lescott 7

Attacked the ball well for the goal and looked better defensively than might have been anticipated.

Parker 7

Tireless effort and played his role very well.

Gerrard 7

Will need to be a bigger impact in following matches but tailored performance to opposition and did pretty well.

Milner 6

Works hard and disciplined as always - chance on left foot wasn't as easy as some suggested but offers limited attacking quality.

Oxlade Chamberlain 5

Seemed to get some fairly rave reviews for an ordinairy performance but showed glimpses of his ability on the ball and as you could say for the whole side put in a decent shift when France had the ball.

Young 6

Had some good moments and is the closest to a flair player in that XI but opportunities limited and surprised he wasn't asked to drop deeper at times.

Welbeck 6

Soome decent touches to link the play which is often a weak spot in his game but again thought the media talked up a moderate 90 min performance.

Subs

Walcott 5 - no time to make impression
Henderson 6 -  did ok in limited time
Defoe 6 - offers some good movement but limited effect in what was largely a damage limitation Eng performance.

Conclusion -

Job done on the day but will need to change gears rapidly if the Swedes and Ukrainians are to be brushed aside.
Current side is far more capable of digging out tough draws than dominating the perceived lesser sides I suspect.

anyone got opta stats for wellbeck ?
Report Stringer June 12, 2012 12:53 PM BST
Shrewd by Roy, Lescott much better than Ferdinand these days
Report d13phe June 12, 2012 12:54 PM BST
i definitely think milner was the right choice last night to track back with Evra but I wonder if someone more attack minded will get the nod against the Swedish on Friday who looked pretty vulnerable at the back.

Report Tony Broke June 12, 2012 1:32 PM BST
why bother with such ratings for such a mediocre side?
the only player to play well was lescott, france werent much better but at least had the majority of the possession, what england tried to do, any competent side can do namely, try to block the other team from creating too many scoring chances whilst not creating any themselves, ask greece when they won the thing, italy, poland, even spain .
i doubt england will manage to beat swedes based on the 2 side's performances, because sweden will need to win now and they to me look far more dangerous than england do going forward, england look to me like they are going to struggle to score more than 1 in their remaining games.
