lads i need help,i want to quit gambling but am finding it so difficult to stop,

i seem to gamble just for the sake of it,

most of the time i dont even know anything about the sport im betting on,

its crazy but i just cant stop myself,

i tried quitting loads of times before but each time i stop i build up a bit of money and think maybe i'll go on holidays or buy something nice,

then i get the urge to go to the bookies and before long im broke again,

i know this may not be the best place for this thread but i know there are others that feel the same,

i spend most of my spare time betting and losing my hard earned money and i virtually ignore my family and my home,

i wish i could just flick a switch and turn off the craving,

im expecting a lot of smartarse comments but also some genuine one's,

so lads if anyone else here feels the same or has any advice please contribute,

thanks for reading

best of luck to you , my advice change the way you think.... i dont go to banks after they charged me loads so i think of them as money grabbing so an so's... bookies are a hole different devil, go to G.A, book some activites with the family and friends...even if its just a cuppa and a chat(dont go into gambling) your in a habbit and you will break it, you dont need to gamble.. what you need is to spend time with the loved ones..

If you can conquer Mike Tyson you can conquer gambling addiction.

Get out while you can as it will lead to a sorry ending. Addicts will literally lose everything they have to their name eventually. Exclude yourself and try and find something else to pass your time, take up a sport, join a team etc

GA might not be everyones cup of tea.

Again tho it is an addiction and you need to fight it.

personally i think online sites have started a lot more ppl off as addicts, ive been online,3 years now and spent a lot of time and money but the past is the past, only been on the internet 6 years and in all honesty i think the nets pretty boring these days , the betting sites are one of the few things i bother with now, as well as news and one or two other things, as for the problem buster you have of gambling all the time i think a change of thought process is the way, its probably no different than being a pisshead or addicted to drugs , porn etc , there must be a time when the novelty goes,it just a case of when.
Report sofaking May 21, 2012 11:33 PM BST
Hope you can quit.  Good luck. Cool
Report busterdouglas May 21, 2012 11:35 PM BST
thanks for the positive advice guys,it been theripudic just writing about this problem,

i dont feel like harming myself or anything of the like,im just in a rut and finding it impossible to get out of,

i have closed all internet accounts and credit cards buts its so easy to walk into a betting shop when there's so many of them and they're also open late in the summer months,

you cant turn on the tv without hearing something about sport,it's become so big,

thinking about this betting lark i remember my very first bet,i was asked by my local shopkeeper to put a bet on for him in the grand national and gave me an extra 20p he told me to put 10p e.w for myself on rhyme and reason and bloody thing only went and won and here was me with 1 pound odd to my name at 10 years of age delighted with life,

buster - take up cycling. Get yourself a decent road bike and set yourself a decent challenge like completing a sportive or even  doing The Etape du Tour in 2013.

You will spend about £500-1000 on initial start up costs and once you get seriously into it you will find that your cash and time is taken up by cycling rather than gambling. This will occupy your time and your wallet and keep the gambling at bay.

how much you lost overall mate?
Report mikenz May 21, 2012 11:46 PM BST
you must still be on betfair?

i closed my ladbrokes and my centrebet account, actually banned for life there because instant games with sports account were bad news, only on 365, here and new zealand tab where i only have the odd bet anyway, what i find the biggest letdown is the time spent to produce a nil result, i have tried aye to win but just not as easy as i thought, some are lucky most are not.

Buster, you've closed down yr accounts and accepted that you shdn't try getting back what you've lost. That's a good start. Now you have to keep y/s out of the way of temptation.

You know where the bookies are and I wd make a conscious effort not to go past them.

Imv it's difficult to go cold turkey on anything entirely. Perhaps you need another highly structured activity that keep you mentally occupied but won't eat into your money, time and self-respect in the same way as gambling did. Perhaps this could be something w/ yr family? Is there something you can w/ yr kids, if you have any?

It's exhausting to invest everything in quitting, then fall off the wagon. Look at things in the longest poss. perspective--it's unlikely you've lost much of the wealth you will accumulate over yr life or that much of yr time with yr family. You are winning if you limit yr losses now.

And if you can't give up altogether, you can still fins a way of managing yr addiction. Commit to a trivial bank (something like 100 pounds and bet tiny fractions--like a quid--of that a go in a highly structured, thoroughly pre-planned way).

its tough alright, betweem all the advertising and all people talk about these days in pubs and at work is odds.

Just dont look at any odds, coupons , text, oddschecker etc and when someone starts talking horses or betting just change the subject.

We all know its a mugs game deep down and its hard to walk away from it.

What p i s s e s me off most is that this site and all the rest is that they are throwing roulette and blackjack up in peoples faces as poker has decreased in popularity. These games will draw in people who normally dont bet on these and it all ends in tears. Shame on them.

then there' ignorant people like southcoast villain making £400 a day football trading. sickening and vulgar!
Report busterdouglas May 22, 2012 12:18 AM BST
@askari-appreciate the advice

@ernie-i read a book about how gambling was banned in the uk in the 1800's because it was ruining society and it was less than 20 years ago the lottery was reinstated which seemed to coincide with a boom for legalised gambling,
they banned cigarette sponsership at sporting events only to replace them with bookmakers sponsership
betting is banned in other countries for a reason
Report JC1326 May 22, 2012 12:19 AM BST
Get yourself on to the Gamcare site, buddy. You can chat online with a counselor, and they'll be able to better advise you than anybody on here.

My brother is a recovering addict. Resulted in nearly ending his life, so it can get really bad if you don't try to fight it.

Can't speak for everyone but I didn't condemn him when he told me, I just wanted to support him and see him get better. Hopefully your people will be the same.

All the best.

what betting styles do you guys have?
Report screw_u May 22, 2012 1:13 AM BST
its a sad situation but you can break the habit, like everyone says its just a matter of time. but at the same time you one can enjoy betting by sticking to one sports, especially football. try to treat it like a stock market of different value, you can hedge your risk my going for two outcomes rather than one.

but the suggestion people have given here are spot on, which is occupying yourself. i used to gamble a lot, but now i used another habit of having sex with my girl every day to break the habit of punting. also try to trick your mind by using the term punting instead of gambling. the reason i say this is because your mind is powerful and you will be surprised how changes can come, the word gambling carry's so much gravity. anyway i will go into that another, all the same good luck
