Expats will be barred from playing poker with fellow English-speakers internationally, while those who enjoy virtual bingo are likely to be frustrated in Spain. From June 1, only companies with a Spanish government-issued licence and an .es domain will be allowed to run online gambling sites in the country. The previous Socialist Party government passed a new gambling law last year that introduced the new rules, but the implementation of this was delayed when they lost power to the Popular Party in November. The new law doesn’t, however, cover bingo, meaning those who’ve taken to substituting the UK’s bingo halls for a bit of a flutter online will be out of luck. It has not been banned but the legal assumption is that if it isn't on the list of regulated products, it isn't legal. While sports betting is permitted under the new law, live in-play betting has been excluded and there has been speculation that the regulation of betting exchanges — such as that run by Betfair — will be delayed. |

Viva - it goes on to say "Betfair's Exchange will be made unavailable to Spanish customers, who will be transferred to the new sportsbook until exchange licenses are issued" so i got the impression that the spaniards were only being directed to the sportsbook until a new license was issued?

that's betfair's report of an assurance from the spanish regulator, and has no concrete timescale.
so it comes under the category of "believe it when i see it." this whole retrospective tax-grab thing has been a pretty demeaning exercise on the part of spain imo. self-respect at an all time low. |

Spain need the money that betfair will pay in tax and betfair want to be available in Spain. Don't see why they can't just sort it out.

Also love how you can still gamble on the casino, poker etc which are probably the easiest ways to lose money quickly yet you can't have a bet on Real Madrid.

depending how that works out, BF may not be massively motivated to hand over another big wedge to get the exchange back up and running. |

Thank you for your e-mail. As of June 8th, Betfair became a regulated Spanish operator and therefore only regulated betting and gaming products are allowed for Spanish residents. At this time, our exchange will not be one of them. A license application was submitted in Feb 2012 and we are awaiting information on a new license date. As a requirement for this regulatory change www.betfair.com is no longer available for customers in Spain. Customers located in Spain trying to access www.betfair.com will be redirected to a new site www.betfair.es. Existing customers will be automatically migrated to a duplicate account on www.betfair.es and will be able to keep their account log in credentials. They will however need to provide extra verification details to satisfy the regulators above and beyond our current KYC requirements. They will be asked for these when accessing www.betfair.es for the first time and each time after that until the details have been provided. International customers that travel to Spain will not be able to use either .com or .es after June 8th unless they have a Spanish National ID and can satisfy the regulators verification requirements.
